I spent half my childhood sitting on spoil piles watching these machines work. The first time I saw a hydraulic unit, about ‘62, I thought it looked totally naked! I never realized until recently, watching these vids that the buckets were not articulated back then.

@sneezabonk This is at the Brownsville PA National Pike show. This machine is still in the original owner's family.

Purely from an aesthetic point-of-view, I think Bucyrus-Erie shovels and cranes were the " Rolls-Royce" of excavators. They made their competitors look outdated.

In fact, that's correct. From users, in their size range, they really were the best.

The clutch levers operate backwards from the 22B's that I ran. He's pushing to engage the clutches and puling to disengage, I remember it the other way around.

Generally, Bucyrus-Erie was push to engage. Holdover from non-assisted controls where you wanted to brace against the seat back and get a good shove on the levers. A 22B I am familiar with is push to engage, maybe yours was newer.
BTW, several machines such as Northwest and old Lorain had a pedal cast into the crowd lever, so you could use your foot to help push.

The one thing that is obvious from watching the video is the fact that this man keeps the wrong hand constantly on the wrong leaver. When you run a backhoe or a shovel, dragline, or clamshell, you always kept your hand on the swing clutch, and operated the other two handles with your free hand. Bucyrus, Koehring, Lorain, were left hand swing, Northwest was right hand swing. By keeping your hand on the swing leaver the motion of the machine had a much better flow. It made your control of the bucket much more accurate as you went through the digging cycle. One comment was about a pedal built into the crowd lever on Northwest and Lorain machines. Northwest had such a peddle but that was on the swing brake, you could put the brake on with your foot or by hand.

You look up the names of these outfits painted on the side of old equipment and there's always an obituary from 2000 or 2001 or something that says the guy owned an excavating company and was a proud member of the international union of operating engineers for like 70 years
