Update 4/14/24 : On ESPN Sunday baseball, Profar said he misunderstood the situation.
Profar believes the Dodgers were trying to throw at him in the middle of (at the time) Gavin Stone's perfect game. It might be that Profar was trying to get Stone out of his pitching rhythm. Stone got out of that inning with no damage. It was Will Smith's "irrelevant" quote at the end of the game that had me 😆

He is pretty irrelevant. His .321 average is in 56 ABS. His last full season was .243 with the Padres in '22 and they didn't extend him because he really was pretty irrelevant. Dude had a 109 OPS+ which is decent but historically he's been pretty terrible. 83 OPS+ in '21, 81 OPS+ in '23 combined between the Padres and the Rockies. He didn't even even do good with the ROCKIES. He's just not a great player overall. Career 93 OPS+, career -33 run value, career -24 OAA, and career -8 DRS. How you can look at his 12 YEAR tenure in the MLB and say that a 56 AB sample size and somehow justify that as a positive is baffling.

Also, if we're using small sample sizes, Smith is hitting .371 in 8 more ABs. Same RBIs, same runs, 1 less homer. If looking at larger samples like a logical person might, Profar has 5.2 bWAR in 12 years. Smith has 15.2 in under 6. Smith owns a 126 career OPS+ in an incredibly taxing position. The man has room to call him out. In less than half the time that Profar has played, Smith has very nearly TRIPLED his value.
@@hexginnkgo So far he is still batting .319 with a nice 6 homers (he had only 9 in total last year!) with a .900 ops. Granted, it is only May 13 as of now, but Will Smith has worse stats than him as of now. Profar is 91st percentile in xBA and 79th in xwOBA, along with above average stats in just about every single critical category. Will smith is doing good as well, being 77th percentile in xwOBA and 82th percentile in xBA, and they are both doing well, so I would say Profar isn't too irrelevant as of now. Will smith on the other hand has pretty much always been a pretty good catcher throughout his career, but he isn't considered "relevant" either with a .262 BA (Yes I know profar's is .241). But if he wasn't on the dodgers, I doubt he'd be as popular and relevant.

Currently Profar has the highest batting average on the Padres as well as a batting average higher than 70% of the Dodgers lineup. Meanwhile, Will Smith hit the ball once in the entire series. Smith is irrelevant.

Profar has been HBP 50 times in his Major League career. 12* of those last year alone. Maybe he's just tired of pitchers hitting him; and to him that pitch was a bit too close for his comfort.
*I edited this post; I just reread his stats; I'm on my phone; he played for 3 teams last year, the column I read his HBP was smooshed together and I read it wrong. He got hit 12 times last year.
