  • During The Tony Awards, the cast of "Come From Away" performed "Welcome to the Rock."
    It only won one out of its seven Tony nominations, including a nomination for Best Musical, for Best Direction of a Musical for its director, Christopher Ashley.
    "Come From Away" star Jenn Colella lost the best featured actress in a musical Tony to Rachel Bay Jones of "Dear Evan Hansen."
    The show also lost out on the best lighting design of a musical award to Bradley King of "Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812."
    “Come From Away” is set in Gander in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks.
    The remote East Coast town saw its population double in size as it sheltered 6,579 passengers and crew from planes diverted when U.S. air space was closed.
    Directed by Christopher Ashley, the show includes a book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein.

    This is honestly the only cast on Broadway that really just feels like real people sitting down to tell a story - it almost doesn't feel staged at all. I love it

    Honestly I was shocked that there were only 12 people in the cast. It really felt like there were more people, which is a testament of how the musical was staged and how the actors acted.

      It’s at least more apparent this year if you’re comparing the Apple TV pro shot of Come From Away to the movie adaptation of the great music, but very cringey story of Dear Evan Hansen. Come From Away, Great Comet, and Groundhog Day were all robbed by the social media monster that DEH became. It was like all the poor shows that opened the same year as Hamilton. Never stood a chance.

    As my name says, I’m in Toronto, born and bread. I’ve been all across this great country of our, but never NFL, until this event happened, so my husband and I decided to pay a visit, to see if homophobia wasn’t an issue as they claimed…and you know what we found? The kindest, warmest, most loving people we’d ever met in our lives! Complete strangers literally took us by the hand, and offered their home as a place for us to stay. We had booked a hotel, but we just couldn’t say no, and that was only the beginning. They took us for a tour of the entire town and beyond, literally made us feel as if we had been family forever. These are total strangers, who took us into their home, and made damn sure that we knew they didn’t care where we are from or who we love, but loved us unconditionally. I come from a big city, Toronto’s the fourth largest city in North America, a place where no one talks to anybody, and to go to the small town in the middle of nowhere, and to be treated like royalty, was absolutely unbelievable. Everything they say about the place is actually underrated. I can’t say enough good things about the people of Newfoundland, they are absolutely incredible. If ever I lose faith in humanity, I need only remember our trip there, and I feel better. The world can be a pretty brutal place as you all know, but it’s just so nice to know there’s a place out there that’s not corrupted by the cruelty of society, a place where you’re treated as a human being, with unconditional love. I couldn’t say enough good things about them. I know it might not seem like a tourist destination, but not only are the people beautiful, but the landscapes are even more beautiful, and I highly recommend that everyone go there at least once in their life to be reminded of what humanity should be all about! Just makes me even more proud to be Canadian.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

      As a Newfoundlander myself, I can say with certainty that this is true. As the song said, “where everyone is nice but it’s never nice above”. And for anyone who sees this and wants to go to Newfoundland, it’s pronounced New-fend-land.

    Hearing it now, this musical deserved a hell of a lot in regards to rewards. I think the issue was that DEH had an easier to digest societal problem (Mental Illness is an issue that needs to be addressed, which is typically a topic where the solution is agreeable amongst the public). Come From Away seems to have a message that I am trying to convey in my (I'm literally drunk btw) comment, but I believe its message is one of acceptance, tolerance, compassion, empathy, and sympathy, so much of each of these traits that enabled the people of Gander to (I honestly don't know what word to use here to encapsulate what the people of Gander did) care (this word, 'care,' is doing a lot of heavy-lifting) for the people from the planes. But at that time, the American Public was not entirely comfortable (sadly) with hearing that message. I think that the infamous events that have occurred since this Tony's, in addition to any other despicable injustices that have escaped the national spotlight, are evidence that the U.S. was not ready and still is not quite ready to hear a message of empathy for all. (I think empathy for all is a better summation of the message. If I'm hurting, I want consolation. Anyone with empathy can see that. Anyways.) Many Americans love to proclaim that they're empathetic while completely ignoring the plights of others. While I think DEH was a great musical, I genuinely think that CFA was overlooked due to its "controversial" message. (It isn't controversial, I just dont think the general U.S. populace could handle its message of love and compassion WITHOUT PREJUDICE OR BIAS to all.)

    • @caitlynmiller8956
      @caitlynmiller8956 2 роки тому +19

      Come From Away is a very moving musical that has INTENSE emotions, and while DEH has intense emotions as well, I can’t seem to describe how i feel every time I listen to Come From Away. CFA was 100% robbed

    • @SEGASister
      @SEGASister 2 роки тому +22

      Honestly, the difference is in execution. While DEH feels incredibly manipulative in his delivery (not helped by a rather manipulative protagonist) and the message ultimately gets lost in the in-universe (and in reality) sensationalism, CFA… doesn’t. It isn’t just genuine in its approach on the subject matter, but it is dealt in a sincerely heartfelt manner.

    • @dompie23
      @dompie23 Рік тому +3

      I just watched the musical last night for the first time (not live sadly) but I had read the book before. I think you're pretty close with your analysis. I just have one thing to add. A couple of times in the story, somebody will say something and imply they are more at ease or better in Gander than they were in America. This is especially true for the black character. At one point he even says 'I'm not scared of getting robbed, I'm not scared of getting shot...', he literally says he was better in Gander. I think Americans might feel like they are insulting the USA at a time when they had been a victim. I think it melts together with your point. I think Americans almost get jealous at the ability of the population of Gander to be so loving and compassionate, at their ability to be better.

When I finally googled it to get an understanding of the story, I was shocked - I'd heard of this town, I remember hearing what they did, I remember the news in the weeks after the attacks talking about this small corner of the world and how kind they were in the face of such evil. I immediately went to listen to the rest of the show on Spotify, and am now looking to see the show live as theater returns. This show absolutely deserves the accolades.

    I knew nothing about this musical came across it by accident courtesy of Spotify hear the first song It hooked me and I wondered what it was about. Had to listen to it all. So good love it. Do you know even better than Les Miserables and I am a devote fan. The rock tells such a story. One I did know. Oh love to see . If it's playing best luck. It's worth everything. Low love 😍 it

    The Broadway community is split into two camps. People who think Come From Away should have won, and people who think The Great Comet should have won.

    Was this video gone for a year or two? It is my favorite musical theatre performance ever and I watched it religiously, the arrangement is different from the cast recording and this version makes me cry. Thank you for bringing it back.

    The great thing about Jenn's *"farthest place you'll get from Disneyland"* line is that her character Beverly was piloting a flight from Charles de Gaulle on 9/11 - the closest major airport to *Disneyland Paris*

    this musical was snubbed so hard it’s almost criminal. i saw this show on tour and it was easily one of the best shows ive seen, i was in the balcony and it still felt so intimate and vulnerable. And while ive never seen great comet live just from the music alone it was robbed, the diversity and whiplash in every song while still telling a coherent story, a beautiful opera. I’ve seen dear evan hansen and while the cast was great it was just to mediocre next to these giants of musicals

      Yea. It is STFD. Same with when she tells him to roll down the window. They omitted another word from that part too. :). Loved the show. I miss Broadway. Cannot wait for it to come back soon! :D.
