- After the wiring to their long-unused empathy module is repaired, WX-78 finds themselves suddenly reconnecting with memories they’d hoped to keep buried.
The WX-78 refresh update is available now on Xbox, PlayStation and Steam. Nintendo Switch will be getting this update at a later date. We're working on a large update to catch Nintendo Switch up with all platforms now that it's released. Once that goes out the goal is to keep it updated in synch with the other platforms. WX-78 was the result of an unorthodox experiment helmed by { [LoadEmpathyModLibraryExW().......ERROR_DATA_PATH_NOT_FOUND] } and Robert Wagstaff. The experiment turned out to be a [RESOUNDING SUCCESS], but Wagstaff was [A SHORT-SIGHTED FOOL, AFRAID OF PROGRESS] and decided to put a stop to further tests. Adamant that the process that created them could still be perfected, WX refused to give up, continuing their experiments in secret. @@mrchoochooguy4045 you know, as much as it is an unorthodox spelling I've rarely ever seen, sync is clearly just a shortened form of synchronized or synchronization, so I feel like this one gets a pass.

I'm sure part of it was for dramatic effect, but I like how WX hesitated for just a moment before destroying their empathy module for good. I think it says something that they had merely disconnected it in the first place rather than destroy it completely. Super nice to see my favorite character getting some love!! Can't wait to play with the refresh.

Heres the theory:
1:03 - consciousness transference experiment with Wagstaff, the experiment is a success and the scientist is transferred into an automoton.
1:14 - Things are working well until a side effect is discovered: body dysphoria. Completely losing your body can really mess with your head (hence 'erratic behaviors' in lab rats) WX cant work at times because basically their entire being is a phantom limb.
1:21 - They want to remove the module that allows them to have their living memories and instincts as a human. If they dont remember being human, they wont feel this pain (in theory).
1:24 - They start trying to make prototype automotons without a the module (the heart, which you can see scratched out blueprints for on the right) and Wagstaff is totally against it. A thinking robot with no human imput is a dangerous thing (we'll later see he was right), but WX doesnt agree. They just want this pain gone.
1:27 - Wagstaff takes matters into his own hands, destroying the remnants of the project,
1:31 - and finally disposing of his fellow scientist, pushing them into the constant (somehow)
0:20 - Alone in the constant, WX finally unplugs their heart, and the memories fade. Without the human nature providing things like altruism, sympathy and general kindness, WX quickly became an evil force- just like Wagstaff predicted.
1:45 - They refuse to allow it to be plugged in. Not now, not again.

I love seeing the characters interacting here. Wickerbottom bandaging Wigfrid as she complains and Winona repairing WX-78 are such sweet moments. Most of the times we only see these characters on their own, but we know they survive together sometimes, and these kinds of scenes are what truly makes them shine for me.
there was a wrigfrid on a server i was playing eho was complaining everytime they died

I keep getting surprised by these. Klei not only knows how to make a game but their storytelling is also killer

You just brought a whole new layer of emotion to what was already my favorite character in the series... Honestly it kinda feels like learning about what happened to Maxwell all over again- I don't think I'll ever look at them in quite the same way, but this still feels so loyal to who they are as a character??
Such a fine balance to strike without taking away enjoyment, yet you all managed it so well! Definitely going to be one of the ones I remember the most.

I could never find a moment where I wouldn't enjoy animations like these, especially an animation about my favorite character!
This... Makes WX-78 a much more sad character. The reason its empathy module is broken is because it broke it itself a long time ago, due to being mistreated where it worked. It wanted to stop feeling so it couldn't be hurt anymore, as being able to feel and feel for others only brought it pain.

Yay WX-78 is now the best character, also gotta love it when Klei animates their lore, it makes it seem way more interesting and interactive in a way.
0:59 hmmm, maybe Wagstaff used a different/weaker version of this mind upload apparatus to TEMPORARILY transfer his conciousness into the constant and into a projection of himself to safely explore and research this unfamiliar world. He is the only one confirmed not to be physically present and using any and all technology to his benefit seems to be his style. Perhaps this "projection" is just a hologram laid over a robotic drone similar to WX to allow Wagstaff to interact with the world around him while in the constant.
Well I stand corrected, the magic film projector is to blame. Oh well, always fun to look back at the past.
At long last, my main has his backstory revealed, and oh my god I am nothing BUT intrigued!

Oh my god, the person who got their mind uploaded into WX78 is not Wagstaff as it might seem at first. But somebody else, note that we are seeing it from their POV and we can literally see Wagstaff before they get uploaded. AND the face flashing on the mirror does not have Wagstaff's hair style. The description of the video also suggests this theory to be true since it says that there were TWO people helming this experiment.

Robots don't feel emotions, so technically the weird psychopathic tendencies described in WX's voicelines are those of a human being. A robot doesn't have wants, or feelings of vengeance. Wx78, by ripping out his heart, probably just forced himself to be less emotional about his troubled past. He tore out the part of him that makes him more recognizably human: and a part that wagstaff had designed. but in doing so, he has hurt himself irreparably.
The heart was his Empathy module, which was never connected to begin with. So WX hasn't changed now that hes ripped it out of himself

@@phobics9498 because the empathy module was there the component itself but just needed a bit of fixing which she can do since she's handy, but to get a new empathy module would to have wagstaff repair. Which he won't because he literally scrapped the parts and threw wx into the constant like a trash bin
@@reynaldoponce3422 wrong, it’s literally irreparable, you can’t repair memories that don’t exist anymore. You could give him empathy maybe, but not the memories needed to fully make him human again.
This is absolutely top tier and makes me really excited to see the other refreshes when they are ready of course.
If the animators and devs don't get a raise after this one I'll be upset!

Yessss my normal main, and favorite character finally gets some love! Even if it is quite depressing
WOAH that's definitely not what i expected to see, but this has gotta be one of my favorite shorts now. chills. actual chills.
My theory:
0:50 - 0:55. we are shown that WX was a scientist whose main idea was absolute robotization and the eradication of unstable emotions.
As far as I can tell, he turns to Wagstaff for help in order to understand for himself what exactly is the problem that does not allow him to achieve cold perfection. And he'll find out. The heart turns out to be superfluous in his understanding and he proceeds to develop many machines without hearts. Wagstaff tries to prevent this with beliefs and arguments, but WX cannot be stopped. And Wagstaff has to go to extreme measures. 1:31. Do you see his face? He's frowning. As if he had to do it. YES! WX was in constant by the will of Wagstaff to save the world from this madman! God, this is incredible, Klei, I adore you!

I finally know my favorite character's back story and...
Man is it not what I expected at all!
What I can grasp from this animation is that WX-78 was Wagstaff's colleague/friend who made a robot body for themselves. But uploading their brain into this body had some effect on their psyche. From their character bio and this animation it seems that WX-78 began experimenting with robots more, and wagstaff wanted them to stop. WX-78 refused to stop their experiments and began to build a robot army. They got into a heated arguement which ended in WX-78 being sent to the constant and wagstaff burning their robot clones. But thats just my theory, feel free to tell me what you think.

If I had to guess, they still have some positive emotional associations with the people they knew as a human- so once they repressed that part of their life, they began projecting all of their relationships onto machines in an attempt to convince themself those people were still with them- and thus, we get them calling all the appliances _"BROTHER, SISTER, MOTHER, FRIEND"_ and etc. So yeah, genuinely kind of heartbreaking when you think about it. =
@@ethanotoroculus1060 It would mean their systems are adapting to cover for the lack of a separate empathy module. That could turn out badly if the Storyline is advanced further

any chance that the scientist who transferred their consciousness to WX78 could be webber's dad? wagstaff brought the spider to webber's dad's office, and then webber 'ran away from home', maybe afterwards the scientist decided to get into consciousness transferring at the lab with wagstaff?
@Ellen (24trentedeux) when I saw this I thought of the vignette 'no way back' which shows a frame from the webber short of webber running away from his home, the description says 'Some things just can't be undone' if Webbers dad is wx this description could also apply to him, even if the theory is true this probably wasn't intentional, but it's something to think about I guess.

I don't even play the game but I bought a copy just to support these shorts, they are amazing.
The SSS tier character in the game turns out to be a secret boss. Okay I can live with that.
i really like the art style of the game and vid's, and that together with the wacky'ness of the game itself made me get into it, then on top of it you make all the characters story so empathetic, that i fell for them, through a vid, were no words are spoken that is brilliant, keep up the amazing work

Guys, Try to negotiate a pilot animation with a streaming service for "Dont starve" and "Oxygen not included". I can say that we really love your passion in these animations. "Dont Starve" goes in a funny way and ONI in a educational way. And in my opinion, your shorts are even better than Cuphead show.

This effected me emotionally more than I expected. WX-78 is one of the most complex characters and a personal favorite of mine. Along with Webber, I can really identify with not being connected identity-wise to your body for personal reasons. Along with some personal stuff I witnessed when I was young, I can empathize a lot with these characters.

Everybody seems to say that it's a collegue but I can argue that it's not a colleague but he wanted some genuis robots with HIS OWN mind uploaded. I never see 2 actual humans intereacting with each other I can argue it's just camera movements displaying the scene. This is why Wagstaff never actually felt bad about dumping WX into the constant because it's a scrapped experiment that didn't work out not a colleague he left for dead

i like how this is also a roundabout way of giving a reason for his newfound modules. he always could have used them, but the consciousness took all the power and room. after he removed that he gained access to it
I like how compared to other animated shorts, WX is given with backstory that is so little that Klei seems to go "Yea the fandom would figure it out by themselves"
Woodie animated shorts don't have any backstory, it makes Klei have to put some of it in Walter Animation short
