Honestly, they should be mad at the parts stores that sell to repair shops. I can get stuff off Rockauto for 25-50% LESS THAN OUR SHOP COST!!! I have an employee discount but it still can't touch Rockauto's prices. If our shop parts cost was 50% less then we would be charging 50% less.

I added a can of freon to my car A/C that I bought at Walmart. The A/C improved a bit, so I knew that it had a leak. I took it to a mechanic and he vacuumed out all of the freon, fixed the leak, and refilled it for under $200 total. I prefer letting a professional fix my A/C, because a mistake with the A/C could cost me a bundle.

Oh my god... that makes me so mad on Facebook forums when people ask about a quote they got for a repair from a shop and everyone starts telling them how overpriced it is. You can get all those parts on ebay for a Nickle and do it yourself in 30 minutes. Or they quote them a DIY price. I think everyone knows it's cheaper to do it yourself. That's not what they're asking. The shop is quoting the job with quality parts, and then labor of course for the techs to do the repair. Your ebay and Amazon parts are garbage number 1, and number 2 someone with no jack, tools, or experience probably doesn't need to be working on their car anyway. If someone asks if something is a good shop price I'll tell them yes or no. Not tell them they can do it cheaper themselves with junk parts from ebay. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Alex your the Man always upfront and honest. It is definitely hard to find a trustworthy mechanic that’s not trying to up-sale everything. A friend just got used car and bought new tires the tire place told her that she needed some parts replaced before they could do the alignment. A so called mechanic in Marietta Ga. try to charge her for tools He Had tie-rod puller, ball joint separator and specialty alignment device on the estimate. He gets parts from Oreilly’s
So I looked on the app to see how much and what the warranty was he told her 90 days on all parts come to find out there limited lifetime and he was marking the parts up 60%+. Thankfully she called me to see if almost $2800 was fair to get tie-rod ends, ball joints, and sway bar links, bushings replaced. I advised her to get a second opinion and come to find out she needed a hub, a tie rod end and sway bar links. Less than $400 bucks. There is a big problem nowadays where there is a shop on every other corner full of parts changers that are quick to take advantage of every opportunity to sell parts and no real mechanics anymore.
God Bless You Alex your a living legend..

But most shops I've been to are very reasonably prices. My labor is free to me, but I know you gotta pay other peoples time and gotta pay for your own time to earn a living. So I dont expect the prices to be the same but I was surprised that a quote I got just yesterday for an AC diagnostic and system recharge was not that much more than what It would have cost me, maybe double if I did a recharge, but they are able to do diagnostic work I can't right now.

Meaning, if a pound of 134a only costs $39.99, please don’t charge me $189.99 (exaggerated for emphasis) when you know doggone good and well the Freon only costed you $40/pound. Otherwise, I think shops can provide quality service for a reasonable price and could even work with you a little bit to help stay within your budget.

I HAVE A LEGITIMATE QUESTION: Where do you typically get your car parts from? For example, where would you typically source from if you needed two front struts? Thank you!

If you feel you can’t make the repair or don’t own all the proper tools to make the repair on your main daily driver do yourself a favor and just let a shop take care of you. Prices everywhere are out of control but parts and fluids are also going up. Big ups to all the people that can take care of repairs themselves but that’s not the case for most people. You might also ask family and trusted friends for a mobile mechanic to save a few bucks.

Not to forget that you have to warranty (part) of your repairs, pay rent or lease or whatever for your workplace, tools, knowledge ect. Important is that you do it right and are charging a fair price for that. Respect..

    1. Buy a building, insure a building, pay taxes on a building, repair a building, utilities on a building
    2. Buy YOUR OWN health insurance ($20,000+, no BS welfare "marketplace", disability, vision and dental
    3. No PTO, sick pay, holiday pay - if you aren't working, you aren't getting paid!

I understand mark up but sometimes its too much. I needed a new water pump. Pep boys installed it and got it from autozone which is connected to it. $70 charged me $160. If i brought it and gave it to them they would add more for labor.

He's right. Thank goodness i learned the basic mechanic work from my uncle. I remember wanting to replace all rotors and brakes on my Malibu the shop was going to charge me 600. I found a bundle from Detroit axle with both rear and front rotors woth the pads also. I saved 400 and my uncle put on one side and told me to do the rest and checked my work.
