all he wanted was to be accepted for what he is at his heart, a living being, not seen as a scourge of the planet, not seen as the doombringer, not seen as someone who hurts others by just existing, not seen as a pawn to be thrown away when he fulfilled his task.. he wanted a hug, and a place to call home. And for that, he was attracted by his worst enemies but also given the life of a rockstar with all the downsides of being looked as attractive but not as lovable. Without Lloyd, he probably would have thrown himself against a wall and stayed in that mess forever without being appreciated for his own ideals. All because his parents didn't want him per se, all because of Cruxis maddening plan to create a vessel for Martel, a female one on top of that, so Zelos would have been thrown away either way by Yggdrasil in the long run. It's because of that that his Flanoir scene is basically livechanging for him, and one of the most crucial and sadly well hidden secrets of the game and backgroundstories. Because that scene has to be the most sought after scene as every other one is presented during the main story, even Kratos', while his is hiding, like he himself does to a degree from others, like he admitted.
Both Kratos and Zelos are so similar from their tragic pasts. :( Both have had a loved one killed from a half-elf and both had internally conflicted with themselves about doing the right thing. Zelos's release were woman, attention, and constant praise . Kratos' release was clinging to Mithos's ideals and letting his son kill him for "punishment." Both characters decided to do the right thing in the end, but I can't help but feel sorry for them :( Zelos parents were forced into marrying and paid little attention to him. His father was cheating on Mylene (his wife) with the mistress (thus Seles was born). Zelos's father passed away after that, causing more distress. Seles' mom, wanting a better life for her and her child (due to being a half-elf), decided to attempt to murder Zelos (because his father's title of the "chosen" got passed on to him when he died). Mylene got caught in this cross-fire and before she died she said "You should have never been born." Seles' mom got executed, Seles got put under house arrest for life, and this whole thing scared Zelos. Making him believe it was his fault for not being able to save his mom, and he hated the "chosen' system for forcing this misery on him. He started to loath the "chosen" system and himself. He also though Seles would be a better chosen them him, deepening his already low self-esteem, but since Meltokio has high social demands he had no choice but to bottle it up (which made the problem even worse). Kratos was forced to kill his wife because of Kvar ( a human ranch master) turning her into a monster, lost his son (Lloyd), felt like he failed as a father towards his only son for something his couldn't control and is generally scared by the experience causing him to get his morals messed up. Believing that dying would be the proper "punishment" for his sins It was very shocking seeing a comic relief character have such a tragic past and I didn't expect Kratos to even be internally hurt. I didn't expect both to be suicidal in the first place for things they could not control. This game really shows realistic reactions to tragic events and how people find ways to "release" their pain.
Zelos is my favorite character. All the crap he went through, his own mother's dying words rebuking his birth. He also thought that Seles hated him too. He lived most of his life in anguish and self-loathing. Yet, in the end, he still did the right thing and was loyal to his friends. All most people see is an arrogant pervert, but when I see Zelos, I see a fierce, loyal friend who would give his life for those he loves.
Zelos no doubt has one of the deeper backstories along with Kratos. The thing is, we go through every character's story arc in the game except Zelos himself until the very end and it honestly doesn't even go that far into it until Zelos tells us about it in Flanoir. I really wished we could have had Angel Zelos in battle.
and all that leading to Zelos' line during the finale "The people I like, and the people I don't, both deserve to live in the same world as me" looking at all the messed up shit that happened to Zelos, it's almost miraculous that he has that mindset at the end
@@MrZahsome honestly, I think withholding Zelos' backstory was done intentionally. Throughout the entire story, despite how well it seems like he gets along with everyone, he never really opens up to the group, except Lloyd, the same way that Sheena, Presea, and Regal do (and while the Sylvarant cast all have some skeletons in their closets, they've still known each their entire lives). And even when Zelos does open up to Lloyd, it's only really done during the scenes that are dependent on affection. He's closed himself off, intentionally, so he can play the role of triple agent without getting emotionally invested, except he does get emotionally invested.
funny enough, that dialogue is part of an erased originally planned storyline were Zelos was ALWAYS meant to die at that point UNLESS you have his highest affinity to him. But because Kratos' storyline was implemented, Zelos only temporarly betrays you and thus his "originally planned out dying" was pushed towards the Kratos route, thus to some degree "Kratos saving Zelos" on regular playthrough base.
James Oh, I thought he didn't say anything in the Zelos-betrayal route... When I wrote the Comment, I meant that I felt that the entire path Zelos chose pretty much Hinged on Lloyds words... which it kinda does
+tagumonman55 Also, Zelos brings up the fact that Lloyd didn't really trust him the whole time before going all suicidal. It really did hinge on Lloyd's words.
I feel like the most fitting route is the Kratos route. It gives Kratos his opportunity to redeem himself for his sins. I also like the idea of one party member pretending to be your enemy but really be on your side and rhen another being on the enemy side but pretending to be on yours.
You know, in my first playthrough, if I'd realized how I would totally taken this route... But now, in later playthroughs, Zelos has just grown on me so much that I can't do it...

Dat boy really has a load to deal with, I kind of knew he is the "running away" type of an human but still :/ Anyway, I kinda symphatize with him, yet, he isn't my favorite character and also I like his fighting style, but just because kratos isn't in my party ^^'
***** Yeah, when he mentions being a Chosen isn't exactly roses he isn't kidding. He also has legitimate reasons to hate half-elves personally unlikemost Tethe'allans who do it because they are scared/jealous of how long-lived they are. Um, I think not considering the the second game he's alive. I also love how apparently the second game hints that the Zelos' ending is the right one even though Colette's is a lot easier to get. Also why is Zelos is harder is max affection with.
CaramellNeko I just realized something about them. They're both comic relief characters who have much more to do with the game's overall story than other party members. What with Jade being the whole reason Van came up with the idea of replicating the world, and Zelos working as a spy for Cruxis and the Renegades, and being a Chosen.
