Back then finding all this detail and the images about the origins of watercolour paint, brushes and supports as well as noteworthy artists who used the medium took months & months of research in actual museums, galleries and libraries! I can therefore appreciate the weeks & weeks & weeks... of accumulated time you spent finding and assembling this CONCISE BUT THROUGH HISTORY. Thanks again!!

fantastic, I really appreciate this, thank you. I always loved how dreamlike watercolor was. from somewhat vague and fluid, almost impressionistic, to bold and sharp, like when a single object strikes you and seems to be more deeply colorful and well defined then the rest of reality.

Thank you, Jenny! This was a very comprehensive history lesson! Albrecht Dürer was a genius who invented quite a few things. For instance, he was the first painter to sign with a logo, a thing he must have taken away from his father's workshop who was a goldsmith (At least that is my theory!). However, I am very sure that he took inspiration from the Chinese paintings as you implied and perfected it in his own style as he always did. 😘💛🧡❤

@@JennyMoedKorpelaArt I had researched a little bit more recently because we went to see the Leonardo Da Vinci-exhibition in Paris on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his passing. They have a lot of similarities in their creativity as well as being famous during their own lifetimes (AD was around 20 years younger). Their processes were different but they were both multifaceted geniuses. Leonardo did most of his sketches in ink and sepia and he sketched a lot! AD used ink too but also far more silverpoint than Leonardo as well as watercolours - as you noted - and he usualy produced finished artworks from his sketches. AD produced so many copper engravings in unbelievably fine detail, it is still difficult to fathom. They were the easiest way to make money in those days. Leonardo was not business minded like that but relied on his fame more which sadly ended in the fact that we only know of 14 finished paintings overall. I love these kind of things. If I was to start my education again, I would study art history. 😉
@@ChrissieNicely I would have loved to visit that exhibition. I read a book about Leonardo by Walter Isaacson not long ago, and it was fascinating! He based his book on Leonardo's own notes and letters and notes about him by others. I love art history as well, and I almost did take a degree in it to complement my arts degree. But I decided that I prefer reading the art history on my own terms... 😊 Thank you so much for sharing, Chrissie! 🥰

Interestingly, it is more common to use BCE and CE instead of BC and AD in dating art to celebrate different religious view’s instead of basing it on the Christian calendar.
Well, the abbreviations bce and ce stands for before common era and common era, but are essential just different names for the same thing and based on the same calendar. Sorry, I know you know that, but I had to look it up. Where I grew up it is more common to use bc and ad. English is not my first language though, so that might have something to do with why I never heard of bce and ce 😁

No, I had never heard of casein paint until about a year ago when I saw James Gurney use it, and I did not come across it while doing the research for this video, or not under the name casein anyway. It is an old medium though, as old as tempera or any other watercolour medium. If I have understood it correctly casein is very similar to tempera, but uses a milk protein as binder instead of egg.
Well, when starting out with art in general, of course! 😁But I meant when starting out with 'painting', people tend to be introduced to, or turn to watercolours first, especially in Finland where I grew up. How was it where you grew up? I guess it can be huge differences between different countries in this regard.

Pencil drawings, then watercolor pencils, then gouache and watercolor. But people may choose watercolor because it's cheaper in the beginning. With acrylic and oil you have to invest a lot before you can even make your first stroke. Meanwhile there are tons of cheap watercolor sets and almost all kinds of sketchbook is okay in the beginning. Of course later on people upgrade and then it's getting more and more expensive.

Yes, that is why exactly watercolour seems to be the first choice of painting medium because you can get it fairly cheap and is readily available in so many places (not to mention how easy it is to clean up after watercolour painting session... 😂). But it is quite a tricky medium to 'master', especially with the cheaper materials, and that is why I think it is a little funny that it has become the 'go-to' medium to start painting with. I remember giving up on watercolours early in my art career because no matter what I did, I couldn't get it to look anything like what I could see other artist doing. As soon as I started painting in oil, however, my art leapt forward. It wasn't until just a few years ago when I bought my first artist-grade watercolour paint and real cotton paper that I started getting the result I wanted. And I found that artist-grade watercolour paint and paper is actually more expensive than oil colours and canvas...
And how many languages do you speak my good sir? English is not my native language and I do the best I can. If you don’t find my FREE content good enough, then I suggest you go somewhere else. Have a good day.
