  • While there are ratings for watts per channel for amplifiers, there's also headroom to consider. Chief Product Officer Andrew Welker explains what headroom means, when your system experiences it, all in simple terms.
    "What Is Headroom?" is the next video in our "From The Axiom Audio Glossary: Audio Terms Explained" playlist. As always looking forward to your comments and questions, they guide us to the next video topics you want to see covered.

    At first I thought that in guitar amps, the more wattage or power the amp has, the more powerful it is but I found out that higher wattage guitar amps mean they have more headroom. Thanks for taking the time to explain this.

    this is such an underrated Video. it should have more views and way more likes than what it currently has. this is all facts when it comes to car audio speakers and Amplifiers as well. the only difference in the car audio world is that the amps require Good Stable Electrical power from the vehicle's charging system in order for the amplifers to produce power output for your speakers. but overall very well said.

      Glad you found this helpful, let me know if there are any other terms you’d like defined.

    I agree absolutely about equal power or a little bit more, for the amplifier compared to the loudspeaker.
    Once I had an Exposure XV 60 Watt integrated amplifier, but later had to «downgrade» to a Cayin 252B with 200Watt.
    Quality of sound, like details, was great(and better) with Exposure, but dynamic was so much better with Cayin on the same speakers!
    It was at that time I discovered how to «wake up» my speakers, most speakers really play more dynamic with a powerful amplifier, even at low listening levels.
    Most quality speakers can handle a lot of power for a short time, it is low power amplifiers that will destroy them!

    If rms is measured at the clipping point and headroom is louder still, could we define headroom as the range from rms to max?

    • @AxiomHomeTheaters
      @AxiomHomeTheaters  2 роки тому

      There are many ways that you could define it, but it’s difficult because you need to include time in the measurement.

    • @Alkatross
      @Alkatross 2 роки тому

      @@AxiomHomeTheaters max power already addresses time since rms is meant for continuous output.

    • @AxiomHomeTheaters
      @AxiomHomeTheaters  2 роки тому

      @@Alkatross Correct…what I was getting at is that manufacturers would need to agree on some standard as to what length of time is representative of a max power rating.

    Hi Andrew,
    A question on active HPF on my Crown XLS 1502 amp which I'm thinking of using a pair in bridge mode at 1050wpc at 8ohm, 1550wpc at 4ohm to power my Focal Aria 926's.
    My speakers go down to 45Hz should I cut lower or give them full frequency and let the speakers passive crossover do the work?
    Music only system average Listening level is about 85dba. Thanks

    The headroom of amplifiers or speakers is almost unknown to the customer because it does not clearly define in the specifications. Even if it is included, I think it is rather difficult for the general customer to verify it.
    Also, it is not perceivable as it is seldom known for its unit. The most intuitive description may be in terms of the percentage of maximum watts.
    It is a complicated and difficult topic as not all customers tend to turn her amplifier to the maximum to test them. I think it is more of a matter of the designers who want to maintain a low distortion at the peak output level. And then making it the selling point.
    Please point out if I have misunderstood anything.

      You are absolutely correct, and it becomes even more difficult as you will not truly know the system headroom without the context of the speakers you are trying to drive.

    I came from car audio and many of these bassheads think that since a amplifier can do 1000 watt @4 ohm 1%thd that it's great.. I can not express enough how that is terrible
