    I was present during this live recording, it’s the best version I think, jerry was using a 1960 les Paul and he was on fire that night, pigpen was at the top of his game also, I’m 78 years old and wish I could go back to the 60s, being a sound engineer during this period was out of this world.

    One of my most vivid memories as a kid was listening to this song play on my parent’s old stereo, windows wide open, the summer breeze mixing with the smell of a freshly cleaned kitchen where bbq was a cookin’, and watching my little sister hop up and down bopping to this beat. Those were the days man, the absolute best of the best

    Exactly fifty years ago today on May 24th, 1970 the Grateful Dead made their United Kingdom concert debut with a four-hour show at the Hollywood Music Festival at Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Newcastle, England...
    They opened their set with "Casey Jones" and seventeen songs later ended with "Turn On Your Love Light"...
    Mungo Jerry was the opening act, and at the time his "In The Summertime" was at #13 on the U.K. Singles chart at the time...

    I have so many memories with this live version. This is the tune that really got me to get into The Grateful Dead.

    I've been listening to this number at least once a month for 35 years only because of one moment. When Jerry Garcia bends that string to begin the solo. It's so perfect.

      I just can’t ever get over that final “whatever you call it” where they just hit all the notes perfectly. Grande Finale???

    I was lucky. I worked at a place in NYC's lower East side in the 60's that the Dead frequented. Truthfully, I was never a hard core dead head but a fan, yes. And this was an anthem I loved.

    That dueling drums at the 1:08 mark with Bill and Mickey fantastic. Mickey said that pigpen was the musician in the Grateful Dead. It was so sad that pigpen was unable to adapt to the changing sounds in the Grateful Dead. And don't forget the song he wrote on American Beauty operator an underrated song. RIP Ron Mckernan.

      Pigs loss was deep for sure, but Bob stepped in quite nicely. Some of my favorite Dead songs have Pig on lyrics, but damn if there aren’t a ton that I love with Bob and Gerry belting out lyrics too!

      I saw the Dead at Woodstock and Golden Gate Park (with Pigpen). Country Joe in People's Park, and the Original Pink Floyd at a Ball Room in Los Angeles. My mother picked us up after that one.

    This is as good as it gets. Gospel vocals, upbeat blues, raunchy rock and roll all in one. Definitely the Best of the Grateful Dead. This version and 1966 Midnight Hour combine wrap vocal ad lib with blues and rock that changed what could be done with blues. Amazing stuff. Get up Now! Little Bit Higher!! Ahhh___!!!

      Thats the answer: raunchy! This song carries with me, i remember a MSG encore with this, not a dry eye in the house, puddles on the floor, xtc for all... Silence on the train ride home... We all got it...

    This version on the greatest hits I loved when grew up. Brother had this cd.
    From looking it up this six min version seems like it has been edited down and from a longer 15 min version. I guess they cut it down to the best parts. Longer version:

      It was greatest hits album-this would've taken up half the LP-- Hearing this made me buy Live/Dead for the full version. And that's when things got really weird!

    • @fatherdmj
      @fatherdmj 6 років тому +2

      It originally appeared on a Warner Loss Leaders record called "The Big Ball". It's meant to give you a taste of the longer version on Live/Dead.

    • @anajonda
      @anajonda 6 років тому +1

      The Big Ball was easily the best (well, my favourite, anyway) of the Loss Leaders series. Where else can you listen to this, Oh Well (Fleetwood Mac), The Loner (Neil Young), Flying (Faces), WPLJ (Zappa and MOI), Fire And Rain (James Taylor), Coming Into Los Angeles (Arlo Guthrie), This Whole World (Beach Boys), Caravan (Van Morrison), and so many more all in a single (double actually) $2(!) package?
      (but don't take my word for it, see for yourself!)

      Bobby Blue Bland was special. But I don’t think the dead ever did a cover to try and top it. They did it out of respect, admiration, enjoyment and to spread the gospel.
