I almost give up practicing pen tools, I watched several videos about this topic and all make me more confuse, it's hard to draw curve using handle... Then I found this video, your explanation is very clear, understandable, and easy to follow... Thank you so much💕 I also want to ask, how to change the line size of the pen ?
Glad it was helpful! Change the line weight of anything you draw with the Pen tool or Pencil tool by using the stroke weight icon in the common actions menu ( or Properties panel) when you select path with the dark selection arrow. Next line you draw will have this stroke weight setting.
I'm so grateful for you. It has been a very long time since working in illustrator. I've been on procreate for some time. This is an amazing video. Using Illustrator on the iPad I immediately went to the pen tool to rebuild logos and it works okay, but you have made me rethink the pencil tool entirely. Thank you.
@@LauraCoyle now if only they made the clipping mask easier to do. It’s way easier in Affinity Designer on iPad. Hopefully Adobe will adopt that method of simply dragging the object “into” the other object in the layers panel. It’s so easy. For some reason when I make a clipping mask in Illustrator iPad my objects lose their fill color.
@@WelbornJeff that sounds interesting, I haven't used Affinity, so I don't have a feel for how that works. In Illustrator on the desktop, the clipping mask shape always loses its "appearance" (stroke, fill, color, etc) and become invisible, so it's working the same way on the iPad - it's the expected behavior for Illustrator, but I can see how it seems weird. You always have to put the masking shape on top of the thing you want to mask, select them both, then in the menu choose Make Clipping Mask. At that point, the masking shape becomes invisible, the appearance of the object underneath stays the same. Once you have a clip group in the layers panel, and you draw a new object on the layer you can drag it inside the clip group and it will be masked with the other objects - so in that way it sounds like it works a little like Affinity.
@@LauraCoyle - THANK YOU for taking the time to put this all together. Will definitely be using this channel as a vector to becoming proficient on Illustrator.
is there a way to redraw the line with the pencil tool so it takes the shape of the new line? In illustrator for desktop I can draw a shape and if I am not happy with the shape i put the pencil on the line and draw where i wan the line to be and end back on the line and the old line takes the path of the new line. I can't seem to be able to do that with the ipad.
I have not seen that functionality in this version of Illustrator on the iPad - I know what you are talking about though. I'm hoping in the future there will be some version of the smooth tool, that you can use to could push the path around, reshape, after it's drawn, but we'll have to wait and see!
I actually came here looking for this also. I'm a regular desktop Illustrator user and have come to rely on both the "Smooth Tool" and the option you're talking about which is called "Edit Selected Paths" in the pencil tool's options (double click the pencil tool to turn it on/off). It's unfortunate that the iPad version doesn't have either of these, because they save me so much time. Hopefully they will add them in a future version. You can put in a feature request for these on Adobe's site. Laura, this is a really helpful video, thank you for sharing it!
Great video, just subscribed! Sorry if I missed this, but my kids and I can't seem to find a quick way to "fill in" a shape. It looks like Desktop Illustrator has a Paint Bucket Tool, but we're not seeing that in iPad version. Any ideas? I know this video touches on swapping the stroke and fill, but we weren't sure if that's the same thing. Edit: actually nevermind, I think we figured it out. You use the 2nd from the top tool, and touch the pencil to the line that makes up the shape you want to fill in. It automatically puts in a bunch of points all around that enclosure, and then you select the "fill" circle, and choose the color. Phew!
Thank you! Yes! you figured it out. In Illustrator, you create filled shapes by drawing with shape tools or by using the pen tool, pencil tool to draw a path and close it, by finishing at the starting point. Then, choose the stroke and fill settings for that shape. The bucket on the desktop is the Live Paint feature which does not exist on the iPad.
It's totally worth having notifications turned on for your channel Laura I'm really enjoying seeing how the new app works and I'm hoping to get myself an IPad sometime soon so I can have some fun using it the way you've demonstrated. I have a tablet, but not an IPad do you know if are they thinking of sharing this tech with android users too?
This is a great tutorial Laura, thanks so much! One problem I’m having is that if I am drawing smaller icons with the pencil tool, the start and end points connect. Do you know if there is a way to turn this off? Or is the best thing to increase the size of the icon, draw the lines, then scale down again? Thanks in advance, I’m really stumped, but also blocked as my drawings are quite delicate and small! ❤️
Definitely zoom in, so the distance between your endpoints is faster apart as you are closing shapes. In the desktop version there are more settings and tolerances you can control, but for now I don't see those kind of settings for the Pencil on the iPad - granted, these mobile apps get updated, so that may come in the future.
Great video, Laura. Your presentations are always top-notch. Your video always looks tack sharp. What kind of video camera do you use for overhead views?
Thanks! Not in the Pencil tool, but underneath it, you'll find the Blob Brush and it has pressure sensitivity controls. The pressure settings are at the bottom of the tool bar when you have the blob brush selected.
Very nice tutorial! One thing I can’t figure out... how do you stop drawing using the pen tool, without closing the figure? Like just drawing a single line. I guess it’s really easy, I just haven’t figured it out yet ☺️
For the Pen tool on the iPad it's like the desktop version, you either grab another tool to let go of the Pen, or you can use the touch shortcut. Just touch the center ring and then tap with your stylus/finger in an empty space to stop the line drawing. Release the touch shortcut and you are back to the Pen tool.
For the shaded edges of the ground and the sun: Is there an easier way than duplicating the object and create the edge out of the copy? If I want change the shape then, I have to change it for both main object and edge object. This happens quite often and is driving me crazy.
You could make the shadow object larger than the ground object and then use a copy of the ground object (placed on top) to make a clipping mask. That way, when you change the ground object, you would have to re-clip but you wouldn't have to change the shadow (if you made it large enough).
@@LauraCoyle Thanks for the answer! - But I finally found a much easier way, which I think is even intended. When you use an object as a clipping path, its fill and stroke are being deleted, but you can select it in the layer panel and give them their stroke and fill back! The easiest way to do this is copy the appearance before you create the layer mask, and then paste it back to the mask shape when you are done.
@@ddi7i4d I like the way you think! So yes this is kind of a ninja move you describe :-) You can compare this to Draw Inside mode on the desktop. Which is a feature that I've always thought kind of "breaks the rules" of Clipping masks, which is to have the masking shape on top. With Draw Inside, objects you draw in the mask stack up above the masking shape. The drawback is that on the artboard, you can't select the object on the solid fill of the masking shape, only by the path/edge of the mask shape - or by the mask contents. This has always frustrated me on the desktop, having to think how I have to select some things differently than others when I have a lot of objects in my art. At least on the iPad though, you have that common actions menu with the crosshair icon, you can click that to move the clip group around. I already use that all the time. I might start working your clip mask tip into my iPad work - thanks for the idea!
Yes, tap the 2 circles on the left hand side of the app under the tools to choose the stroke color and the fill color for any path you have selected. The red slash means none. Been busy lately, can't wait to get back to making more of these videos - you ask a good question!
Hi! How do you get the option for “no fill” again if you’ve chosen a color for both fill and stroke. I can’t seem to find an option to choose no fill with that red slash!
Do you have any videos on joing points/paths with the pen tool for the illustrator on the iPad? I am a CAD fashion designer and I make fashion flats. I like the idea of adobe on the iPad except I have not been able to find a video on connecting points. When I try to add color to my flats the points are not connected so my fashion flats are not fully colored and instead have the diagonal lines of colors since the points are not connected.
@@esmeraldaleal4911 To connect 2 existing end points it seems to be really tricky (depending on the points) because it's difficult to align them perfectly one on top of the other. Use Smart Guides to get as close as you can, dragging one over to the other, then you can marquee select the 2 endpoints with direct selection tool and use the Join command in the common actions bar (also in Path menu). If you wind up with tiny extra path segment between the 2 endpoints, select one and use Smart Delete - you have to zoom in and then sometimes convert the final point from corner to smooth, etc. not as simple as I'd like. Working on the video now ;-)
Thank you im excited for your video to come out. I'm more of a visual person so the video will so much handy. I appreciate your help. Honestly it's been a nightmare with it and haven't gotten anyone but you to respond.
Not in the app, but you can access your CC Libraries in the app. You can add Image traced/expanded objects to a library on the desktop, then go to the Image button in the menu on the left side of the iPad app, choose Libraries and get it there. Same thing with the Capture mobile app, you can add those "shapes" to a library and get them inside Illustrator on the iPad.
How do I lower the opacity of the fill before I start drawing with the pencil? when I click an object and change its opacity and stroke, the opacity doesn’t carry over to the next object that I draw, I need to be able to see through the current object that I’m drawing like to trace the object below it, but on the iPad I can’t seem to set the opacity before I start drawing with the pencil.
Unfortunately, this is how the iPad version works. You can change transparency after the fact, but you can't continuously draw with that setting. Please consider adding your vote and comment to this post on User Voice. illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/931888-illustrator-ipad-feature-requests/suggestions/44422002--remember-last-stroke-and-new-art-has-basic-appe Adobe prioritizes the feedback they get on User Voice with the most votes.
It depends on which tools you are using. If you are drawing with the Pencil tool, Blob brush, or Paintbrush, I think it's easier to draw on an iPad. If you are using the Pen tool, it's easier to use that with a mouse and desktop. I work back and forth between them, depending on what part of my project I'm working on. There are many more tools and features available on the desktop.
@@LauraCoyle I guess I'm confused. Whenever I use the blob brush, it doesn't let me select the inside. I can easily fill the inside with the pencil or any other brush, but not the blob brush
@@matthewtucker3248 When you draw with the blob brush the instant you lift your pen, a filled shape is created, in the shape of the paintstroke. Blob brush strokes of the same color merge into a blob as paint, so you could scribble a fill - see my video for a better explanation, it's a tool that behaves differently than other drawing tools in Illustrator: ua-cam.com/video/r9ifHVONTvA/v-deo.html
If you use Color Themes like from the Adobe Capture app, you can open them in the color panel in Illustrator on the iPad. Click the fill/stroke, go to the swatches at the bottom and choose Libraries.Choose the library you saved the themes in and select from there. In Capture you can use a photo or take a photo to create a color theme. Alternatively, you can place a photo in Illustrator and use the eyedropper in the color panel. Click plus to save it as a swatch in that document.
Is it possible to do some free form drawing? For some reason when I draw if I try to connect two things together it does this weird thing and starts erasing the other line ... I also am sometimes not able to erase things .. I’ll erase something and then it’ll come straight back or it’ll come back as an even weirder shape?
I can't picture the first problem you are having, but not being able to erase things with the eraser, I understand. This is the way paths (lines) work in Illustrator. To remove part of a path you have to cut it. Draw a squiggly line with the pencil tool, then get the Direct Selection tool, select an anchor point where you want to cut, and tap the scissor icon on the left of the common actions menu. This would be a great topic for a video - I'll add it to my list. If you try using the eraser, it closes the path, and can make more shapes. Eraser is better with closed shapes. See this video for demo in desktop Illustrator: ua-cam.com/video/vPRKzgTLANw/v-deo.html
The iPad version of Illustrator does not yet have effects, like drop shadows and feathering. You could draw them by hand and use transparency (also gradients) to make shadows.
You can place an image in an Illustrator document. Then, you can select it with the black arrow and choose the vectorize option on the left of the common actions bar. This traces the image, creating vector paths. To access the paths for editing tap Expand at the bottom of the properties panel.
@@Bullriich Oh silly me! I didn't understand. Yes, it's vector, and welcome to Illustrator!! All Illustrator's drawing tools create vector paths with anchor points. The Pencil tool automatically places the points along the path as you draw the line, and the Pen lets you click and place the points where you want them.

Does the Illustrator app allow for image tracing like the desktop version?
In your opinion, is it better to use illustrator from the computer or on ipad to create characters?
It depends on which tools you are using. If you are drawing with the Pencil tool, Blob brush, or Paintbrush, I think it's easier to draw on an iPad. If you are using the Pen tool, it's easier to use that with a mouse and desktop. I work back and forth between them, depending on what part of my project I'm working on. There are many more tools and features available on the desktop.
If I draw a shape with the Blob Brush, is there any way to fill it afterwards?
if you close the shape fully (like a circle) you can then get the Direct selection tool and select the inner path of the circle, then delete it.
Blob brush strokes of the same color merge into a blob as paint, so you could scribble a fill - see my video for a better explanation, it's a tool that behaves differently than other drawing tools in Illustrator: ua-cam.com/video/r9ifHVONTvA/v-deo.html
thankyou very enjoy
You are very welcome
How can i add other colours from another artwork like from gallery?
If you use Color Themes like from the Adobe Capture app, you can open them in the color panel in Illustrator on the iPad. Click the fill/stroke, go to the swatches at the bottom and choose Libraries.Choose the library you saved the themes in and select from there. In Capture you can use a photo or take a photo to create a color theme. Alternatively, you can place a photo in Illustrator and use the eyedropper in the color panel. Click plus to save it as a swatch in that document.
Excelente! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
CAN YOU CHANGE the font on the illustrator app on the ipad ???on whatever your drawing ???
Yes, select the text and use the font menu in the properties panel.
Nice 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
thanks
Happy to help
Hey Laura please I’m looking a pet portrait tutorial in IPad with Illustrator please do one 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Haven't done any pet portraits myself, but best of luck! You can do it!
Is it the apple pen 1st generation?
No, the one in this video is the newer one.
How do you add a point on a path?
Use the Pen tool, then click on the path to add the point.
How to add shadows ?
The iPad version of Illustrator does not yet have effects, like drop shadows and feathering. You could draw them by hand and use transparency (also gradients) to make shadows.
Is illustrator free to use on ipad like Adobe fresco?
It's free if you have a subscription to Illustrator - there's also a free trial for 30 days.
Is this ipad pro ??
Yes

Interesting, didn’t know there was an illustrator app.
It's brand new - released today at AdobeMAX, which is free to watch online: ua-cam.com/video/-VVGx47lNb8/v-deo.html
@@LauraCoyle thanks, attended several Adobe Max sessions today. So nice to have it virtual.
Hello
Can I convert an image into an .ai file?
You can place an image in an Illustrator document. Then, you can select it with the black arrow and choose the vectorize option on the left of the common actions bar. This traces the image, creating vector paths. To access the paths for editing tap Expand at the bottom of the properties panel.
Heey are the drawing lines vectorlines? Or pixellines😅
Heey! Is this a 'chicken and egg' question?
@@LauraCoyle 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ok its vector, sorry i'm complete new in this business🤦♂️😅
@@Bullriich Oh silly me! I didn't understand. Yes, it's vector, and welcome to Illustrator!! All Illustrator's drawing tools create vector paths with anchor points. The Pencil tool automatically places the points along the path as you draw the line, and the Pen lets you click and place the points where you want them.
@@LauraCoyle thank you very much.... i tryed it bevore on procreate, and it was pixelart. But i need vector graphics, so i want to ask you if this is 100% vector bevor i buy this abo from illustrator!
Have a good evening:) 🍀
That’s a big iPad...
yes, it's the larger one
Why would you ever use a pen tool if you have an iPad, Apple Pencil, and the pencil tool in Illustrator? Learning how to use the pen tool is a pain.
The Pen tool takes time to get the hang of, but it does some things the Pencil doesn't do precisely. But I agree that the Pencil tool + iPad and Apple Pencil goes a long way! 😎
@@LauraCoyle Thanks Laura for responding. I was frustrated with the pen tool at the time. I've cooled down and see that the pen tool is indeed more precise than the pencil tool.
