Every anime fan has different opinions on anime, and everyone definitely has BAD takes. So I went out into the streets of Tokyo to ask weebs in Japan on their WORST opinions on anime.

But is is it really incest? Like the only relation they have is that their parents have a paper that they're married. Not blood related, didn't grow up as siblings (as far as I know). It's still was boring to me, I read until chapter 60 or something than dropped it.

This should totally turn into a series. It was very fun, as well as aggravating to watch, and kept me wanting to watch.
The only part where I cringed and got annoyed hardcore was the guy saying Domestic Girlfriend is a more solid series than Cowboy Bebop. Like…what? 💀
Yeah isn’t this the first time Joey has done a street interview format? He’s good at it. Plus I think many of his audience want to see the discussion of anime culture from ppl living in Japan.

Nah I agree with the girl who said fairytail wasn't that bad. It's nowhere near a masterpiece by all means and the fanservice is too much, but it's just a fun little shonen anime. Not all shows have to be deep they just have to be enjoyable.

My hot take is that Hagakure in MHA should not exist. It is nice to see an invisible person who can only turn their body invisible explore their power, but Hagakure literally does nothing. Her power’s downsides means she can only do reconnaissance meaning she can’t be in major battles. She is not a character with great personality. She does not have her implied separate story. She doesn’t even factor into another person’s story. Heck, for the Aoyama reveal, you can have another person feel betrayed and tell Aoyama off, and it would still work as well. Hagakure has nothing besides that. Hagakure can be excised out of MHA without consequence.
8:49 Glad someone still know and appreciate welcome to the NHK. It is an anime about Hikkomori struggling to live in the society and conspiracy. It really hit deep in the feels if you are a long time shut-in. This interview video is better than the rest where they usually talk about mainsteam animes

@@aaronmontgomery2055 Okay look, the first FMA does have a better initial vibe. However the story progression is what makes brotherhood surpass the original. The best FMA would be a combination of the feel of the original with the story of brotherhood.

@@aaronmontgomery2055 FMA03 is better imo. The characters, mainly the homonculi, are way more interesting in 03. On top of that, I feel like Brotherhood has so much "comedy" jammed into inappropriate moments. Also, I know that Brotherhood kind of assumes you've seen or read the story up until the point where 03 diverged, so the pacing is way too quick in the beginning for my liking. I honestly thought that 03 had better cuts of animation when it came to fights, or at least on par with Brotherhood there as well. I just really preferred the darker tone throughout of 03.
@gooperman the problem is the plot issues. I couldn't deal with the inconsistencies. But I am the type to prefer story and plot. My favorite anime is monster still.
I share the opinion that Berserk would be an amazing live-action show if it was adapted properly. Unfortunately I would not be totally optimistic about the quality of it if it were announced to be in production, but it had the right people behind it and were backed by something like HBO or Amazon, I think it could potentially be incredible.

Not Amazon. Their LOTR and Wheel of Time series were absolute dogshit garbagefires, I wouldn't trust them with anything fantasy at this point. HBO though, maybe...
It would have to be a really serious movie, not the classic action Hollywood blockbuster. It would have to be one of those 3h movies where they spend 10min on a guy walking with a nice scenery in the background and shit.
@@amuro9624 I would prefer it not being a movie at all, since that wouldn't be the length and format that would do it justice. I'm thinking more of a GoT-style show with hour long episodes which stays as faithful as possible to the source material and that doesn't pull punches with the gritty and dark elements. Even if it was just the golden age arc like the old anime, it could be really great if done properly, because the fantasy elements are relatively scarce and wouldn't require constant use of high quality special effects.
@@bunklypeppz yeah that's probably true. I'm just biased against American series because they tend to blatantly try to extend the shows runtime by just shuffling characters around to constantly create new problems and never conclude anything until it drops so much in quality that it gets cancelled.
If they're faithful and know where to stop it might be better than a movie but even then i don't think they would have the budget to do anything outside of the golden age.

When we stumble across a bad live-action adaptation of an anime, we often ask ourselves "Who asked for this? Who is this even for?"

It's fine not to like something that's popular, but saying it's bad because you don't enjoy it is kinda dumb, at least bring some semi-objective arguments. It did sound like people just picked the most popular thing and called it bad cz they knew it was the most controversial thing they could do.
I held off on watching AoT but when I finally watched it I realized how amazing it was... in the first 3 seasons, then it was a steady decline. Then after MAPPA took over and it's garbage since, but it's probably not MAPPA'd fault, just the story turned bad
popular things arent popular because theyre necessarily and objectively good, they are popular because they cater to the biggest audience possible, most music lovers hate pop songs, not because "they are famous thus i should hate it to be more special" but because the popular stuff tends to be bland and digestible so that it can reach a bigger audience, the same goes for every other form of media
The fact that everybody talked about attack on titan just proves how influential that show is

Edit: After reading y’alls comments, I have to admit, that nothing could do the original K. Miura manga justice, however if a big company such as HBO made it, and really got the grasp of the original artwork with the right amount of money (which is absolutely ridiculous, if we take into account a show of similar caliber such as HOT had to deal with paychecks 2mil per episode) and a huge fanbase having their back, hyping up the adaptation, that huge risk may pay out.
for sure, but it depends. With a good company making it and mad funds, like if HBO made it? then yes live action would be amazing, cause its just fantasy shit. But with "no funds", or at least less than HBO has? its easier to make an anime
Berserk fans are just so desperate to get one worthy adaptation that they would be ready to go to such lengths.

He is on to something; however, one big reason for GOT or HOT doing good is the massive budget they get.
House of Dragon had a $200 million budget for its first season, about $2 million per episode. A tremendous commitment for even a big studio in Japan.
However, if a studio does take a risk and lands, it will likely encourage others.
Berserk having a good live-action is a take I've never heard. That's actually interesting. If we take a somewhat closer comparison like the Witcher (season 1), it might actually kinda work? Obviously not 1-to-1, but bring a unique version. They'd need to nail the emotional parts hard though, and probably won't ever happen in our lifetime due to Miura's death, and not knowing whether or not it'll be okay.
Fans would definitely crucify the live-action concept immediately, but if worked by a big studio with deep passion towards Berserk, I can see it happening.
Witcher was the first thing that came to my mind too.
I am actually surprised to see no one thought of this before. Berserk needs to have a proper live action adaptation like first few seasons of game of thrones.
I’ve been saying this for years. The first project that came to mind that a Berserk live action could borrow from was actually the film “the Northman”. I think it’s tone, atmosphere and revenge plot is very close to berserk’s. 8-12 45 minute long episodes should also be enough to adapt Black Swordsman and Golden Age arc at a good pace without sacrificing any emotional beats relevant to Guts and Casca’s relationship like they did in the Golden age movies.
You have never heard of it before because berserk fans just like to shit on everything thats not the manga mindlessly. Otherwise its not that hard to deduct that if the anime is very difficult to nail then the live action should be the go-to.

Hi Joey, I think the lady talking about a cat teaching history was referring to “Night on the Galactic Railroad”. It’s an experimental anime movie from the mid 80s, and as much as I love weird anime, I could not get through it as literally nothing of note happens in the first 40 minutes
I thought it was Meow Meow Japanese History cause I had a hard time watching that show too

@@hokutology1718 It may very well be, but compared to early Ghibli, the OG Vampire Hunter D, Wicked City etc it’s far more slowly paced making it borderline unwatchable for me. I’ll go back and try to finish it 100%, but the second half would have to be a masterpiece to make the exposition crawl worth it
@@SpencerioQ The second half is where all its heavy themes are explored, so it's well worth going back to. On a side note, it's far better than VHD and Wicked City. I really like the Amano and Kawajiri artstyles, but still.

I've been wishing for a berserk live action for years. it can be an epic live action like lord of the rings if done right. it needs the enormous budget the story deserves. seriously, with the right budget and the right people behind it, the live action would be legendary. but i would love an anime of it as well. but it's so hard to think of a studio adapting it's art style perfectly. even the 1997 anime didn't had that great of an animation. but the soundtrack and writing was good for it.

Cats teaching history, maybe she's referring to neko neko nihonshi. Thing has like 5 seasons and a movie. It's also aimed at small children, so makes sense that an older teen or adult wouldn't be able to sit through it so easily.
Yes, more videos like this please. Loved the video. Would really love a video of you asking japanese weebs their favorite and least favorite anime and manga are. This would give us foreigner weebs ideas about what is actually popular in Japan.
Japan got newtype magazines and stuff which had alot of rankings for characters and it may dissapoint alot of western peopl and similarly for LNs they do alot of polls, rn Oregairu (2016), [SAO, Certain Magical Index, Ryou's Work Never Done] (2020), [Classroom of the Elite, Acendance of a Bookworm, Chitose in Ramune Bottle] (2023) are LNs which were so popular that they had to remove them from ranking pools cause they were always destroying them but you can check recent polls on internet or smth

10:40 I'm actually a fan of the EVA TV series ending. It seemed perfect. I had watched the entire show in one sitting with a group of anime club friends so maybe that was part of it. The show was over hyped to me before watching it but I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't think that's a hot take. In fact, that's what a lot of people say repel them from One Piece. That, and the episode/volume count.
Art style didn't bother me, though. Always loved cartoons, so goofy shit doesn't bother me. One Piece was the first anime I really committed to. It made me an anime fan.

@@vedbergsmagic3217 Those aren't really awful to me. Backstory helps me care about characters. Standing and shouting is just standard classic shonen, though (in the anime) it does get more drawn out as the pacing gets slower. But that's why I just binge it in chunks these days.
Watching it sparks a sense of adventure and defiance I had when I was a kid. I think that, and an attachment to the characters, is the reason I keep watching.

I feel proud by the amount of hatred AOT get, it only means it reached so many people with very varied tastes. I mean when a TV Show is so popular to the point of being statistically voted the most in demand TV Show of 2022 it's inevitable to attract viewers who were intrigued by its popularity without actually being interested in what it's offering.

Also why aren't people allowed to call One Piece mid after 100 episodes? How much more time do they have to waste before forming an opinion? I'm sure you and thousands other people have dropped anime after just 3 episodes because they were "boring", but people are not allowed to criticize One Piece after 100 episodes?! And all that when we have masterpieces that are only 13 episodes long.

the only live action anime that can work is the ones which require no CGI and the anime which are already the most realistic type of anime. I think Monster would actually make a very good live action anime because it's just humans, with no powers and it's just your typical murder mystery style anime which translates extremely well into live action. No CGI needed, all you need is very good actors and a very good production/director maybe like Tarantino.
The berserk live action take is actually kinda genius. I never thought about it like that, but I feel like it’s one of the few manga that would thrive as a live action.

@@GrowingDownUnder Cowboy Bebop's Few middle episodes were maybe boring... But certainly didn't feel mid. It's not a bingeable anime imo. Half the time it gives more sitcom vibes with all the banter between the crew that occurs.

@@atharvakokaje5818 bro it was very mid at least admit it, the episodic parts were as mid as you can get. A good story at least takes more than 12 episodes to build proper character development and give time to world build and use character progession. It's not something that can simply be done in 1 episode without simply being "mid". I feel like the whole first half of the anime was exactly doing that, just world building and fleshing out characters, the last half is the only time though we really saw some character development in the series. It's a shame the first half was so mid though because it focused more on the story episodic stories rather than the character it didn't even feel like the first half spent time developing Spike at all but rather focusing on the missions instead like the people he was chasing after. When it comes to anime my standards are extremely high, episodic anime automatically is mid that's just automatically where they go because no great or good anime is episodic for the reason I mentioned it takes a lot of episodes to really develop a full continuous story with the proper structure and elements needed. The result is each episode being rushed with story telling, there's simply no way to make a good story in 1 episode without rushing it. It's rushed and mid, the last half is the only half which really matters.

Jesus these AoT takes, lmao. While I never continued watching after the season 1 break, because the setting of the show wasn't my cup of tea, everything I've seen so far from later seasons looks amazing and the lore seems very interesting. I could never confidently call AoT mid or even bad.
Of course AoT isn't mid, it's utter garbage.
I think its because it strayed away from shonen type beats where action was secondary but honestly thats what I loved most about the evolution of the manga and the later seasons where it becomes kinda darker and more political.

I get that thinking AoT season 1 is mid, but claiming the show in its entirety is mid when you've seen very little is kinda wild. And I understand people scoff at the "it gets good later, I promise!" excuse, but man, you can't expect the story to be as deep and interconnected as it currently is right off the bat. That shit needs to be earned in storytelling.
Like people who never watch Clannad After Story because of how bad Clannad is. After Story is much better if you watch the original because you see the character grow and the contrast from a magical high school life to a depressed adult.
Or people who skip Jojo parts when each part carries an important piece of history for the Jojo family, especially since everything connects back to Dio.

I don't think it's wild at all. If a show is underwhelming to the point that you drop it midway through season 1, it's a pretty good indication you would consider it mid in it's entirety since it failed to be engaging and compelling enough to hold your attention. Even with a show with as many twists and changes to the status quo as AoT, a story having what you'd consider to be a mid or shit foundation will inevitably drag it down in it's entirety. People aren't expecting shows to start off with several seasons worth of build paying off immediately, they're just expecting characters, plot, etcetera to make them want to watch several seasons in the first place.
@@kiiturii I've only gotten attached to three or four characters at most by the latest season so that seems like a pretty fair take. Characters has never been the strength of AoT as much it's plot in my opinion.

@@terrificape8268 But you don't know who would be important and thus not die at first, other than the main trio ofc. By the time you know, you've lost a lot of room for growing attachment, because you started with a default disinterest.
I think this is something that gets better with second viewing (or if you read the manga first) as you know who to pay attention to. And thus this breeds a rather polarized opinion. Those who like the show would likely consume it multiple times and thus get the proper experience of attachment etc. Those who don't gets a horrible experience of confusion and detachment from their one and only viewing.
I think it is good for a show to give more when viewed multiple times. However I think it is bad if a show requires multiple viewing to be enjoyed at all.
