@@GeminiMoto maybe try opening up your swin a bit more, last week when i went to play i started a par 4 with the wood and sent it to the green, tbh that has easily been one of my best shots ever lol
After 25 years of golfing without fairway woods, I have just been fitted for a new full set. Sim TM. I've had the clubs for 4 weeks so I have only played 10 rounds but this video has transformed my game from 185 yards upwards. I am hoping I can now get below 18 consistently. At 67, I should still have a few good years to maintain some distance. I will let you know. Now to try your drill on drawing irons!!!....
As always I appreciate your detailed explanation. I’ve struggled as a “sweeper” who leans back, trying to help the ball into the air on the fairways. Your explanation of the 3W’s club-head design and the various changes to the lofting has helped me to better understand what’s going on, and I’m sure this will enable me to mentally visualize and correct the reasons that I’m topping the ball on the fairways. At best I’ve been drilling low rug-burners, and at worst the ball tends to just flips a few yards. Been trying to correct this key weakness in my longer fairway drives using the 3-wood. Hoping this will help reduce my strokes on the fairways and shorten my approach shots. It’s been a struggle for a couple years now, and I can’t wait to apply this advice to try to figure this shot out and get closer to par or at least a consistent bogey golf game. Thanks again!
I've not been playing quite as long as you but suffer terribly from the same problems you've mentioned. I just got a new 3 wood this week hoping it would help, and it has when I do all the things Chris just mentioned. I would add that, for me at least, it's essential to keep my leading arm straight on the way up but especially on the way down and finishing the shot makes all the difference. I'm looking forward to checking out Chris's stance. Today, although I hit some cracker shots at the driving range, I, like you was topping way too many. I hope this wonderful advice will help us both top fewer balls and bring us a little more consistency through a better understanding
The more videos I see of yours the more I really really need to book a 1 to 1 lesson with you!! Everything you say is easy to understand and an endless conveyer belt of knowledge!! 👍🏻👌🏻
Love all your lessons. This one had the best impact on my game. The smallest divot after the ball has made my 3 wood the longest and straightest club in my bag. Thanx Chris!!
This is a great video Chris, good job! A little tip for those who struggle to end their shots with their belt buckle and chest at target is to push the chest down towards the ball on downswing as this ensures rotation of hips, improves strike and removes slice. The old saying 'keep your head down' is actually 'keep your chest down' and is part of the reason why Chris' technique is so amazing to watch.
Chris thank you! one lesson and now I love all my 3 woods. Took a chance on corse and no more 6 iron for long shots. Been golfing 3 months and your lessons have helped so much my husband is proud to have me on course with him Thank you so much
The explanation at the beginning made a lot of sense. More detail than most videos. Well done. I'll try to stop sweeping so much and hit the middle of the clubface. Lots of practice since ditching the driver.
All I had to do was watch this man's golf swing and he immediately he got my attention. His concept of hitting a fairway wood (or any club for that matter) off the turf is spot on. For years I was a sweeper.Tried to help the ball get airborne with a little flip of the hands. Was a little anal about taking divots with the long clubs off the fairway - "WRONG". Hit down and create backspin, that is how the ball gets in the air.
There was a time I couldn't hit a 3 Wood well to save my life. Along comes the Ping G 400 and G410 series and this gave me a chance. I have learned how to hit the 5 Wood extremely well in the G 410 SFT series and I went to Golfers Warehouse to see if its possible If I could now hit the 3 Wood in the same series. I find I can now hit both the regular and the SFT versions in the Ping line. Woods are a huge weapon for me now. I carry a 3,5,7 and 9 Wood in the bag. All Ping. There are many makes of 3 Woods and I cannot stress enough how important it is to have the right one for you.
You covered exACTLY what I've been doing wrong w/ the 3w!!! Can't wait to get out and try the new setup and swing! Thanks for yet another SUPER lesson!!
I watched this a year ago but I'm glad I came back and watched it again. I really need to move the ball back a bit in my stance and try to strike higher on the clubface. Thanks Chris.
Thanks forthe explanation on the ball face. I will be working on that today. I play on a muni course with little grass here in Florida. I think this will help me on the hardpan in lifting the ball. I have become a terrific worm-burner hitter, firing with lots of roll but really want to get lift. Thanks again
Very helpful. I did try it to get a divot and it works for me. It 's better than trying for slide on top the grass. But as usual use full force, follow through and end in style. Good advice.
will have to try this negative attack angle and taking a divot with fairway woods technique. I usually sweep the ball with fairway woods. also great info on the construction of fairway woods. must have knowledge for all new golfers.
My 3 wood is the worst club in my bag, I noticed I do a lot of the bad things you say in this video so hopefully I can make some improvements. Thanks Chris
I like the idea of trying to contact the ball high on the face. I never thought about the face being "rolled" from top to bottom. Now I can hit stress free 3 woods!
this is the best video i've seen on hitting 3-wood on the approach. club face description was unique and very informative when tying together swing pattern and stance. nice job Chris!
Thanks for the video Chris. We have been told for so long to hit your woods like your driver and I tend to top mine. This technique could help me quite a bit I think. I was positioning the ball at my lead heel just like my driver. I'm going to try this next weekend when I go out. Thanks again.
Excellent job Chris on explaining "bulge" on FW club face! Also, learned what causes low shots with the fairway woods. Ball position is definitely important and something that I am aware of when hitting these clubs. I think my main problem is moving through the ball properly. Good Job!
Wow...who knew??? I've been struggling with my 3 wood specifically because I have been hitting the ball with the bottom of the club face, never knowing that I may have better results using the middle to upper sections of the club face. Heading to the range now for validation. Thanks.
just what i needed as a reminder :) had been overswinging and thinning balls all evening on the rage. - too far forward and leaning back, you got it :D
My 3-wood is my best club (after my utility wedges and putter) and I pretty well follow these tips (I don't worry about my finishing position, I make sure my hands go thru the ball to towards the target to counteract my outside-in swing). I think using it on-course a lot more helps build confidence in it. My home courses require only four 3-woods a round so when I feel I need to practice it, I just leave my driver in the truck and move up a tee box.
@@jpapp288 I think he means there are only four opportunities to hit a 3 wood off the tee, meaning the other long holes "require" driver. I had to read it twice, too.
Ok. I really need this shot, as do all golfers! Hopefully, this is my year. One thing for sure, if I don't hit it well it won't be for lack of knowing how! Great lesson!
Chris - enjoyed this tutorial. I struggle hitting 3, 5, and 20degree hybrid off the fairway. I will go back to the range tomorrow to try to execute the descending strike with ball position just above middle to front heel.
Driver trouble so i starting hitting my 3 wood off the mat at the range which is going as far as my driver so now I'm making better contact when on the fairway & hitting clubs i can hit to put me in better position, pay attention to grip & alignment, i love to see the ball fly high but struggle with that. But having fun is most important.
Thanks for the tips - have been struggling with this club for a while and rarely hit on the course it as results not pretty. A lot more confident after viewing this as it really describes my issues and how to fix them. excited to get out there and try it on the 29th March
Great tutorial Chris, have stopped using my 3 wood(user error), shall take this one the range, cheers. Posted on earlier lesson, backswing faults, should have mentioned i'm a high handicap swayer,, more to work on. Lots to go at during lockdown
Hi Chris, I was out playing at my local club I was using my driver but very inconsistent so I changed to the 3 wood and my drive was much better and hitting the fairways from the tee. So I'm hoping to get out today and leave the driver at home.
I watched this video a few days ago; I went to the range, nothing but tops and low hangers. I re-watched the video yesterday; I Went to the range and hit proper 3 wood shots of the mat for the first time in my life. Thanks, bro

Thanks Chris. My 15° 3 wood has become one of my favorite clubs after figuring out that an attack angle of 1° down with a low point about one inch ahead of the ball produces a beautiful flight.
Great advice and something I will work on. I have a very good game coming on - but always stuck with distance between a 4 Iron to driver as I cannot hit the 3W. It seems I have the ball too far forward which could be the start of my problems.
Something i found out works for me is to instead of looking at the ball, look to the grass right in front of it, that really helped me
I 2nd this when it comes to irons and wedges. Hasn't worked for my wood yet tho
