I am thoroughly enjoying these and thereby grateful you are doing this trail. Today everything seemed so green. Rocky Creek is pretty. OH! So cold at night ❄ Hoping the N°. 5 'swim' doesn't give either of you chills. 😊
An old friend of mine, just up the road from there (Papunya), used to tell me about how much he hated winter nights in the desert as a kid before he first saw white fellas. He was among the Last of the mob to live traditionally before first contact and would always go on about how they would huddle together basically naked with small fires around them. Some had it very tough before contact and after. Some had it easier before and after.
I haven't been to Ellery South but I have had friends who have been to both (including one who swam across the big hole) and we spoke to people on trail and I think the general consensus is the Ellery North. North has hikers only no tourists just a different vibe/quieter. The creek bed is a beautiful place to camp. The walk from Serpentine Gorge to Ellery North is incredibly beautiful. From what I have heard the track to the south is a lot of boulder hopping and unremarkable . It was worth carrying the extra day food - even with inconvenient location of Serpentine gorge food drop from the campsite!

Ice on the tent in the middle of the Australian Outback 🤣

wow - that is really interesting, you don't really hear this perspective often.
Do you think Ellery Creek North or South is the better option??
