      unplug it and put 10 miles on it and see what happens. it might clear up if the rings are seated. if not, ride it hard for another 10 miles and see if the rings reseat. if that doesn't do it than its time for a topend job.

    Here's a serious offer Tatro! I didn't know you were in SD. I live in Idaho but I'm a 4th generation SD Native. I love riding and wrenching on old iron and plan on coming back to San Diego for the cold winter months. If you could use a good. AND CHEAP part time helper at your shop I would like to apply. I am pretty good with a wrench, will do any shop chores or tasks, machining, clean up, counter help, organize and inventory parts. I don't care as long as I can learn some along the way. I have done hundreds of top ends, carbs, brakes, and resurrected some pretty far gone old Harleys, but there is still a lot to learn. I would like to learn to build motors, from the bottom up etc. and can't think of a better way to learn or really anyone better to learn from. I am disabled with a bad back but can keep a fairly reasonable pace and have my own insurance. I will be looking for something to keep me busy this winter and If you like I will come to work for you. from November 1st 2020, thru May 1, 2020. I can work around 20 hours a week, and I will work for $8 bucks an hour, I figure that's a steal for what I could learn, additionally, if you will give me some training and allow me to "tag along" and help from time to time when you are building motors. I would do that on my own time just for the schooling. There aren't too many mechanics that know these machines like you do, maybe you could use the help? Anyway, I will come and introduce myself when I get to town, if nothing else I am sure I will need parts for one of my bikes. Thanks for the great videos, my 84 will be fixed today cause of this one !

    Hello, I am rebuilding a 72 and wondering about your comment , one year only pos. Can you tell me more about the 72 pump? Thanks

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  Рік тому +1

      yes, its the last year of that design. 1968-72. the next design is 1973-74 and then 1975-80. the 1981-91 is called the evo pump and the late evo pump is the 1992-99.
      the 1968-72 pumps basically had one oil hole feeding the complete motor so the crank takes all the oil and leaves very little for the topend. in 1973 harley changed things by splitting the flow between the top and bottom ends. the bottom end now has a pressure check valve added between the top and lower end. once the oil pressure is built up feeding the topend, the check valve opens up and feeds the lowerend. after that the extra oil is blown out another hole into the cam chest. in 1975 harley changed some stuff in the oil pump body and change the drive gears to turn the oil pump faster. this is what makes the big difference in oil pump flow and pressure.
      s&s has good instructions on how to change some of the oil holes in the motor case when you install the later 1981-91 evo style oil pump on your motor.

      have you riden the bike yet? until you run the motor long enough to equalise the system it will keep dripping. you can take the breather line off and clean all the crap out of it too. its going to drip until it cleans itself out.
      you said you just changed the oil so that is what i am going off of. if you over heated the mnotor the rings will stop working and have lots of blowby. this will cause lots of oil leaking out the breather and other places. you can check for this by doing a leak down test on your motor. the leak down testing tools don't cost that much anymore.

    I have a sifton 12-9969 oil pump on a 56 pan. Was put on 20 years ago by a good shop (reminds me of your brilliantly sarcastic ass!) and has been a champ always, no issues. The bike went down a decade ago (thank you life, may I have another) and I’ve finally brought it up. As of now my only remaining issue is the chain oiler screw in the pump, as in, I don’t have one. As you know, without it or it misadjusted it’ll drain your oil tank toot sweet and toast your motor.
    I ordered one mail order, it’s too fat for the pump. God forbid there be standardization... anyway, do you know if this sifton model is generic enough in its use of this needle screw, or is it entirely sifton/model specific? I’m tempted to take a plain Allen headed screw to the belt sander and cone the end, but I’d much rather have guidance from one of the last remaining actually knowledgeable people left on the planet.
