    Genius. I remember just leaving the Atari XL Warhawk title run to listen to the great music.

    How I miss playing the old 8-bit games on my 800xl (and all the other Atari home computers I owned) The extirpator and Draconus were two of my most faves.

    Funny - it's hard to describe nostalgia to be people who didn't experience the same. The music from video games is so engrained in my childhood memories! I guess you just had to be there at the time! I wonder what the equivalent for our kids will be?

    Great music. I miss the thick filtering from the SID though :)
    Colors are much better on the Atari compared to the C64.

      I'd have to agree. I wouldn't say it's as clear cut for all pieces but I like in particular how snappy the pokey is. The C64 can sing of course as evidenced in Sanxion which doesn't sound entirely great on Atari other than it's excellent bass. A combination of that tight bass from the Atari and lead from C64 would be a great of course. Some stuff I wane of when it comes to a coarseness of certain C64 soundtracks but the Atari is similarly limited and sometimes grates in a different way. I was C64 guy but secretly wanted an Atari back then

      I love both sounds chips. The only "issue" I have with the Sid chip is that it was a synthesizer chip. The sounds/voices produced by it were ordinary . That end result was great though.
      The Pokey chip had a more "electronic metal".
      Now about the creators, Richard Munns was amazing in "creating" the best voices/organs on the pokey chip and Rob gave us amazing tunes by working on the Sid chip.

    SID is like a full synthesizer and less limited but POKEY has a real clarity you can't get with SID, they're just different, you really had to work to make music on the atari nothing was done for you so it was all in the programming.

    • @6581punk
      @6581punk Рік тому +1

      Read about the long hours culture and limited time the C64 was developed in. It's amazing anything worked. The SID was never meant to be a three voice chip, what it ended up being was a last minute salvage of what worked. If it worked as Bob Yannes intended it would have been capable of 32 voices.

      @@6581punk yeah it could of been so much more, even the atari had tech they never released like the speech synthesis and advanced sound chips.
      I never understood why the c64 wasn't given a better colour pallette too.
      Still love what we have tho!

    Jet Set Willy, phenomenal music (my favourite by far of all the versions) but the game was god awful on the Atari. Luckily someone did a Mod of it and got something akin to a monochrome Spectrum version but with that wonderful music so it just plays better. Sadly its 128K only but if you have the capacity and can find it and don't have it already its worth tracking down.

      The percussive bits usually sound better on the Atari, C64 has nice saws, sines and filtering but atari has more clarity. I like both the same but different.

    • @adroharv9213
      @adroharv9213 3 роки тому +3

      @@NickSBailey yeah I've grown quite fond of the crisp punch from Atari. The extra channel too can only be seen as a plus. Both have advantages as you say. I must confess to finding C64 music a little rough on the ears these days for some stuff. The very best tends to still sound excellent thanks to the tunes themselves of course
      It's great we can enter back into these fine times at any point and relive these moments
