A few things - I’m like 95% sure the first Worlds video will be up next Sunday, but I don’t want to say that definitively until it’s completely finished and uploaded. But stay tuned! I went through the captions and made sure they were accurate to what we were saying, so that is available if you wanted to turn them on. And we switched puzzles between the flipping race and then the real race, because Alejandro knew his older copy was missing a piece. The new one was completely fine out of the box. I'm not sure if that was confusing or not.
Take your time!! We know it's a lot of footage for you to edit. As a viewer who has need captions, I appreciate you taking the time to work on the captions!
Aside from not tapping/pressing, Alejandro has some other efficient techniques: Flipping: He brings clumps closer, flipping from furthest in that clump first. He stacks multiple edge pieces in his right hand, before transferring them to the edge pile near himself, (to the right). If you stack in your left, perhaps make your edge pile near you to the left. Flip multiple pieces when possible. Puzzling: His pile is in a smaller area. He gathers multiple pieces in each hand when gathering a section. He utilizes his left hand as much as possible, in both gathering and placing. Even the last pieces, he will have a piece in each hand. He is not ambidextrous, he has just practiced with alternate hands. Both: His hands are only flat to spread, and otherwise always curved ready to pinch the next piece. He didn't stop to push his hair back, (or drop pieces lol). Minimise repeated movements, get your left hand placing, tie your hair back, and beat him 🧩
@@cindiadkins9510 I don’t know if I’d say that. If you see her other competition videos, she makes it a point to highlight and praise who did well regardless of how she fared. It’s just that she tends to be a bit hypercritical of herself and open about it, which is to be expected at this level and given her status as a content creator. But you all may have a point about whether she gets too caught up in her anxiety at times.
Oh Karen, thank you for letting us be a guest at your puzzle meet-up. Not only such a wonderful portrait of him, along with this preview at the end it is just wonderful story telling and without a doubt the perfect kick-off to the greatest series of world's recap yet! Just getting so hyped!
The elevator music you found to play while you were catching up is next-level creativity. People notice things like that but they don't know how much work is sometimes necessary to find just the right melody.
Hi Karen! as an spanish person, im really greatful that you did this colab with Alejandro. I´ve been following you since 2020 when I didn´t have any idea of english, your videos helped me a lot learning your language and knowing that you´re now in Spain to World´s is great. Never stop doing what you are doing!!
What a great guy! There is one thing I noticed, especially in the time lapse, was that Alejandro is able to organize his workflow in a way that he is most of the time working in a very small area with only very short necessary movements of his hands. In this way he has less "airtime" while moving than you, Karen, in this direkt comparison and thinking about the number of movements I think that brings him also some seconds advantage. I am looking forward to the videos of the championship, have a great time!
With the flipping, Karen starts at the far side, leaning over the pile further, and works down. That means you don’t know how much room you will need to finish, and might overestimate and then spend more time reaching. Alejandro starts near himself and moves away, so when he’s done with pieces he has used the minimum amount of table space and won’t be as tired bending/reaching over. And won’t have to readjust flipped pieces if he guessed wrong about the space required.
Alejandro is so cute! the only puzzle content i watch is from your channel so i hope he did well at the worlds 24'. looking forward to that video tonight!
I found it fascinating watching the different placement techniques. As Karen mentions, Alejandro puts the pieces in and moves on to the next - and he’s using both hands. Karen puts a piece in its place and then each time presses it again and moves on to the next piece. I also really liked Alejandro’s puzzles. The striped chevron design looked like it would be a very satisfying puzzle to do. Both designs are really interesting. Thanks so much for sharing your visit with Alejandro. 🙂
I find it funny that I do puzzles for the complete opposite reason as you guys.. I like taking lots of time doing a puzzle because it's way more satisfying for me to do it that way lol. But, holy crap Alejandro is so fast!!!
My favorite part of watching puzzling (and puzzling) is the methodology and technique of each individual - such a fascinating study of how people process...❤
I am here in comments to appreciate video production! I enjoy so much the video quality, witty comments, mindful captions, music reference, thoughtful questions, hats off! Bravo Karen! Looking forward to the competition gig, the preview is amazing ♥️♥️♥️
I think I could have highlighted it more in the video, but I also think part of the key to speed puzzling is doing puzzles all the time, not for speed but just for fun, which he said is most of the puzzling he does. It helps you build that muscle memory, so then in a competition, you’re doing the same thing, except faster.
@KarenPuzzles That's great advice. I will soon participate in a local speed puzzling competition. I am in no means a speed puzzler however! 😅 But I'll just go for the experience. Love your videos by the way!
Loved watching you both puzzle together - you're so cute together! Thank you Alejandro for having us in your home and Karen, I laughed every, single time the elevator music came on - brilliant! 😂😂
This was a lot of fun to watch! If you don't mind, one thing that I've noticed while watching you compete in these competitions is that you start out very quickly, going neck and neck with all the fastest puzzlers out there. As you get about halfway through, though, your competition seems to catch up and then (a few) pass you by. It might be interesting if you reviewed some of your past videos where you're filming your entire puzzle and calculate your pieces-per-minute (PPM) for the 1st 100 pieces, the 2nd 100 pieces, etc. Then, you could compare your totals with those of other speed puzzlers using these same measurements to see where the very fastest are moving ahead. (This may be WAY too nerdy, though. If so, I apologize!)
Yes, that's what I mean about losing steam partway through, especially after I finish easy sections and move on to the harder sections. It's definitely something I could look into more in the future.
Omg you two are so cute together ❤ Also, the teaser at the end 😂 So excited - even though I almost watched the whole competition live and know all the results 😅 But I am looking forward to your analyses and background infos 🤓

Ten out of ten stars, thank you so much for sharing, loved and devoured it! ❤ Now I want to do the Eiffeltower puzzle for breakfast. 😊
The way he puzzles reminds me of speedrunning videogames. You can't stop for a second, every millisecond counts so you find ways to move faster and take shortcuts, you can't make mistakes because that loses you time. Alejandro must have practiced non-stop during lockdowns.
I’m currently midway through watching the English-language livestreams. Later I’ll watch the Spanish-language ones too. This video is a nice little teaser for your own championship videos to come.
Karen and Alejandro would be an interesting pair for the next world jigsaw puzzle championship or any competition in general. Hopefully, they will get a chance to be partners 😊
I feel like I need to be practicing based off him! I’ve been so focused on learning your techniques just to get better at speed puzzling but wow. It would be awesome to see how much faster you go when you utilize some of his techniques
I’m definitely a pile maker when I puzzle, especially when I have puzzles that have more distinct sections. I’ll literally sort them into their piles, then do a bunch of mini puzzles until they’re all connected. Might not always be the fastest but makes it so much more satisfying for me in the moment
Great video Karen. So kind of Alejandro to invite you to his house. Fun to watch the different puzzle strategies. He is a puzzle champion, but dont underestimate your own puzzle skills Karen. Looking forward to the next video.
Fun video! I hope you had a great time in Barcelona! It's a very fun city! I don't know if you had time to do some touristing (since it was before Worlds) but I hope you could visit the Sagrada Familia! I visited a few years ago and it was absolutely stunning inside!
We didn’t get to go inside, but the outside was beautiful! I’m planning to do a full travel vlog on Patreon about everything we did in Spain outside of the competition.
Looking forward to seeing your experience with Worlds, I’ve chosen not to watch the event this year so that it’s more exciting to find out how you did.
Wow, Alejandro flips twice as fast as me (it takes me ~5 minutes to flip a 500 piece)! And he does the rest faster than twice as fast as me. 😂 I need to practice! It's great seeing the close ups of him puzzling so we could see his technique, thank you! He is very good at picking out pieces for the areas he's working on.
I’m sure it was stressful having Alejandro watch you but I bet it was stressful for him too seeing where all the pieces needed to go and having to bite his tongue! ;-)
8:36 I want to point out that the difference between the timers is 0:07 seconds.... that's truly impressively close.... :v Amazing video, thanks Karen. :D Huge hug from Ecuador.
Great to see this, you're both sweet and skillful! A well-lit room too, perfect for puzzling. The only change I'd make is a black background for the puzzle instead of white. I wonder if such a change would affect Alejandro's speed?
I was sick during the 2024 world puzzle competition so I stayed home and watched every live broadcast every day and I know the results, but I'm still so excited to see Karen's recap! Also, I ADORE Alejandro I was rooting for him! ******SPOILER WARNING***** I'm sad he didn't win individuals again, but I'm happy for Kristin, too.
Awesome video. I'm lucky if I can do a 500 piece in under 3 hours. Which is about how long it took me to do the Paris Postcard two weeks ago. Wonderful puzzle. Same with London and New York.
The first video from the World Jigsaw Puzzle Championships 2024 is up now! Watch here: ua-cam.com/video/I6lrG7X7Fs0/v-deo.html

Karen starts faster, but her methods are slower as she goes. Alejandro sets up more slowly, but his methods move faster.

I’m sure it was stressful having Alejandro watch you but I bet it was stressful for him too seeing where all the pieces needed to go and having to bite his tongue! ;-)
my mind is likely in the gutter so going to keep my thoughts to myself n say i hope u had a lovely time!! LOL
8:36 I want to point out that the difference between the timers is 0:07 seconds.... that's truly impressively close.... :v
Amazing video, thanks Karen. :D Huge hug from Ecuador.
Saw you at CA2024 last week. My 6yo and I finished 54mins after you! He is amazed at your speed 🤯 but he said “maybe we’ll come in 2nd” 😊
Great to see this, you're both sweet and skillful! A well-lit room too, perfect for puzzling. The only change I'd make is a black background for the puzzle instead of white. I wonder if such a change would affect Alejandro's speed?
Alejandro is your "nemesis" 😅😂😂
Oh wait! This was before the competition? I think that would just add to my stress!
I was hoping I could pick up some last minute tips 😂 Or at least some last minute practice just in case I got this puzzle.
Thanks for the video - brilliant!
Don't want to be 'that guy', but you guys look good together lol
Alejandro seems like such a nice guy ☺️
I was sick during the 2024 world puzzle competition so I stayed home and watched every live broadcast every day and I know the results, but I'm still so excited to see Karen's recap! Also, I ADORE Alejandro I was rooting for him! ******SPOILER WARNING*****
I'm sad he didn't win individuals again, but I'm happy for Kristin, too.
they would make a beautiful couple 😳
Awesome video.
I'm lucky if I can do a 500 piece in under 3 hours. Which is about how long it took me to do the Paris Postcard two weeks ago. Wonderful puzzle. Same with London and New York.
I really enjoyed this. It's obvious that Karen had fun making this video.
That was fantastic. Next stop Norway? :)
