kinda same here, just bought an bst alpha beast fake for 120 bucks cause sharp blades are not legal in my country and I want the best trainer I can get
I picked up a fake 42 at a gun show today. I was obvious handles were a plate design not a cast and it didn't have torque straw pins but it does have the balisong butterfly 42 engraved on it and the bench made us 440c on the opposite. Solid 20$ investment
I noticed the number 42 indicating the model under the butterfly logo on the real 42 is smaller font and further away from the butterfly image, somethings VERY consistent from the fake to, all the fakes I have seen so far has larger closer numbers...
It took you roughly 5 minutes to actually get into the comparison. 10/10 would waste 5 minutes of my life listening to some guy babble on about creativity again.
the fake ones actually are pretty good, I have one and it's amazing, flips very well, I think thanks to these guys making the fake bm 42 a lot of people can at least get pretty close to what it's like having a real one, besides the benchmade guys are kind of jerks for discontinuing what most of the flippers claim to be the best balisong ever made, and even if they start making them again, the price they ask for their knives is insane, so stop whining about the chinese making these clones, I think they're great balis, and what makes them even greater is that they are affordable for most people
Kenneth Kourt The value going up on a product due to supply and demand is theivery? So I guess when the price of gold went up that was theivery. Or when stocks increase in value that is as well? You really can't decipher between someone making a knock off product and something going up in value due to increased demand?
#knifezoid, do you really think that I'd give up on Benchmade, the name that made me love the knife, so easily? What knife have you owned that came close? Benchmade closed their doors to me. I found a way to get close again. So here's the real deal: Benchmade is not making the 42 EVER again. People want to charge me imaginary prices for a knife I owned. Will I pay super--reasonable prices for a near-match, after spending countless dollars buying shitty knives? YEAH. FUCK YEAH.
I just bought a t4 titanium bm42 fake. Still waiting on it, but I would like to say its stupid to be so anti-fake knives. People want the bm42, and benchmade could make them, but they don't. Instead they make shitty, heavy, overpriced new stainless steel models, that don't even have a spring latch. The fakes are SO similar. They flip almost identically, and are a tenth of the price. Fuck benchmade, (but fuck exiled cuterly too). I have no problem with the chinese fakes, and I don't think most people that want a good flipper for a good price do either.
+biteme I got mine off DhGate. flipped it as my main until I got my replicant, but when I did it was Hella nice.. came shaper then the REP... as in literally hair popping razor sharp. I loctited mine, tolerances were tight, flipped amazing, well worth the 80 I spent on it. love the sound of the Ti too. still flip it almost every day, not a single issue with it
theyre made out of cheap metal like he says in the video after a couple weeks theyll fall apart and usually the screws strip easily you would be buying a saftey hazard, just bad shit waiting to happen
Benchmade 42 handles are made of cast titanium and total weight of 4.1 oz(116.2 gm). Titanium is non magnetic, weighs around 40% less than steel. (geek specs: specific gravity Ti 4.5 gm/cc vs Fe 7.8 gm/cc) In other words the stainless steel fake will weigh more. Since the genuine handles are cast no milling marks, should you see milling marks around the holes then request a lower fake price. The color of Titanium tends to be darker grey vs the silvery bright stainless steel. You can see the subtle color difference at 7:01. Also the stainless steel fakes will be thinner to reduce weight. Hope this helps.
The main differences that I could see that weren't mentioned were: The tang pin on the real 42 looked smaller and neater, it seemed quite large in comparison on the fake. Also the grooves in the kicker of the fake were much deeper and more pronounced than in the real one. Lastly, the number 42 itself on the blade was much smaller, neater, and further from the logo on the real deal. With that being said, unfortunately, the 42 has been discontinued. This means that small changes to the design to throw off counterfeits will no longer occur and replicas will get even harder to distinguish as their design improves.
@Benjamin Huffman My videos usually require at least an attention span of 5 minutes. I know it's a lot to ask. BTW, you can fast forward youtube videos. Just FYI.
Well then bench made should star making the 42 again and people wont have to purposefully buy working 10 dollar fakes cause the real ones are still 400
I agree with alot of what you say however consider the following 1# chinese consider it to be an honor to be able to copy high quality items 2# its not hurting benchmade because benchmade stopped making the BM42 and they have stated they have no plans to make it again. so where there is a demand there is a market.

for me, the fake one was the best option, i live in Brazil and here an BM 42 cost aprox. R$1400 and i dont want and dont have this money to spent on a Knive.
***** The Benchmade 42 is not a $500 knife, it's a $170 knife that costs $500. I would never ever pay MORE than the retail price for a knife. That's why I'll never have a 42. I'd buy another 62 or 51, or an Alpha Beast or Replicant, or any other high quality balisong.

real quick, just for people who don't know and are here for learning purposes. the Benchmade 42 is actually cast, not milled. thats how they get a solid handle and are able to have the smaller holes along it, whereas the fake is drilled and why they hit the back of the divet. just a quick fact for you guys, and again it is CAST, NOT MILLED from a billet like the majority will say.
You're fine, get the cheap fake one, save your money. Most damages you can fix yourself, and if it breaks completely, just buy another one for 20 bucks... You can get 50 fake ones that would be good enough for a lifetime before you could ever get a real one.

clones would not be so prevelent if the origonals cost wasent so outrageous. There is not any where near 400$ worth of materals and machine work in those knives. Now if they were made out of aircraft grade Ti with a Titanium nitride coated blade or somthing similar it would be a different story.
not really when you think about how expensive the metals are and then the process that goes into making them all handmade or not they all have to be absolutley perfect and then of course a big company like that has a lot of overhead they need to pay off so its worth it. plus the markup on retail thing can be up to 75 percent so they are actually profiting not just breaking even. and the stores need to make money to
nsquezada27 thats the thing tho the metals are not that expencive they can be found in plenty of other quality knives of much lower cost. The machine work isint that complex infact its fairly basic. i realize that the company needs to make a proffit but unless they only are making a few hundred of these knives and have to recoup all of the tooling costs and such they shouldent be 300 / 400 dollar knives.
lmao I got one more video on the FU42 coming...a viewer sent me one of the originals which proves some things that were hidden on newer versions, let the drama begin once again, whatever right, its info, info is good...
I just bought a fake one for 11 dollars. Had no idea of the original price though. Also, I didn't know Benchmade was an actual company. The model name is A316 and I don't know if I should feel bad for spending 38 dollars in total for 3 fake knives.
Another noticeable difference between the real and fake is that titanium has a darker tone to the metal when polished. stainless steel is lighter. if u have a titanium ring or bracelet u can use that as a reference
The latch seat on the fake is a little thicker on the ends of it while the ends of the seat on the real o e are thinner. A lot of ppl possibly didn't notice that
Ehh good video but to be honest, it is about the money issue with em, a few hundred for a benchmade is complete bullshit to me, yeah nice knife but a few hundred bucks FOR A KNIFE? thats a bit much for me tbh, i do have a fake one, its cool and close to the real deal, cause i cant afford a nice real one at the moment, also forget the money, like me we have to buy fake ones cause in the UK theyre illegal other than the trainer, and i dont fancy buying the trainer benchmade for 280dollars
You're paying for the material it's s made of, the manufacturers, the time put into the knife, and the shipping/handling for the delivery, as well as the process itself. Knives are expensive tools. If you buy one, respect it. I could save your life.
People support local inustries. This industries keep the jobs in you country and keep your economy running! Imagine everything you buy comes from china, what do you think will happen to your community of unemployed people?
Melder92 Okay you don't listen, we can't if we want a 42 we can't have it so basically we're gonna buy it some where we can still got one no matter where it's from neither how it's made
I m not a very smart person, nor do I have any knowledge on knives what so ever. I was just interested in the video cause I saw a balisong in a movie and wanted to know more about it. Just passing a dumb question, would it be possible to tell apart a fake one from a real one by the magnetic properties of the metal used? (one being titanium and the other being cheaper mild steel as said in the video) Again just a dumb question, go easy on me guys.
Lots of theories but no solid answer. The most common one I heard is the mold and Tooling for the handles was running towards the end of life and they decided not to redo them. Manufacturering Tooling is very expensive.
This comment might be a bit late, but did you ever consider that benchmade doesn't produce 42's anymore? It wont hurt their business. Not to mention even if I had the money for a 42, where would I find one to buy?
How does that have anything to do with being a millennial? He wasn't necessarily wrong, you kinda did ramble a little in the beginning. Also, some people can't afford to pay over 500 dollars for the real thing, despite having jobs. Some people need to pay bills, or pay rent. That's the reason a lot of people buy fakes.
You asked about our experience with fakes, so here is mine. I'm from Krakow in Poland. It's touristic town and in the down-town I know the shop, that sells balisongs, shurikens, bongos and all kind of crazy stuff, of course as souvenirs and NOT as tools for doing "not-good" stuff. Half of butterflies there are fake Benchmade's. I don't know, how it is with you, but when I am holding a fake, I can just feel, that it's about to fall apart when I'll first use it. Also, the blade part of fake one is often moulded and grinded, not forged. However, these two are indeed really similar, as you said
Just watched your video and I can honestly say it helped. I work in a weapon shop and we deal with a lot of knives daily. we had have plenty knockoffs go through our store it happens. But the one seriously bad thing is we got a shipment of balisongs in I took it out of the box checked it over nothing looked off. went to flip it open and the handle I held snapped and sent the blade straight into my leg. can't tell you how upset I was.
The people commenting in support of clones don't seem to understand what it's like to have something they created stolen. Likely because those same people have never created something worth stealing in their life. (EDIT): The one question I have for people who support clones is, why does it need to be a near EXACT copy of the original? It's not like there is an end all be all perfect design so what is the point of making a clone other than to make a quick buck off of an already popular design?
Tim Bain that I couldn't answer, there's some speculation that the balisong was only popularized in the Philippines but was actually invented in France
Honestly I see what you mean and I get your point about ripping a product off. Some people may not have a budget to purchase an original knife (even the non discontinued models) for $300+ but want to have a cool looking/feeling knife. The design rip-off is ok for me as long as they don't steal the logo and claim to be them
Ye I understand, honestly though, I prefer balisongs like you showcased for Palethius much more than ones from benchmade. Sadly for me I live in the UK where it is illegal to import balisong knives so I'm gonna have to either get a training one or a comb =(
There is still a high demand for the BM42 design that Benchmade has unfortunately decided not to cater to. If they were still making them, I'd happily pay 200 or 300 for one. What I refuse to do is pay 400 or 500 for a second-hand one when you can get a brand new carbon copy for literally 5% of the price. It's practically the same knife for 5% of the cost. People will never stop buying fakes until Benchmade re-releases it.
I think the best way to prevent this kind of stuff is to order right off the manufacture website, or from some of the official distributors listed by the manufacture.
I honestly think if the people making the fake replicas would just come up with their own design and logo, the knives would be more respected. I bought one from dhgate, and it flips pretty well actually.
To me I've never even seen a henchmade 42 let alone held one. And I knew right away which one was fake. The logo isn't up to par (benchmade would never send a knife out with a logo looking like that) and the space between the handles on the fake one is V shaped. Benchmade makes everything to fit so it aligns perfectly. Those 2 things alone make it a dead give away
I don't really think it's my place to judge a person based off if they buy a knock off or not. I know people have strong opinions on it, but I won't make a personal attack on someone cause they do it. However, I advise people against it cause I do feel it supports the wrong side.
How long ago was this fake purchased ? That I am aware of there have been two batches of fakes. Your one appears to be from a new third batch. The latches of the first and second batches have a flat underside your one is domed on both sides. How is the tang pin ? Previous fakes have a very rough tang pin.
i got my first butterfly knife about 4 years ago when i was still in taiwan, got it for about 10 bucks. i believe it was made in china, only works for about 2 months. actually after about a week it had some very serious rattle problems and finish came off super fast. but that knife got me into the whole knife world. oh, and the lock on it did not work at all.
The logo is faded on every benchmade counterfeit I've come across, and there is always a more rigid indention from the blade going into the bottom of the blade piece.
To be honest, I don't mind fakes, as long as they're decent and aren't sold at full price; I think if someone can't afford to buy a real 42, buying a decent fake for 50-100$ is a good option, if they want to know "what it feels like" to use a 42 without spending over 300$.
You can just take a magnet to it. Titanium is magnetic but its really weak. The fake ones as he mention are steel so they will be hella magnetic. I don't know if they make titanium fakes nowadays.
I think now you should do a video about the fake titanium one and the real one. honestly I have owned a real BM 42 just because they are so hard to get even if you have money nowadays, but the fake titanium one that I owned is smooth as silk and not bad at all. I really want to hear from someone that have owned both telling me the difference between the two
At 9:13, the "42" under the butterfly, looks like it was stamped onto the fake, the numbers aren't aligned, and are much closer to the butterfly, than on the real one.

clones would not be so prevelent if the origonals cost wasent so outrageous. There is not any where near 400$ worth of materals and machine work in those knives. Now if they were made out of aircraft grade Ti with a Titanium nitride coated blade or somthing similar it would be a different story.
And if benchmade still even made the 42.
Shabbernigdo Xingjian but they make them in the U.S which really jacks up prices due to our much higher wAges
nsquezada27 true but even still the price on them seems outrageous unless they are all hand made.
not really when you think about how expensive the metals are and then the process that goes into making them all handmade or not they all have to be absolutley perfect and then of course a big company like that has a lot of overhead they need to pay off so its worth it. plus the markup on retail thing can be up to 75 percent so they are actually profiting not just breaking even. and the stores need to make money to
nsquezada27 thats the thing tho the metals are not that expencive they can be found in plenty of other quality knives of much lower cost. The machine work isint that complex infact its fairly basic. i realize that the company needs to make a proffit but unless they only are making a few hundred of these knives and have to recoup all of the tooling costs and such they shouldent be 300 / 400 dollar knives.
The fake might be heavier since it's steel and not ti. Though they are sandwich and thinner to help compensate the heavy weight
lmao I got one more video on the FU42 coming...a viewer sent me one of the originals which proves some things that were hidden on newer versions, let the drama begin once again, whatever right, its info, info is good...
I love how you said "the real one is thicker, it has a little more meat" lol
I wonder which is the fake one he never even says in the video
Left
it was a joke
I just bought a fake one for 11 dollars. Had no idea of the original price though. Also, I didn't know Benchmade was an actual company. The model name is A316 and I don't know if I should feel bad for spending 38 dollars in total for 3 fake knives.
i buy chinese fake now !!!
Why doesnt dhgate sell anymore butterfly knives?
Another noticeable difference between the real and fake is that titanium has a darker tone to the metal when polished. stainless steel is lighter. if u have a titanium ring or bracelet u can use that as a reference
After checking many websites i found:
Fake: 10$
Real: 50$-100$
Well I ain't gonna spend 5 times the price.
what 50$?
where is it for 50 bucks lol. i cant even find 1 for 800 bucks.
Hahahahhhahahhahahaha $100 your funny more like $400 - $600
the true's one cost around 250$, and the fake one costs 25$ in DhGate... its your decision xd
javi pulpillo I found one for 470 couple months ago, bought it love it :)
The latch seat on the fake is a little thicker on the ends of it while the ends of the seat on the real o e are thinner. A lot of ppl possibly didn't notice that
Cut the crap and get into the knife. Omfg
Ikr
i ordered a benchmade 62 im worried it might be a fake got it from blade hq is that good plz tell me!!!!!
BladeHQ is as legit as it gets
+Edwin Castorena its legit
I could save your life.
if I could buy something that would last me for an amount of time I would. seriously. but I cant so Im limited to rip offs. theyre ok. :s
Shadrik Easton He said it's machined from titanium. Assuming that's true, it should last longer than you.
***** The 42 is molded titanium. If I said machined I was wrong.
If you want a decent balisong on the cheap, just get a fake bm42. I got my fake back in high school in 2010. It’s still alive and kicking.
People support local inustries. This industries keep the jobs in you country and keep your economy running! Imagine everything you buy comes from china, what do you think will happen to your community of unemployed people?
Yeah support local industry by buying a dicontinued knife ?
Noox38
It was more like general speaking.
I know and i was kind of asking you a question about what should we do now ?
Noox38
In my opinion we should support our local industries as good as possible.
Melder92
Okay you don't listen, we can't if we want a 42 we can't have it so basically we're gonna buy it some where we can still got one no matter where it's from neither how it's made
I m not a very smart person, nor do I have any knowledge on knives what so ever. I was just interested in the video cause I saw a balisong in a movie and wanted to know more about it. Just passing a dumb question, would it be possible to tell apart a fake one from a real one by the magnetic properties of the metal used? (one being titanium and the other being cheaper mild steel as said in the video) Again just a dumb question, go easy on me guys.
jilles de lange they have a question don't answer if you don't have an answer.
NotSoBrown "Again just a dumb question, go easy on me guys."
I went easy on him. HEHE :D
I'm not to into knives either but i think that would be an interesting way to find out
god damn Chinese > _
so if the chinese can make these almost 1 to 1 copies for $20 why should people pay 15x the amount for the original....
If you're willing to pay 450 for a knife, you deserve to get ripped off.
Xd, ikr
This is a hobby for some people and even a job who are you to judge whether or not someone buy one of the best made knives in the world?
Wow, that was a great impression of a stupid person you did there
Why did BenchMade discontinue the original?
Lots of theories but no solid answer. The most common one I heard is the mold and Tooling for the handles was running towards the end of life and they decided not to redo them. Manufacturering Tooling is very expensive.
the fake one was alot brighter, too
This comment might be a bit late, but did you ever consider that benchmade doesn't produce 42's anymore? It wont hurt their business. Not to mention even if I had the money for a 42, where would I find one to buy?
u talk to much
Millenials...
Talking a lot in a video meant to inform people?
You don't say
Talk leeeesss
Logan Heath Listen more.
50 Blades of Grey truth
50 Blades of Grey probably to tell the original maker to fuck off and stop selling overpriced shit
bountY lol if that's what you think of the original maker why would would you even want something that resembles their product in the first place?
So butterfly knives originated in the USA? Or were they copied from the Phillipines? :)
Tim Bain that I couldn't answer, there's some speculation that the balisong was only popularized in the Philippines but was actually invented in France
Can we have a link to a real one?
You are right, they are very close in those regards. The fake is steel, but still flips fine. To me it's more of a moral issue. But to each their own.
Honestly I see what you mean and I get your point about ripping a product off. Some people may not have a budget to purchase an original knife (even the non discontinued models) for $300+ but want to have a cool looking/feeling knife. The design rip-off is ok for me as long as they don't steal the logo and claim to be them
+Liberal Gaming - Casually Hardcore Not for me but probably cause I"m a designer myself.
Ye I understand, honestly though, I prefer balisongs like you showcased for Palethius much more than ones from benchmade. Sadly for me I live in the UK where it is illegal to import balisong knives so I'm gonna have to either get a training one or a comb =(
I don't understand. If these are so similar, who cares if you bought a fake? It's practically still the same thing, right?
There is still a high demand for the BM42 design that Benchmade has unfortunately decided not to cater to. If they were still making them, I'd happily pay 200 or 300 for one. What I refuse to do is pay 400 or 500 for a second-hand one when you can get a brand new carbon copy for literally 5% of the price. It's practically the same knife for 5% of the cost. People will never stop buying fakes until Benchmade re-releases it.
I think the best way to prevent this kind of stuff is to order right off the manufacture website, or from some of the official distributors listed by the manufacture.
One way to know the real one from the fake one is by looking at the distance between the handles in the open position.
That's true, but some people polish up their ti 42s which can give it the same appearance.
I honestly think if the people making the fake replicas would just come up with their own design and logo, the knives would be more respected. I bought one from dhgate, and it flips pretty well actually.
What's the purpose of a butterfly knife? I personally could never figure it out.
Its just to show off how much of a badass you are
+rusza j That actually makes sense. So it's just Bruce Lee shit. Waste of titanium in my opinion.
Buck Shot basically
Concealment.
It's like a normal nice, but it's also cool, and really fun to do tricks with.
I am usually happy to find a fake 42. They are literally the exact same imo, and are maybe a sixth of the price~!
The 'fake' looks like a nicer finish honestly
I don't really think it's my place to judge a person based off if they buy a knock off or not. I know people have strong opinions on it, but I won't make a personal attack on someone cause they do it. However, I advise people against it cause I do feel it supports the wrong side.
doesnt the blade on a real 42 have the stopper as part of the tang? not a peg tapped through a hole? your 42 has a peg
They have a tang pin for locking in open position and a kicker on the blade to lock in closed position.
If anything, this video just encouraged me to go with the fake. If you say I'm not gonna know the difference, then that's an extra ~$300 in my pocket.
This must be a later gen model cause it was really really close. I could barely tell a
difference from only 1' away.
I also noticed that the handles on the fake made more of a V shape and didn't touch as much. Im not sure if you said that, but yeah
How long ago was this fake purchased ?
That I am aware of there have been two batches of fakes. Your one appears to be
from a new third batch. The latches of the first and second batches have a flat underside
your one is domed on both sides.
How is the tang pin ? Previous fakes have a very rough tang pin.
its a good reference video for the makers of the fake knives...
Can confirm- after ~2 months of flipping the fake balisong I've had no issues. $20 well spent.
i got my first butterfly knife about 4 years ago when i was still in taiwan, got it for about 10 bucks. i believe it was made in china, only works for about 2 months. actually after about a week it had some very serious rattle problems and finish came off super fast. but that knife got me into the whole knife world. oh, and the lock on it did not work at all.
Weight usually will be different. Fakes are usually heavier due to cheap materials being hevier.
Just ordered a fake one and cannot wait to get it
Pay attention to the drilled out holes in the handle. Look from the inside and you'll see imperfections if it's fake.
If you did not have enough money for a 42 (second hand) would you get the clone?
The logo is faded on every benchmade counterfeit I've come across, and there is always a more rigid indention from the blade going into the bottom of the blade piece.
It's safe if you got fake because it is not sharp so you don't get hurt or scar in hand right?
they made the "clones" to make people happy... model 42 was discontinued as you might know.. so the clone was made to make people happy.
I bought a fake 42T off of eBay a few years back. Thankfully it was only $20.
I bought it for $8 :D
u cant get it for 8 dollars, u can get a sandwich constructiun and its shit
I know im gonna get a lot of negativity for this but where can i find a fake one? ive always wanted a 42 but its way outa my price range.
Cant you check the frame with a magnet if the real one is titanium? Fakes should attract magnets much stronger than the real one.
The fake ones have machine marks in the circles and the fake ones are a lot heavier and inside the handles will have blobs of dried metal inside
Could Benchmade not just sue these very clear knockoffs for a replication of their design and logo or am I informed wrong?
Can't sue them because they are in China...
PkwyDrive13 Ohhh. That's too bad. I wish more people would support benchmade. :/
The tool markings on the blade give it away almost immediately. Never seen a Benchmade with a shitty grind like that.
the tang pins are different too, the chinese one has flat tang pins and the authentic has rounded tang pins
