In the UK infant car seats you are supposed to wiggle the baby down towards the buckle (known as nappy to buckle) that may be why you're not getting a great fit. The straps over the hips are just right too as you dont want them on their tummy too much

what is weird is in the us you want babys butt to be in the curve of the carseat and the crotch buckle as far back due to us having movable crotch buckles. i never knew it was different in other countries i knew care seat laws were different but not what u just said thank you for sharing this info
