The protests on the college campuses are a result of a more educated citizenry in the U.S. regarding the history of Israel and the plight of the Palestinians . Previous generations were subjected to a different version of what happened there and what is happening. Knowledge brings about transition which often results in conflict among those who have learned differently and perceive things through a different lens versus others who have set beliefs which are based on contrary information. Hoover's questions are shaped by previously held and strongly protected versions of the tragic history of what is now the expanding nation of Israel and the occupied territories.
Wonderful interview. When I hear criticisms of the founding fathers, I remember that though they were not Gods, they appear to me as giants compared to today’s midgets. As for their unpardonable sins of being men and women of their time. I am reminded of Angela Merkel’s apt phrase, I love my country with a broken heart. God bless America.
Marc Fogle, 65’ white male teacher, is serving 13 years hard labor in Russia for possession of marijuana to treat a fractured back. His life obviously matters less.
This is a very important topic to me, so "thank you" for the poignant interview. That we all have to think alike, the perspective so prominent in the world today, is really causing all kinds of problems. BTW, I think Margret Hoover is an excellent interviewer. I appreciate that she asks a question and let the person you're interviewing actual provide the answer.
The Age of Grievance and the abundance of victimhood seems to have a lot to do with overly protected children, Fragile young adults presently. Johnathan Haidt also helps here, as these college protests don't make much sense otherwise. Politicians on the Right are talented at relating to the passionate and ignorant; those on the Left still make too many assumptions, and speak in a manner that suggests a thesaurus in a back pocket. The next election may turn on the Left's ability to connect to all of the non-experts out there.
I really wish that every show didn't have to feature a flash back to the original Firing Line. It's a new show, new host it should be able to stand on it's own. Fox news is one of the biggest grievance manufacturers and mostly all in service of another great grievance manufacturer trump. I didn't see the Britney Griner thing as being racist, I saw it as an American arrested on fabricated charges and no different than Paul Whelan.
Americans we must rise to the great task remaining before us, that from our honorable, admittedly imperfect roots we take increased devotion to that cause for which generations of patriots have given the last true measure of devotion. Freedom. Equality. Justice. And all we need do is VOTE for humble leaders guided by divine principles that We the Majority can agree on, like truth, hope, unity, tolerance, empathy, fair taxation, gun control, fully body rights, ending drug choice enforcement aka the war of drugs aka the big lie…fueling the cannabis trades…
(note: recordings of "Firing Line with Margaret Hoover" involving content similar to this one and much more (for several minutes more than this recording) could be accessible through various sites from which such a recordings could be described as having had been "podcasts")
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “In the future, the state of Israel has to control the entire area from the river to the sea.” He added that the conflict has been about the existence of a Jewish state, not the lack of a Palestinian one.
Some of these "kids" (some of the college students at Columbia and elsewhere), are actually chanting "We Are Hamas." American college students chanting in support of Hamas indicates a serious problem. The problem is, indeed, the adults-- the college professors who taught their students that terrorist groups such as Hamas are worthy of support.
We need more pragmatic voices like Frank Bruni to call out all the nonsense and encourage people to educate themselves in issues as well as allowing themselves to listen to other viewpoints without judgement. I think American colleges and universities missed an opportunity to encourage students who took sides in the Israel/Gaza conflict to come together and learn more about the history. It is also not helpful when Jewish students had chants like "from the river to the sea" shouted at them and causing such a contentious and hostile environment. Hindsight is 20/20, but the schools should have never allowed students to set up encampments on campus. The students who were arrested should be made to collectively pay for the damage they caused to property as well as for the costs to remove the encampments. Insurance companies and schools should not be required to pay for the actions of some misguided students. Sadly, after all the disturbance, was even one Palestinian saved from death or starvation?
@@sirdiealot53 56. I am trying to figure out the reason someone would foment this protest. It might be to display liberals as unhinged or to elect a preferred candidate. Whatever it was, it almost certainly worked splendidly.
Another excellent interview. Thank you Firing Line.
Frank Bruni really understands the underlying cause of grievances.

An excellent and enlightening interview.Thank you both.

Excellent
Maybe it's just me but Margaret Hoover seems to be shouting at times - otherwise great show !

He was detained in 2021.
thanks Firing Line for continued service to full discussion of important issues, not just J School's current issue dejure
But some Israelis also say 'From the river to the sea." In fact some of them are in Netanyahu's cabinet!

Thanks for this interview.
So a bunch of finger wagging at the left...and the usual handwaving of issues on the right...
Typical.
This is an educational opportunity for the students. I don’t think that the lesson on diverse perspectives is the one being learned.
The same tools and methods used to promote victimhood could also bring about harmony, but harmony isn’t very useful.
Good on PBS for having Frank Bruni on Firing Line

you lost me with the "both sides" bullshit,...sorry..it ain't...silly child.

College campuses again. Kids rhese days! And that music!
It's the adults who are the problem, and the kids know it.

Kids breaking into buildings is not a problem? Hmmm, I’d say it’s those kids who are the problem and the adults know it.

I am concerned that the protest might be intentionally fomented. This didn’t happen for the Iraq war.
Yes it did lmao. How old are you?

I’m sure that was said about our protesting the Vietnam war as well.
