I lived on the Jersey Shore. I worked as a ride operator on the iconic roller coaster that the ocean swallowed. We didn’t evacuate, we lost power and had candles on in the house. We lived across the street from a large bay. I noticed the street getting flooded, but at first I thought it was from the rain. Within minutes, the water was rapidly increasing and up to our garage. My dad was at work, so I had to evacuate my mom and dogs in my SUV upland to my aunts house. When we arrived, we weren’t sure if we blew out the candles. So I decided to go back to check, and by the time I got back, the water was up to the door handles of the SUV. I got to the house and the candles were out. And I managed to swim my way back to the SUV, and drive the thing back to my aunts. Didn’t even realize how dangerous what I did was. I have no idea how I didn’t lose control of the vehicle. It was a 1999 Chevy Blazer. Thing was a beast. I remember people in my neighborhood that were stranded in their homes had to be evacuated by boat. I’ll never forget the post-apocalyptic nature of October 30 before the water fully receded. It was like from a movie, down power lines in the flooded streets, debris everywhere. I wish I got footage, but alas I didn’t.

I live in Maine, several states North of Jersey (for people who don’t know).
That’s insane, especially with the storm surge and riptide. That could have carried you out into the ocean more than a stall (which can happen in rain), or worse.
My mom drove us home one night in a whiteout. The blizzard hit early and we were stranded at the mall. You couldn’t see two feet in front of you and we drove a tank of a station wagon.
Only thing that kept us on the road was a semi truck brake lights and the breakdown lane rumble strip that warned us that we were off the street. It was a freaking miracle.

I remember Superstorm Sandy. It took years to recover from it. The subway system had to go through reconstruction because of Sandy's Storm Surge Flooding. Even 7 months after Sandy, there was sand all over the streets in Coney Island. Sandy was New York and New Jersey's Katrina. The aftermath was chaos that lasted for weeks. Born and lived in New York City now currently living in Nebraska.

I live in the Bronx, and the subway was up and running down to 34th St, then you had to deal with busses to go further downtown. By the next day, it was running normally. Did lose our house on the Jersey shore though, and it took years (shitty builders) to complete rebuilding. Although the house we have now is 3 times as big as the original.

My dad had a crash-pad apartment in the city that he used whenever he had to stay over for business. My family stayed there when Sandy hit and stayed through that Saturday. My house in Central Jersey was fine. A few downed trees on the property, but no damage to the house. But the neighborhood was like a war zone. Damn near impossible to navigate and I don't think anyone other than those who had generators had power for two weeks. Sandy hit on a Tuesday. We didn't get power back until the following Friday night. Was the second year in a row where Halloween was canceled because of bad weather.
The previous year in the Northeast a rare October snow storm hit and knocked out power for about a week. If it had come in December I don't think it would've done anywhere near as much damage as it did.

I remember losing power for 10 or so days when sandy hit. We had to cook on the wood stove and my mother had to get rid of a large amount of ham we had in the fridge before it went bad. So she cooked it all up with some eggs and chopped up potatoes and threw it on the fire. We called it hurricane hash and it became a staple for our household years after.

I was in undergrad when Sandy happened. At the beginning of one of my meteorology classes the professor would do a rundown of any notable systems happening, I remember her mentioning Sandy and how nothing was gonna come of it because of the Bermuda High. It was probably on or around this date 4:22. The next time we had class the forecast had changed radically and idk if people in my class had emailed her about it or what but she sounded kinda embarrassed about getting it wrong. We talked about Sandy a lot for the rest of the semester, probably once a class in some capacity or another. I remember her mentioning that certain storms were goldmines for graduate theses/dissertations and Sandy was one of them.

I lost my grandmother 7 years ago, she was like my mother since my own biological one was never very attentive. I am the way I am because of her, so what you said about your grandfather really hit close to home especially since I made a promise like that myself. I promised her that one day, I would go to college and I would make a name for myself in some field. I likely won't be able to meet my goal of that on account of some mental disabilities, but you already have a damn strong start on yours.

Sort of just the opposite here- I have a house in breezy point and Irene was so hyped that we packed up the whole house and schlepped it in 1000 green shopping bags to Manhattan -when we returned post, Irene then the water didn’t come that far only up to the stoop - so when they started hyping Sandy, so many people in breezy including us were not considering evacuating- my husband who is usually the first to evacuate because he has a heart condition said we’re not doing that again and he wanted to stay but ultimately, and thankfully we decided to err on the side of caution and evacuated -The rest is history- never in my wildest dreams, would I ever have imagined the army camped on our beach in tents- devastation unimaginable and the stories of my neighbors, who stayed so harrowing but thanks be to God, everyone survived

I was very young when Sandy hit. I lived on the North side Long Island for my early childhood. I had experienced Irene. I remember sitting outside in the backyard of my house, with my grandfather who was a construction worker doing work on the house to prepare for Irene. I remember the power being out for 3 days, my grandfather using a generator, and me playing a Strawberry Shortcake CD game on my bulky ass windows 7 laptop. I also remember part of our fence getting destroyed by Irene, and my cat got out of the house and nearly escaped because of it.
I was also really into hurrcianes and weather as a young child. It was my speical interest at the time.
We also had gotten a orange tabby cat named Sandy in 2008. So when we found out a hurricane was gonna be named Sandy, me and my family were like "Oh that's so cool! A future hurricane named after our cat!" This was YEARS pior as well.
But here's the funny thing, me and my parents left New York to move to Texas in mid September 2012. I was 8, almost 9. I remember watching the TV late at night to see the updates on Sandy. And then we went from excitment to horror because Sandy was gonna hit New York.
Keep in mind, we had also just left our entire family behind there. So we had to worry about them. We left JUST before Sandy hit, which I think is both a crazy coincidence and just kinda funny in a sad way. The fact that we had a cat named Sandy kinda made it stranger in a way. But, even now as an 18, almost 19 year old, I never really understood the full impact of Sandy until I watched this. All I really knew about my family's experience was that my aunt, uncle, and two cousins had to go into their basement for a tornado warning, and that their trampoline blew away in the storm.
It' was also kinda hard for me to watch this, as that cat I had named Sandy passed away on April 12th 2022. I miss him so much.
Otherwise, even though I never got to experience the wrath of Sandy by chance, this video really helped me understand everything more and get a grip on why Sandy was so bad.
Side note: In July 2016 I left Texas to move to Tennessee, and I just so happened to miss Hurricane Harvey by about a year. I guess I just have really good luck with hurricanes outside of Irene???

Damn...did not think I'd be crying at a superstorm video...
Today, October 8th, is the anniversary of me losing my gramma to various cancers that had rapidly grown without anyone knowing until she collapsed. She was the kindest, most loving person I can think of, and she would spend so much time with me and my brother, having a genuine interest in things I liked and my writing. She kept a piece of art I made for her, framed in her bed room for her to look at and see my signature on it and the heart I put. My last moments with her she told me "no crying" bc she knew. Having gone through this I can relate to the pain you're feeling. I really treasure the night I skipped class to spend time with her in her hospital room, discussing books.
I'm so glad that you had these memories though. Having the moments of sitting together, talking, laughing, crying, it makes the pain easier eventually. Because you know, even as things were nearing the end, he never lost a moment to tell you he was proud of you and he loved you. Means you never have to waste time doubting. And one thing that I genuinely love about content creation is now...that memory is cemented here. When the memories are most fresh, most raw, and when things get rough, you can return to it just for a small reminder.
I'm so sorry for your loss. But never doubt that any time you get the surge of adrenaline to push through a project or having the urge to finish something, it's likely just him reminding you to stick to something you're clearly passionate, and insanely talented, at.

What an awesome documentary! My grandparents had a house in Toms River in 2012. Thankfully, they weren't in the area when Sandy hit. I just remember driving down there to assess the damage and seeing a huge wooden pier from the boardwalk in their backyard. There was also a small boat resting near the back deck. It's absolutely crazy how powerful that storm was.

On another note I am sorry for your loss. As someone who’s had a relative pass away due to cancer I know how it feels. It is a terrible disease that takes so many people, and watching them die is worse than the loss at times. I hope he is safe wherever he is. I’m sure you’ll make a damn good meteorologist in the future. Godspeed.

I actually used to live pretty close to the shore when Sandy struck, more specifically Lake Como. I remember in my old house, there were these stairs that led outside if you went straight, a bathroom and the laundry room if you went left, and the garage if you went right. Since the garage and bathroom were on the same floor as the bottom of the stairs, that meant that both got pretty flooded, even to the extent it nearly flooded into the kitchen.
Outside it was flooded out there as well, and I actually remember seeing a canoe outside that usually would be near the lake.
And then I went missing for about thirty minutes because my dumbass decided to climb into the canoe because I wanted to be in said canoe.
We ended up losing some stuff due to water damage, including a Pokémon card collection (which had some real good ones in there). To make matters worse, the heating system was downstairs near the garage as well, and that was damaged to the extent we had to stay with family for a while.

I was a kindergartener during Hurricane Sandy in NJ. I remember I didn’t have power for week or so following the hurricane. We were hiding in our basement because it was the only place in the house without any big windows that could shatter. It was a scary time, especially with an infant brother. To cheer us up, our school did our Halloween parade once school opened again. It really did help show our community’s togetherness following this tragedy.

Great video. It’s wild to see the breadth of Sandy’s affects on an international level.
I live in Rockaway Beach, Queens NY and Sandy still deeply defines our community. Every single basement flooded, cars gone, beach front houses literally ripped in two. Schools closed for months - I finished 5th grade at IS 93 in Ridgewood, 45 scared kids packed into every classroom. The Riis Beach parking lot filled with dozens of mountains of debris, each dozens of feet tall. Fish, mud, and oil littered the streets for weeks.
You can tell which houses burned or flooded the worst during Sandy by how they were rebuilt - the foundations had to be raised at least 10 feet off the ground. Even now, twelve years later, the Rockaway branch of the A train is closed one weekend a month for Sandy-related repairs.
Living through Sandy helped make me who I am today. Thank you for keeping the story alive.

I can’t believe Sandy was ten years ago, it was such an amazing storm. While only a Category 1, it’s insanely low pressure (that of a Cat 4), huge size, unusual track making that left hand turn, colliding with a winter storm from the west, and it’s extratropical transition making landfall at high tide on a full moon, just an incredible cyclone. Sandy caused nearly 82 billion in damage making it the fourth most destructive storm in history in the US, it knocked power to 8.5 million, destroyed 650,000 homes, hurricane force winds extending more than 200 miles, TS force winds extending over 900 miles, and its storm surge, up to 15 feet in some spots. And because a tropical cyclone colliding with the arctic jet stream, record snow in West Virginia and record waves on the Great Lakes. New York and New Jersey were devastated the most, dozens died, flooding subway tunnels, streets, ripping houses from their foundations, throwing cars around like toys. Just incredible. The iconic Jersey Shore boardwalk was ripped to shreds. I lived through Sandy, I was thankful to be away from the coast but Sandy wasn’t just a Hurricane, nor did it just have the characteristics of a Nor’easter, yes scientifically it was a Post Tropical Cyclone with hurricane force winds at landfall, but it was more than that, it was a Superstorm.

I was in middle school when Sandy hit my town. We got home from a wedding the night before. We found that my (at the time) Aunt and Uncle had tied down our patio table, removed the table's ceramic tiles, and tied down our lawn and patio chairs. My parents thought they were being a little ridiculous with the prep but we were tired and didn't care. I have no doubt in my mind that if they hadn't tied down that furniture, it would have found its way into our kitchen and we would have been in deep shit. After the storm, an oak tree that had been growing long before we had been there was pulled out of the ground and was only being held up by the power lines. That storm was insane.

Im from the Northern edge of NY, and was in middle school when Sandy hit, all i can remember is that its the storm that broke my illusion that the Northeast doesn't get hurricanes, and that it really F-ed Up long island & greater NYC.
I'm used to our weather being generally fine with the only natural disasters being Blizzards & Icestorms, which really aren't that bad with a modicum of preparation and common sense.
I think much of the northeast shared my wakeup call that Hurricanes can reach the Northeast as more than a typical rain storm and deal some damage. I know NYC changed a bunch if its building codes to account for storm surge flooding, like moving electrical rooms out of the basement and onto the second floor. Also they tried (and failed) to waterproof the subway.

I don't know who's idea was it in the schoolboard to have us come in that day. I was a bit scared but me and my family evacuated up north just in case. I don't remember the damage as I was still young but watching this, already has me trying to dig up what happened since it's been 10 years. I think the whole thing regarding weather psychology is really interesting. As someone from Oklahoma, I know a lot of people who don't really take tornado warnings very seriously. I can't even lie, sometimes I don't even take them as seriously as I should. I'm from the Norman area and just recently I almost didn't take shelter when the tornado warning went off for my area. I decided last minute to go ahead and take shelter and I'm glad I did because an EF2 tornado was not even half a mile away from where I was at. A lot of people don't think that something as crazy a strong tornado or a powerful hurricane can happen to them until it actually does, and sometimes it can be too late by then.

Love your videos. Sandy was truly a nightmare. My ex’s family was from Long Beach Island and they did not evacuate. A lot of the islanders prefer to ride it out at home so that they can attempt to minimize damage. They had to be evacuated by the coast guard after days of being underwater with no power. Flooding is common on LBI but the sea and the bay don’t often meet. The footage captured by his mom was terrifying. It was bad where we lived on the mainland too. My ex’s family couldn’t return home for months and there was extensive damage and their house is on stilts. But the NJ shore took a beating that it still hasn’t recovered from.

YESSS! I've been waiting for you to do this one! My state (CT) got slammed by this storm. I've lived through so many 'once in a lifetime' storms at this point, that phrase has me questioning it's usage by the media lmao. The '93 storm, 2011 Oct Snowpocalyse, followed directly a year later in 2012 by Superstorm Sandy, and now Isaias in 2020, which crippled a lot of CT for almost two weeks in some remote areas. But Sandy... I'll never forget the storm surge- it was unlike anything I've ever seen. Milford & Westport were under double digit feet of water in some places & honestly we STILL are seeing the effects of the damage it did to our beaches & waterfront areas to this day. Thank you so much for covering this storm, you're doing great work & I know your grandfather would be proud of you!

Superstorm Sandy was just one of the craziest storms ever. As a current West Virginia native, the wind speed, cold air masses and snow were an awe to experience. But the damage that arrived wasn't fun. The entire Tri-State area were still rebuilding after that derecho and when all that wind and snow hit, I tell you. Going to school wasn't fun! Roads were icy, sidewalks untraversable and the 4 inches of snow. All those snowplows and salt trucks being used early certainly made the winter season feel like we were smack dab in the middle of the arctic circle! I really hope I don't see another superstorm like Sandy again in my lifetime. And I'm deeply sorry for your loss of your grandfather as well.

Your comment about the Jersey Shore never being the same after Sandy is so true. Before it happened, there used to be seashells galore, and the entire beach was shaped differently. Ever since then, there have been no seashells, sandbars along the shore have been completely wiped out, and the shoreline became smaller. The water’s deeper. It really is a crazy thing to think about. Every time I vacation at LBI, I think about it. I think about visiting Seaside Heights and seeing a large portion of the boardwalk just… gone. Homes leveled off their foundation. As of last august, some lots on LBI still remain empty, abandoned, or incomplete. I love the Jersey Shore. I’m always heartbroken when I think about how this storm impacted it. I believe a nature preserve at the end of one of the barrier islands was completely eaten away by Sandy and has never resurfaced. Other smaller, undeveloped islands in the bay disappeared too.

Your dedication to your grandfather moved me to tears. I hope you and your family are healing from this loss as time goes by. I too lost my grandfather relatively young and much of who I am today is who he was. He raised me up when my neglecting and abusive parents wouldn't, and even fought the state to try and get custody of me and my siblings. It truly moved me to see such a supportive and loving grandfather you had, and just how amazing and irreplaceable that grandfathers can be. I feel your pain and tho it never goes away completely, it does get better. Mine too had worn down to such a bad degree: for mine it was heartache that got him. My grandmother had only passed a few months prior and he just...wasted away. It was tragic and painful to see; he also couldn't talk or move much if at all in the end. But I know for a fact that your grandfather was proud and happy for you and can't wait to watch your continued growth and success through your life. Thank you for these amazing videos and for telling us about your amazing grandfather you dedicated this to.

I know of the pain that you’re talking about with your grandpa’s death. On June 2nd/21, I was watching my hubby out the kitchen window and he was laughing while talking to our neighbour and I thought, I sure do love you hubster!! It was 8 minutes later that my son is screaming something about Dad, so I ran down the stairs and outside (At this point I thought he cut himself with the law.) where a neighbour was doing CPR on my husband. My son and I took over until the paramedics came. They pronounced death a half hour later. From laughter to death was 37mins.
The pain of losing someone is devastating. It’s like these loved ones take half your heart with them. I’m still numb with the shock of how fast it was.
I just wanted to let you know, you’re not alone. Take care. ☺️
