Between rocks and streams: a unique experience on the Val del Rì Via Ferrata.
Geographic Location
The Val del Rì Via Ferrata is located in Mezzolombardo, in the lush Piana Rotaliana, north of Trento. This route, inaugurated in summer 2024, follows the narrow Val del Rì gorge, traversed by the Rio Fai stream that descends from the Fai della Paganella plateau. Along the canyon ascent, the natural environment and views offer a captivating blend of clear waters, moss-covered rocks, and airy passages.
Hike
This ferrata is modern and well-equipped, featuring a variety of Tibetan bridges, ladders, and footholds to facilitate the ascent along the valley’s steepest sections. The route winds along waterfalls, gorges, and natural recesses, making the experience exciting but not overly exposed. Although moderately difficult, it’s recommended for experienced hikers.
Take caution with wet, slippery sections: the high humidity in the gorge keeps mosses and roots slick, making suitable equipment and attention essential in muddy stretches. Some passages require considerable arm strength, particularly near the third Tibetan bridge, which is located close to the stream.
Accessible year-round, the ferrata takes about half a day to complete, making it ideal for a leisurely hike.
The route concludes on a flat area where you can take a break at the meeting point of the Gruppo Micologico Rotaliano, equipped with a fountain, fireplace, and picnic tables.
This new ferrata offers a unique opportunity to safely explore the Val del Rì and immerse oneself in a naturally beautiful and diverse setting.
A special mention goes to the impressive suspension bridge that connects the cemetery to the nearby locality of Toreséla. At 130 meters long, it is one of the longest structures in Italy and provides a splendid view of Mezzolombardo’s center.
ITINERARY
From the cemetery (267 m), follow the “Suspension Bridge” sign. After the bridge, you’ll reach Toreséla (290 m). Take the path to the right, passing under the bridge, descending slightly to reach the stream. Cross the stream to reach the ferrata start (285 m). Along the route, you’ll cross four Tibetan bridges. After the fourth bridge, there’s a junction. To the left is an escape route back to the starting point; to the right, you complete the ferrata and ascend to the picnic point (624 m). Return via trail 602B.
