Making Animal Fur Yarn for My Primitive Pillow

While hiking I passed by the kill site of where a coyote apparently attacked a rabbit the night before. I gathered the scattered clumps of rabbit hair and then got the idea to use my bushcraft skills to weave it into my yucca cordage to make a soft primitive yarn and then weave the yarn into a pillow. In this video I show exactly how I make 90 feet (27 meters) of soft yarn from material collected from various animals and also weave the backing of the pillow out of cattail leaves.

Thanks for making this video... it answers all my questions about making cordage from animal fur. I have two Pomeranians, and this skill will come in real handy.

Thank you!
I would like to thank you for your sharing this video .it is so good and amazing for me .I always watch it every day.
Thank you soooo much!
what a brilliant idea to braid the rabbit fur into the cordage! i would have just spun the rabbit fur and would have been stuck with a ball of thread.
La verdad me agradó demasiado y gracias por tener esa amplia gama de idiomas para poder entender.
Muy buen contenido.
Toma tú 👍
60 years later.....I love my new pillow!
If you could weave a pillow and stuff it full of fragrant tried grass and sage and other herbs... that would be very helpful for sleep!

I didn’t even realize that I braid my hair the way you are making rope and yarn 😐😂

Well, genial compadre!
Great skill, 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Chad. As ever it was a lovely piece of beauty. Just watching this does wonders for my blood pressure. So thank you again.
Are you trying out new things with the cinematography and editing? For some reason I was struck that there seem to be even more layers to the film. You're really turning the idea of a UA-cam video into a piece of artwork.
And I greatly, greatly appreciate it.
So have yet another thank you :)
Yes, I do get carried away with my movie making. For many years I wanted to be a cinema photographer so this is my way of expression. The next part of this video is even more cinematic. Really some beautiful shots. Great and interesting lighting. Stay tuned!
@@ChadZuberAdventures I don't think you're getting carried away at all - the results speak for themselves and they're spectacular.
Looking forward to the next segment!

Chad, excelente inicio, esas imágenes tuyas que tanto me gustan, muestran tu gran fortaleza, habilidad y destreza
Gracias Julio!
Chad, un gran abrazo y mi gran admiración. A sus pies, caballero
A couple of things about this video: (Great job, by the way!) I notice that the fur is under a tree. Is it possible that this is the work of a hawk or owl rather than a mammal? There is an owl (I guess) near me who sometimes catches more rats than it wants to eat and drops them where it roosts. Not it's sleeping place, but a dining area. I sometimes routinely find fur there. You might check the same place, there might be more fur.
Second, the fur is grey and white. It also exists in two forms, an outer hair and an inner type. I don't think rabbits or jackrabbits have that kind of fur in those colors, but possums do. There's a grey outer hair that on the beast is considered ugly but under that is lustrous white fur like you have there. I love what you did with the two colors in your yarn.
Since you clearly need a big blanket, and possums are common dead on the road, this could get out of hand quickly. In your quest for more of the fur you could start collecting road-killed possums and stripping them of their fur.
I don't know if you would want to post a video of you scraping a possum off of a road but you'd need to bring a friend to watch for cars. (It's the punchline of a joke about Texas A&M University)
J'aime beaucoup votre courage!
Saludos desde Argentina
Chad! Buddy! Send me the yarn and I'll crochet you an epic primitive pillow :D
I already used it all for my pillow! I will have to make more yarn.
@@ChadZuberAdventures I'm sure I could find some alpaca yarn and make one XD
Super cool you can do this. Great video as always chad🙌
Thanks so much!!
Have you considered using a drop spindle? It takes a bit of practice, but you'd be able to make yarn a lot faster.
Yes, I've thought about it however I do believe it wouldn't work well with these materials. Rabbit hair is very short. I think the spindle method requires longer strands to be effective.
I think you may be able to manage as you are using yucca fibres to stabilise the thread. It looks a lot like linen fibres. The rabbit hairs are definitely too short for a heavy drop spindle, but it could work of you spin on a stick. That's probably not what it's called in English, but basically you have a spindle stick, but no drop, and you just roll it on your thigh.
💋👏항상영상 제밋게 잘보고 있음니다
You love what you do?
Oh yeah!

Hola!
Kinda not sure if I believe you found the hair like this but still a lot of skill to do this ! Stay safe
Actually yes, I did find the hair and feathers shown in the video and more that weren't shown.
@@ChadZuberAdventures oh cool! Is it normal for them to come off? Idk much about southwestern fauna. Is it normal for the amount of fur to come off or was this just an attack?
@@MasterOfDestructionX Rabbits are plentiful here and they are the favorite food of coyotes. During an attack the rabbit struggles to escape amongst the claws and teeth of the coyote and sometimes a lot of fur is scattered. It's quite common.
