American Rangers vs. British Highlanders : The Battle Of Harlem Heights

- The Continental Army under the command of General George Washington suffered a series of crushing defeats during the summer of 1776. The ecstasy of July’s Declaration of Independence signing, with all the pomp and circumstance of a King George statue being beheaded turned into the agony of August as 400 British warships from New York Harbor began to deliver boatloads of British and Hessian Soldiers upon Long Island.
Washington’s forces would be nearly annihilated at the Battle of Brooklyn and thanks to a miraculous maritime escape, live to fight another day. But the follow up assault from General Howe two weeks later at Kip’s Bay had thoroughly embarrassed the American militia with an unrepentant rout of patriot forces.
Now once again blessed by the tepid movements of General Howe, the Americans evade British forces from trapping them in lower Manhattan, pushing north along the Hudson River to Harlem Heights.
It is here in Harlem that Washington will face down an imposing force of British Highlanders of the fame Black Watch, and the 42nd Regiment of Foot. Washington must increase his tactical game, and his New England Ranger’s are the perfect group to execute the American Generals daring battlefield scheme.
The Americans may be downtroden, fatigued and famished but if they can steel themselves for the quickly approaching fight, they may not only survive the battle, they may for the first time in this young war call themselves victorious.

Does anyone else here appreciate the irony in that we are exploring the birth of the republic when in current reality, at the same time, it is working overtime destroying itself? Curious.

If you go outside and look with your own eyes on America we’re doing pretty good. The news finds pockets of strife and drops them all in your lap making it seem like it’s all falling apart

Brutalizing and killing surrendering opponents simply hurts your own cause by ensuring a) your opponents will be extremely likely to fight to, and now when cornered the next time instead of surrendering and b) radicalizing your opponents.

He avoided death and capture when put in precarious circumstances innumerable times.
The most agnostic of historians will cite divine providence as a highly probable explanation for Washington's many lives.

Have you heard the story of the angel that visited him at Valley Forge? She gave him 3 perils that would happen upon America.The first was the war between a mother and her child (American Revolution), the second was the fight between brothers (civil war) and the 2 fights between great and powerful nations (2 world wars), and the third was our current time. Unfortunately this was told by George Washingtons close friend, years after Washington died. He said George Washington didn't want people to think he was insane and lose faith in him so he asked his friend not to tell it to anyone. But the fact that the man told us about it in the paper in the early 1800s, before the civil war and 2 world wars, tells me it's true. The angel also told him some other facts that came to fruition. She said the countries "across the waters" will be united (UK). She said America will separate from england and become its own country(Declaration of Independence). She also said we will become a republic, and the world will follow in our footsteps. The things spoken of our time is quite scary accurate.

Ironically enough the rangers were founded by the Highlander’s who would become American.
They were also the most hated because of the way they treated anyone who wasn't 100% behind them. It didn't matter what nationality or if civilians.

I love some american representations of their history. The americans lost about 30 killed, the British about 15. To characterise this as a "battle" between the "mighty British Empire" and the defiant rebels is at best amusing.

My 5th great grandfather, Colonel Jacob Blackwell, was in those battles. He lived on Blackwell Island, later Hog Island and Roosevelt Island. Do you know anything about him?
I can't believe the armies stood in groups in brightly coloured jackets and were expected to stand so close to each other and shoot it out for hours.

It irks me that the Scottish were forcibly exiled, during the 'clearances', only to serve as Britain's attack dogs in the colonies. My surname arrived here centuries ago, as a result of the 'clearances'.

Weird tours of rotation is terrible for an army, deployments like in Vietnam and Iraq Afghanistan was the same problem of the early American army. Stay in and fight till the war is over keeps veterans in your ranks.

How insane to think the grounds of Harlem and Brooklyn once saw the glory of Washington's army and The British Royal Army and navy and what these places have grown to represent today sickens me.
Its the British Army not "Royal", the army was under the control of parliament not the crown.

Look, if the British had wanted to leave a world war against the French they would have defeated the usurpers. As it was, the first civil war was won due to the British winning a world war. Which ended in the creation of a country that has done the bidding of the British even since.
