It is not like this extreme. But we bypass polite formulas, those little things that are a sweet nothing, and come straight to the point. And when we say "I like it", or also "I don't" then we mean it, not say something like: "There are other solutions" or such quak quak to beat around the bush.

Paying high taxes may actually be one of the reasons why NL is such a good place to live. We redistribute wealth while also providing a safe, well-ran place for everyone. Trains come on time, roads don't have pot holes, we have public healthcare, public and affordable universities, a social safety net and a flourishing economy. Wouldn't say dutch are very tolerant though :-)
You are definitely right about the taxes, but I just wanted to make a joke about it ;). And yes, there are intolerant people everywhere in the world. I think in general, people in The Netherlands are quiet tolerant. But at the end of the day it’s also who you surround yourself with of course 😊

Indeed, the taxes may be high, but you actually get what you pay for more than any other country I have spent any time in!
One of the other things I've noticed, is how clean and well-maintained everything is, relatively speaking. When you cross the border into Belgium or Germany, you will almost immediately notice a lot more run-down buildings and streets, and usually more litter everywhere as well. This of course differs a lot for each place, but in general, everything here just seems cleaner than abroad...

What? The Dutch are often ranked as the worst dressed and sloppy. They tend to be casual in many aspects of their lives. Look how they park facing away from traffic and how people aren't punctual.

Finland is supposed to be the happiest, but actually it is the least unhappy, there is a clear distinction. However, in the Netherlands we have the happiest children...

Nice Video, greetings from Germany. When I lived in Spain for studying a friend asked if she should come to Germany to live there. I proposed to go to the Netherlands because in average people seem to be more open minded and nicer.
Once Austrian actor Christoph Waltz said that German are very unpolite and rude. In contrast Austrians are very polite but they don't mean it that way ;-). I travel to the Netherlands 1-2 times a year for vacation in wonderful Zealand.

Hej. I'm from southern Germany. There is something very unusual about me: my best friend lives in the Netherlands. I came to visit a few times now. I love it. It is more relaxed, more open, somehow you feel people are happier. For example this friday at work weekend radio thing. Unthinkable in Germany. The reason why i write a comment in the first place: i'd like to ask you if you can tell your favorite dutch joke about germans. PLEASE! lol

A long time ago I was in COD lobby when a American guy stated he loved to go to Europe one day and wondered what would be the best place to go to was. A Belgium guys said he had to go to Paris, it was the best city to go to by far. The American guy said he seriously considered going there and asked if anyone had any experiences going there. It was at this moment a German guy entered the chat and said in German that his grandpa was going to Paris this summer on holiday as well. His grandpa would be going to Paris be the second time aber diesemal ohne panzer XD

I love people being honest and just say what they think without a filter. It sometimes hurts a little but I rather have that then not knowing what really is going on in their mind. I would not survive in the USA for a week :) every freaking conversation people trying to be nice to each other instead of really showing their feelings and thoughts.

@@Super_Chief I absolutely agree. I think it is perfectly possible to be nice respectful and honest at the same time. The only problem is that the balance is different to different people. I can only speak for the people I like to encounter. I prefer nice people as long as their trying to be be nice does not win from saying their honest thoughts and opinions.
Possibly nitpicking --size and density doesn't really have that much to say in determining how easy it is to get around by bike. There's plenty small and densely populated places, like the Bahamas, that are still heavily car-centric, like and there's bigger, less dense countries that still manage to have good public transit and biking infrastructure where it makes sense. Look at the neighbouring country of Belgium, which I believe is even smaller, and how car-centric it is, and how much harder and more dangerous it is to get around on a bike.
Great video, though, and I think that if I was to live anywhere but in my home country (Norway, if you were wondering), it'd probably be the Netherlands 😊 .

In my opinion The Netherlands is certainly an interesting place to live. But of course I'm biased haha. All of your options could be interesting and you should choose what's best for you and do your own research :)

Gezellig comes from the German Gezellshaft ('community', or literally 'making together'). Germans also use it (Gesellig).
It's not that difficult defining it, but it *is* hard to find a proper translation for it, especialy in a single word.

For all Americans who feel a little envie there is a solution, the Netherlands are for many the happiest place on Earth, but there are sort of Embassies of The Netherlands in the US, they are called Happy Homes.

I love visiting the Netherlands. People are friendly. My mother tongue is Afrikaans enabling me to read the language and understand parts of the language. Something on my bucket list is to bike tour the Netherlands one day

Als echte en directe Nederlander heb ik natuurlijk wat commentaar: fietsen heeft niks met "Nederland is klein" te maken. Je fietst toch niet van Maastricht naar Groningen? Fietsen is voor korte afstanden, zoals je al zei: minder dan 10 km. En in 99% van alle steden in de wereld kom je met 10 km overal waar je wilt zijn. En daarnaast zijn die steden ook allemaal plat, steden ontwikkelen zich niet in de bergen, maar op platte stukken, meestal aan een rivier of zo. Er zou in de meeste steden in de wereld gewoon gefietst kunnen worden, als de gemeentebesturen daar open voor zouden staan. En daar gaat het mis: straten worden gezien als alleen voor de auto's, en de mensen willen alleen maar meer en bredere wegen voor hun auto's.

The best city from the Netherlands is Gent* in my opinion. The soothing Dutch accent, the beers, the friendly people, not arogant at all. I see you like Rotterdam, but I can't bare it. It one big potion of stress hormones. You need one week to detox from a visit. *Irony. It is Belgium. But from my perspective, living in Brabant, Gent is closer than Amsterdam. And it feels very similar, but better. A tourist would not understand the rather arbitrary line between the Netherlands and Vlaanderen.
Haha I don't really like Rotterdam tbh. I just used some B-roll of different cities to give people an impression of The Netherlands. I also like Gent, but my favourite city in The Netherlands is probably Utrecht.
Dutch guy here. My take: Netherlands is nice when you have a lot of money so you can buy a nice house and live in a nice neighbourhood (because its relatively safe here in comparison to other countries). Also pretty nice if you have a business/are zzper. But other than that its pretty shit. Wages are low as fack. Way too low for the housing prices (yeah i am lookint at you government, you guys fcked up real bad on this one lmfao). Everybody is rude. Very hard to make friends here if you dont already have them from childhood. Also the society is very individualistic. This can be a good thing: no one will bother you. But also a bad thing if you have problems: no one will help you (this can be seen with recent events in Rotterdam). There is virtually no nature here. So if you are like me who likes hiking then you are born in the wrong place. Also, its overpopulated as fck here, so its very hard to find a place without people and relax by yourself. Furthermore, because of its densely populated areas, noise pollution is a real thing here. Also this place is contaminated with PFAS to the aboslute bone and the air quaility is also really bad. I'd rather live in the US or something, or maybe Norway.
I get what you’re saying. The Netherlands isn’t perfect. While opinions about the Netherlands may vary from person to person, for me, it's a place that I deeply cherish and love :).

@mauricio533 Although I can agree with the sentiment of your comment it also seems to show a lack of awareness of how life would be in other countries/cultures. Yes our governement is messing up, in some ways even more than others, but that said the social safety net in the NL is one of the better ones in the world. You say if a Dutchie has problems they won't get help; that's simply not true. It's far from ideal but it's more than possible to get the help you need.
My main point; There's still much to be desired for in our tiny country but in comparison to other countries our living standards are some of the best possible ones available right now.

I didnt watch the video yet. However i have lived in seveeral countries including the NL. Several Dutch friends attempted suicide and several had bad mental breakdowns. I had horrible experiences with health care. Much better in Germany. There is no nature the taxes are high...everytbing is more expensive. There is no food culture really...well kind of but its more bland. The weather is not good. Amsterdam is a joke.
Given...a lot of Dutchies seem really happy but foreigners are not included basically at all. Very minimally. The place where i lived...always under constriction. Ive been to around 100 countries and it is one of my least favorite so although this girl seems nice and genuine I wouldnt believe the hype ahout the country. I will say its nice they speak English and also the system is easy to navigate but all in all I sctually consider it to be not such a great place in most ways. Every other country I lived in I enjoyed much more and most expats said the same thing

(in all seriousness though, mental care has never been really good in the NL, but at least it's there. I hear similar to your stories of my German friends, and Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish as well actualy.)
No nature : not true. Although cultivated there's still plenty of green places to go, within reach for most people.
No food culture : Depending on where you live it can be bad, but generaly speaking the food culture in the NL, from local producers to more than decent restaurants is way above average.
The weather : Really? Now you're just fishing for things to complain about.
