I think you guyz dont know about this movie..Its not a story..Its made based on the real life incidents in Tamilnadu. Search Keelvenmani massacre in Google. TN has been captured by Naicker kings and lands of native tamils been captured by Telugu naidu and naicker castes. Tamil SC dalits who worked in the agri fields demanded the hike in the daily wages. due to that upper caste naidu community got angry and killed 43 people by setting their huts in fire. Dhanush represented the dalit man who lost his famiily in the massacre. its all about caste inequality, in this movie the killers family try to kill the dalit dhanush son

They show such weapons in tamil movies because it's the tradition. They are part of the day to day lives. Every house will have a sword either for daily purposes etc. Like gurkhas have kukhris..
Tamils were iron smiths since ages. That's one of the reasons the Romans came to tamil nadu for trading, they used to trade swords knifes from tamil nadu for rich perfumes in return from the romans.
