    Hi
I bought this engine second hand to replace a really clapped out BMC 1.5 in my narrow boat. Initially the engine ran OK but after a few long days cruising it began to burn engine oil seriously! I decided to do a top end strip down and found the valve stem seals were hard and brittle. I changed these and checked everything else which seemed in pretty good order. (continued)

Very useful and instructive, clear and simple. Thanks a lot !

Hi, Thanks for this video it's been really helpful in getting my narrowboat engine to run (bought a a pile of bits).
I've got a question about the timing tool you've got. Does the notch have any relation to the position of the double spline? ie does it follow the centre line or the leading or trailing edge? Do you knowanywhere that hires or sells the tool?
    Thanks in advance
    Rob

Hi there. Did you ever do a dynamic timing video in the end? I've got an issue in that I've advanced as far as the slots will allow, and it's only just starting to stop the smoke under load, but not completely. Done the usual, head off lapped in valves, all good there, had injectors reconditioned, check timing chain, all very good and no wear.. pump looks to be a reconditioned unit but from before my four years with the boat.any help would be very much appreciated as I'm stumped!

Tappets were reset after reassembly and running.
However I had traded my black smelly smoke for white diesel smoke. I was puzzled by this as I had not disturbed the injector pump in any way.
I got an “engine bloke” to look at it and he adjusted the injector pump while running until smoke was minimised (but not eliminated)
I have since renewed the injectors and fitted a re-con injector pump (Thornycroft)
None of these things has totally eliminated the problem to my satisfaction.
    continued

That is really why I am interested in how to properly set up and time the engine.

Sebastian. I have a situation with the timing out exactly 180 Deg. How do I correct this. I seem to be getting nowhere. The inlet is actually exhausting which is completely wrong. Can you help? Pete

Having nightmare with my BMC, runs nice but plums white smoke. Defo not steam because the smoke sits on the water

I have had a problem with my injector pump and had to get a 'new' (refitted) one instead.
I wonder whether with a 'new' (different) injection pump I can install it just looking for the 22° before TDC and the 5 o'clock position.
Any other adjustment before or after I hit the starter key?
    Thanks.

    Thanks

    Hi chap - it's simple - double notch to 5 o'clock position - it's that easy

Soon ...... very soon..... essentialy, turn pump one way till the diesel knock increases, then the other way till the exhaust tinges white, then set in the middle of the two

Ok, first things first, WHY are you timing this engine? evidently the pipes show it did once work fine at that timing setting, so whats changed?
To cut a long story short, the following things 'look like' poor timing and so need checking,
Incorrect tappet clearance, dry valve guides following a rebuild, a bad injector, a leak on an injector line, poorly calibrated injector pump.
Try valve guides first - remover cover and pour oil onto the valve springs with enough force to wet the valve stems.

Ha! Yes.......... I know what that is, try this. Pump out all the oil, put into a plastic oil bottle ( one gallon) the put the oil back in. FAST so fast it fills up the head / rocker cover with oil . I had this, and it was dry valve guides - the valves are only lubricated by mist - that helped me - I had terrible white smoke. ALTERNATIVES - tappets too tight / poorly seated valves. TO CONFIRM - compression test as is, then 1cc of oil in each cylinder, no change on compression = valve leak.
