The way Ed giggles when there's something fucked up on the page speaks to me coz I do the same.
I love these black and white reprints so much coz from an educational standpoint it's so easy to study how great all these artists are. Not just figure work but old cartoonists were a whole different level. A couple weeks ago I spent some time just marveling over a curved bannister Graham Ingels drew on the cover of Haunt of Fear 20. There was more care and craft in a bannister than a lot of modern comics have in an entire page... or whole issue for that matter. Just amazing stuff.
Would never say no to more EC coverage. Thanks guys!

Love the EC’s, so thank you for another great video. That Neal Adams cover you mentioned is a favorite of mine too. It was Batman # 227 if you want to look at it again. Part of what fascinates me about it is that the cover is a homage to Detective Comics # 31 by Bob Kane.

Did you guys know that one of Jack Kamen's sons (Dean Kamen) was the inventor of the Segway?! I don't know why, but I always found that fact unbelievable and amazing..

These 90s reprints are what got me into comics as a kid. All because of the show. They're still my favorite. Revolutionary for the early 50s

I really need to get my hands on some of these EC collections, or better yet, an Artist Edition or three lol They look stunning in Black & White!

It's always amazed me how much incredible art these guys managed to fit under such over encumbered dialogue.

The Artist Editions are really astounding; the EC crew worked twice up and it stills looks insanely detailed.

That type of knife throwing is a trick. You pocket the knife and the fake knives springs out of the target.

Ed nailed it. You read these stories and you think you know where they’re headed, and even if you’re right, it is delivered in a way more clever and dare I say - charming- way than you could’ve ever imagined. Amazing stuff.

I love all the classic EC artists, but it seems Evans is really underappreciated. Amazing art!

Agree! There was also Reed Crandall, Al Williamson, Frank Frazetta, Joe Orlando, Wally Wood... EC really made sure their readers cared about the artists.

Of the EC books, the horror titles were the ones that aged the least well for me. So many tales of domestic revenge/bad jokes in the middle era; by the time you get to the last year, Gaines and Feldstein were pretty well tapped out and they brought in other writers who reinvigorated the line at the end. EC was so successful that they set a pattern for horror comics that lasted into the present, but have you seen Four Color Fear, the collection of non-EC horror that Fantagraphics published? There's a whole spectrum of pre-code horror that runs the gamut from satire to metaphysical hallucinations. Occult creatures, visions of hell and Cronenberg-level body horror. The EC art is always worth study, but George Evans' work, for instance, is a lot more interesting in the off-brand comics he did at the same time.

Who was the crime comics artist that Frank Miller loved from EC again, you guys were talking about it recently?

Tales from the Crypt comics proved how a formula can be done well issue in and issue out. Not a single story in those issues falls below well executed.
