You're one of the few designers that actually talks so candidly about the business side of fashion. like you said designers love talking about the creative process, but having some of the business spelled out is encouraging. I decided I didn't want to focus purely on fashion design bc I don't want to deal with retail sales and runway shows every season, but knowing you can get straight to the design and business without those interferences and fluff is reassuring: wholesale definitely sounds like a viable option. even being a sales rep sounds fun! the face you made when you started talking about department store chargebacks😂😂😂 I could tell it was bringing back some memories of jump thru those hoops! ❤ from the deep "souf"!
Chargebacks are the worst!!! I remember whenever I would overhear the receptionist paging our in house sales person that a department store was on the phone, inevitably I'd hear her mutter curse words while running to the phone.
Thanks for the Video clip! Sorry for chiming in, I would love your thoughts. Have you thought about - Panaylee Renowned Prepotence (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great exclusive guide for finding luxury or designer goods at wholesale or lower prices minus the headache. Ive heard some super things about it and my coo-worker after a lifetime of fighting got great success with it.
Appreciate Video clip! Excuse me for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you researched - Panaylee Renowned Prepotence (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great exclusive product for finding luxury or designer goods at wholesale or lower prices minus the normal expense. Ive heard some decent things about it and my mate got excellent results with it.
I’m honestly just so appreciative of what you do for you subscribers/viewers including me because not many people are willingly offering their knowledge on retail and the fashion industry to help those who could use it. I’m so glad you’re generous enough to do so. I love & appreciate each and every video.
i love love love, did i say love your Chanel. like many im sure, i started out in highschool with visions of glamorous runway shows and parties floating around in my brain with dollar signs in my eyes.....i never made it to design school (long story short, life got in the way).....but now im 37, and the roads life led me down have dissolved those pie in sky grandiose dreams and replaced them with a practical maturity i needed if i was ever going to be successful, so to watch an industry insider talk so candidly about both the creative and especially the nitty gritty nuts and bolts of the business side, which noone ever anywhere talks about.....is such a blessing towards finally getting this dream started. thank you to the moon and back
You give the most great advice, I will use it to follow my dream as I continue my past to move on to a new level. thanks you for sharing your advice and your art work 😄
Hey Zoe, just wanted to mention that I have worked as a showrep even though I honestly never enjoyed it. It was part of my school curriculum, but it allowed me to experience the business side in fashion. It was so bad that I started becoming anxious and stressed bc the showroom I was interning for carried 6 different lines with like 70+ garments in each line and we had to memorize sales date, turn around, code #, prints, best sellers, describe the item to the buyer, present the line in a particular fashion, etc. and the worst part was dealing with snobby clients or having the owner of the showroom breathing behind your back to make sure you fulfilled their expectations.. I didn't really consider myself ideal for the job, but I was offered a job to my surprise a few weeks from interning with them lol and even worked at the WWIN show in Vegas. At the end of it all, I was able to break that timid/shyness side of me when I was put out there, so I guess all that stress paid off somehow bc I got to experience a small glimpse of what it's like to be a showrep. Long story short, I left the job and went back to visit just recently. i was asked to work and attend WWIN show in Vegas this February, but i kindly rejected the offer as I'm mainly into fashion design/ pattern making/ and looking into having my own line someday and could definitely use some of those showrep skills I've learned throughout the way. At this point in time, i'm trying to improve my pattern making skills/sewing/ my overall confidence, but more thn anything learn as much as possible from people in the industry. I feel like people like myself that don't have the money to pay a designer/pattern maker/ sample maker, etc it is crucial to understand and be able to do these things on your own in order to make it in this industry. In all honesty, I've learned a lot more from you and your videos, without the need to intern my time for free in order to be given some helpful info/insight in fashion... so I'd like to give you a big THANK YOU & a virtual hug for that. For every video I watch on your channel, my confidence/knowledge has been growing more & more to the extent that I feel closer thn ever to reaching my dreams on having my own line someday soon. Btw sorry for the super long paragraph lol, just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you! :)
Hey starting this FB group for fashion businesses and designers let me know what you think. facebook.com/groups/825049074550395/?multi_permalinks=825066437881992¬if_id=1533681539364551¬if_t=feedback_reaction_generic
I'm going to start my own line in the new year; I make stagewear for myself and everyone asks where I buy it, so I figure I'll make it available for them too. I'm learning a lot from your channel, thanks! :)
You are the real deal, that part about buyers not caring about ethnic stuff sealed it for me... it's true, the other day I saw in my country how the "sharks" of crap sales started selling indigenous vegetal fiber hats with a nasty sticker in the front and a lousy synthetic cord to hold it to your head and branded it as "sombrero playero": they didn't even bother on giving any credit to the indigenous people that trade with these hats (they produce lots and lots of stuff but no one cares).
Zoe, thank you for this informative and realistic video. Im a designer for 10 years branching out start my own fashion line/company. I look forward to watching more of your videos! 👏🏽
I would love to see a video from you talking about the different kinds of industrial sewing machines and how to know which one to choose as well as pros and cons of getting one!
It's really a great video. you can never find any channel who teach this kind of subject in details beside here. go zoe go! *lowkey seeing those ads now 😏😏😏
I really appreciate you getting to the point and making the information palatable. We are in the early stages of design but have already gotten some attention from big stores due to us showing some samples online. I need to watch a couple more of your vids so I can do my best not to be caught of guard. Thanks! P.S. your cute😉
Make sure to check my Fashion Industry playlist to watch my videos on direct to consumer retail and private label. Good luck on your line! Let me know when you launch, I'm always looking for cool rash guards to wear when snorkeling.
lol wow ... rashguards!! i *just* found out that the brand I had been building out as a sideline gig Tribal Surf (surfer social network) was trademarked by some lame importer that sells through Walmart and Amazon Merch just slapping the name on ... wait for it ... rashguards!! bahaha. so ALREADY i am having hurdles to deal with. ive since come up with a new, clean name and pushing forth. and yes, i saw the consumer retail but did not see the private label one - will look now. thanks again Zoe!!! and will def post here when i launch!!
Wow, this channel, all this information, Zoe, THANK YOU! Thanks a million! I feel like I am in a class with a very tough no-nonsense teacher who says it like it is, which is somewhat scary, (but even scarier would be the result of going out there, and trying to make it without knowing all this information!) I'm learning so much, it's not even funny! Thank you for taking the time to produce all these extremely valuable content! Such an amazing channel. Thanks million!
>>no-nonsense teacher who says it like it is, which is somewhat scary, (but even scarier would be the result of going out there, and trying to make it without knowing all this information!) This is pretty much my teaching philosophy! Good luck out there!
Your the best, I watch your videos over a few times and look up things that I don't know much about- sometimes in your other videos- thank you for all the help. 😗
Zoe!! i love this. Is there a video where you talk about branding, trade marking logos and all that? if not, do you mind sharing some info about that process please
I watch every day your tutorials and it gives me lots of knowledge to practice in my future carrier because you touch every tiny little thing and describe it marvelously. I planned to become a freelance fashion designer. So I would like to know what kind of qualifications needs to become a freelance fashion designer as well as how would I join to engage with the projects of fashion designing
¨Negative fucks.¨ 🤣 Thank you so much for sharing the knowledge that yoúve gained though your experiences as I take a deep dive into design with my floaties on. I just so happen to work with a little old lady who does amazing embroidery…but in 🇲🇽 so extra funny!
what kind of business is forever 21 they have stuff that is real cheap how can they make a profit like that...outsourcing production to 3 world countries and using generic lower level priced textiles?
Hi Zoe! first of all I'd like to thank you for your tutorials and dedication - I've been following you for a few weeks and I've learned a lot so far! I wanted to ask you whether I'm just not finding the second option of "How to sell your fashion line", or is it not yet online? I also wanted to tell you that I'm waaay over 20, so not all your students are so young ;). Greetings from Venezuela!
hello zoe, thank you for being there for all of us in this industry where it can feel lonely sometimes (: so, I have a question... can you have multiple lines of collections under the same brand name, like capsule collections that are not related to the same inspiration?
Since working with wholesalers is such a tough business for small designers, would it be a good idea to still take advantage of this option by having a small/capsule collection? So that way the contract is temporary, the exposure is still there and both parties will still be selling a lot of merchandise. Is that a real option with department stores? Just came across your channel yesterday and instantly subscribed! love your videos and how informative and in-depth you are! Have a great one! x
Typically, a sales contract is only good for one collection so the size of the collection doesn't matter in that regard. And buyers don't buy whole collections. They pick whatever pieces they want and in different quantities per SKU. There are other reasons to keep collections small when first starting.
fashion-incubator.com. I don't know of any books. Almost everything I talked about in this video is from working in the industry and shop talk with colleagues.

How can I find these sales reps that work on commission 🤔
what kind of business is forever 21 they have stuff that is real cheap how can they make a profit like that...outsourcing production to 3 world countries and using generic lower level priced textiles?
Lol. Such great advice, thanks so much, Zoe!
Thank you. You're amazing.
Hahaha.. your so rite about the designers telling stories... I'm dying... lmfao
Hi Zoe, thank you soo much for all your videos

Greetings to Venezuela! No, I haven't done part 2 yet, but it's definitely on the to-do list!
great!! looking forward to it!
hello zoe, thank you for being there for all of us in this industry where it can feel lonely sometimes (:
so, I have a question... can you have multiple lines of collections under the same brand name, like capsule collections that are not related to the same inspiration?
I'm pretty sure that is the first time in my entire life that i heard the concept "they give negative fucks" and im dying
Yeah, I made that up. Sometimes zero is not enough.
Since working with wholesalers is such a tough business for small designers, would it be a good idea to still take advantage of this option by having a small/capsule collection? So that way the contract is temporary, the exposure is still there and both parties will still be selling a lot of merchandise. Is that a real option with department stores?

Thank you 😊
Question: have you ever sold your clothing brand to stores or do you solely teach Fashion ?
I had my own line a long time ago.
New subbie thanks so much for sharing your dream! Peace
thanks so much for this
Journalists care, but buyers don't give a f*ck.. I can so see this scenario. Scatterbrains vs. bottom dollar bean-counters.
Amazing
Can we have a video on fashion forecasting pls?
Would you recommend wholesale to a collectors brand, if they only produce 25 of each design?
I do not recommend either way. I offer as much information as I can so you can make the decisions.
Zoe, I just discovered you!!! You are so cute!!!! and such a garmento!!!!
love your video
thanks!
Do you recommend any reading material for the business side of fashion?
fashion-incubator.com. I don't know of any books. Almost everything I talked about in this video is from working in the industry and shop talk with colleagues.
Thanks, I don't have formal schooling so I am learning as I go. I feel like I know my trade very well but the industry is new and so much different from the tech world where I cut my teeth.
+1
I love you and this close to proposing to you 👌
:D
do u mentor one on one ? Even thru email ?
How do i approach a departament store to sell my line?
Is wholesale the same as mass market?
No. Wholesales is a sales strategy. Mass market is a price point.
zoe, where is the part2? Seems to forget?
There is no part 2 yet.
❤
How do Pop up shops work.
You rent a retail space for a short time, set up shop, and run the store like you normally would, preferably with tons of marketing and events to get people in the door. You just need a place that will rent out for a short time.
@@zoehongteaches thank you
we want hidden buttonfly jeans! what happened to skinnyfit!?
Where's the direct to consumer vid?
It doesn't exist yet.
Just read this, would love to hear you talk about direct to consumer and trade show routes! 🙏
tbh I hate hearing about inspiration too.
hahahahahahaha~
i love you 🤣
I love your videos but they are too long need to shorten them.
Nobel Trolls you don't have to watch it all at once.
JESUS ALL THIS STARTS WITH A WHITE SHEET OF PAPER AND A PENCIL .
Hello Zoe...I really do like listening to your video... they are very informative... but your language is get very offensive... you ask for your viewer to be conscience of their comments ...but yet you use words not fitting for women of statue and education....
