@Nothing To See Here This is the opinion of someone who knows absolutely nothing about the art side of Twitter. Yeah but that’s like what 5% of his net worth? You all thinking he really gives a shit about it is most funny. Tesla, spaceX, starlink, and neuralink are his primary focus. Twitter is just a tax write off.
I always thought forcefully monetizing the twitter accounts of big companies was a veeeeery easy and straight forward way for twitter to make money, since making money from the common users is very hard, and potentially making them leave the platform. 1000 dollars is way less than what big companies are willing to pay, so that was wierd, but not even taking the money from the bigger ones? Only taking from the small companies? What is going on?
What's going on is Elon is a moron and has cratered Twitter's revenue by over 40% in under a year, and he's desperately trying to make it back by charging money for a little check mark. Only problem is, only the biggest, dorkiest losers are paying $8 and businesses are lining up in droves to laugh at the prospect of paying $1000 a month for no real benefit whatsoever, so Musk has completely failed at monetising Twitter, with less than one tenth of one percent of users (0.1%) choosing to "upgrade", way below his laughable target of 2%. Ultimately we should all be thankful to Elon for providing us with such intense comedy, and for making it so much easier to spot his smoothbrained simps.
The last change you mentioned about restricting accounts that aren't check marked or some shit is extremely detrimental to new artists trying to grow their platform. @@gremlininblue2601 Hardly an Elon Fanboy, as he is anti right-to-repair. You though are complaining that a feature that use to cost thousands for you as a pleb to recieve now costing only a tiny fraction of that. Where is the logic in that? You now have an option to pay a small amount of money to increase how much a website promotes your art, and you can decide if you want to do it or if it isn't worth it. If you decide it isn't worth it, you aren't any worse off than you were before as you are still competing against others who lack the checkmark. Checkmarks always gave a boost based off of having a checkmark, just now it is more accessible for more people to pay for that benefit. Unless we manage to create an AI that is extremely good at detecting bots reliably, the best method of preventing bot spam and manipulation on social platforms is via subscription fee's. You probably should expect for things like this to become more common in the future rather than less as running more and more complex bots becomes easier and cheaper. That would be a much healthier mentality than complaining you can't get a service for free because you arbitrarily decided you deserve it for free.

Elon values the people’s voices and freedom of speech so much he’s putting polling & voting behind a paywall that barely offers anything in return. Maybe he’s bitter about that poll he lost about stepping down. The algorithm thing really irritates me because it potentially could ruin the way people can go viral and get discovered. A small creator like myself benefits from networking and getting noticed and this could stunt any natural growth. He’s creating a problem and selling the solution. My guess about the gore stuff is that it's likely the same group that will occasionally spam FA with a bunch of real life gore/criminal evidence pictures. The difference here is that FA has at least competent enough staff that are immediately on top of it whenever it happens and very quickly removes them while Twitter doesn't really have a staff to do that. I'd imagine that the group that does that crap likely figured out they could get away with it on Twitter -shrug-. I don't remember if they come from 4chan or specifically a real life gore enthusiasts forum, either way they're crappy people because they be posting that stuff with out any tags/warnings/whatever which of course results in people being subjected to terrible stuff.
are they having another gore spam again? I remember the whole scare on twitter a few years back where videos would be laced with those gore videos, so you could very well be watching some cute video on cats then see some guy get his head chopped off. Musk fired all the moderators and even a lot of the staff that work on the core systems. He even tried to fire people he couldn't legally fire (referring to Halli, which is a crazy story in itself). It's no wonder the platform barely functions as it is.
@@RyuFitzgerald Musk "didn't have a choice" because he overpaid out of the ass for Twitter and took out giant loans for his purchase at a time when interest rates were at a 30 year high. The interest he pays on his purchase is why he's in such a dire position financially, and it's nobody's fault but his own. Those employees didn't ask or want a billionaire to single-handedly buy their company and basically bankrupt the company before new management even arrived, but that's what happened. Musk did have a choice, he could've chose not to feed his own ego and obsession with tweeting by buying a $44 Billion company that's now valued under $20 Billion only months later.
@@RyuFitzgerald It absolutely does matter what Musk paid for it, because those loans automatically became Twitter's own debt, i.e. Musk basically forced the company into massive debt and yearly interest fees that it could not possibly pay off - this is why Musk fired nearly all of Twitter's employees. He's basically pulling out every stop to try to make Twitter turn a profit, or at the very least pay off their interest payments (thus his asinine "Twitter Blue" debacle), all so it doesn't go bankrupt from the interest rates alone. Buying Twitter for $44 Billion was such a terrible decision that it basically doomed the company and all its employees before the business even turned ownership, ensuring the company would spiral and snowball into more debt unless drastic changes were made. In other words, all this shit is 100% Musk's fault. While you're correct tech companies are laying off workers, layoffs of 80-90% of all employees is beyond insane. For perspective, Disney laid off thousands of workers that accounted for 3-4% of its headcount. Facebook (or should I say, "Meta") is one of the most drastic examples considering they also spent upwards of $36 Billion on the failed Metaverse. After spending nearly as much money as Musk on Twitter, it still has only laid off 12% of its workforce so far. There are announcements that this number may rise in the next year, but even their worst projections has a max overall reduction of 25% of their headcount. In other words, what Musk is doing is so unprecedented that even Meta's colossal fuckup with the Metaverse doesn't even come close to the complete mismanagement and dumpster fire that Twitter has unfortunately become - likely why everyone is seeing NSFW, gore and snuff videos on their For You timelines & many of their core systems just stop working suddenly from time to time.
"Okay so we're adding gold checkmarks for companies guys, and we're making them hella expensive. Except of course for the wealthiest companies in the world, they get it for free." I have no words.
I don't think the vagueness of the blue checkmarks is gonna prevent people from knowing you paid when they see an account with 6 followers that joined 2 months ago with a blue check
Charlie last point resonated with me. I am 32 years old, never used or signed up for Twitter and it hasn't affected my life or my business. If you see the value, but cannot afford it, then I get why you would be upset, but otherwise Twitter isn't the site that comes to mind when thinking promotion of a company. Take that 1000$ a month and invest it into ADs and paid promotions on UA-cam or Google, you'll get way more value then your Twitter account with a few hundred followers and a check mark. This is the internet, there is a lot of competition and value that can be gained from 1000$, plus no one is forcing you to stay on Twitter or use it.
Making small business pay 1000$ per month but exempting the big ones who could easily afford it is exactly what I expected from Musk. It's the opposite of what any reasonable person would do, so only a genius like Musk could think of it. It fits to his philosophy that the rich should get money from the government and the poor should pay (no joke, he said this).
I honestly thought they did this on April first so they could reverse it by claiming it was a prank if there was enough backlash, but nah they just kept that shit 😂
they gave up 10 million on possible sales from these huge ass companies that can afford the gold checkmark for nothing 💀 all it did was anger the small businesses that are the majority
I luckily haven't been seeing gore videos, but I *have* been experiencing repetition. My For You page gets riddled with the same tweets over and over and over and over and over and over again. So did this literally just happen the other day? I avoid Twitter unless I'm deliberately looking for something, but just last night I was wondering why Adult Swim's Twitter had a gold checkmark because I had never seen one before.
charlie if you bring back tier lists PLEASE DO SALAD DRESSINGS either that or if you haven’t done cereal then cereal, i’m still binging the tier list series but i’m absolutely loving it so far
The one thing I disagree on is whether the verification mark has value in the first place. I can see why Charlie wouldn't care, he's already very well known, but I think it definitely does matter for smaller creators. Artists for example may get more commissions if they have the checkmark as a sort of mark of quality.
A mark of quality? You have to be fucking joking. Anyone who's talented might be talented and broke as shit. Anyone who's rich can have absolutely ZERO talent. That's the shittiest, and metaphorically cheapest way of tricking people.
A very curated twitter "for you" and myself being algorithmed into those of cultured individuals is how I find people in niche communities of mine, and no way in hell are me and my fellow extremely specific shitposters paying for verification.

Ultimately we should all be thankful to Elon for providing us with such intense comedy, and for making it so much easier to spot his smoothbrained simps.
elon doesnt want to anger his daddies with a 1000 a month charge
Elon is a pure unadulterated capitalist who will stop at nothing to keep making more. He just spun some very good PR about him caring about the planet
The magical world of hyper-capitalism.
Obviously Elon is catering to the people that are like him. Not the average user.
It fills me with joy every time I remember I've never owned a twitter account.
It's funny watching freeloaders get mad when the cookie jar is taken from them.
lmao same... that platform has been filled with nothing but disaster since Day 1, much less with it's Musk-y repackaging.
The last change you mentioned about restricting accounts that aren't check marked or some shit is extremely detrimental to new artists trying to grow their platform. (Like me) We need that random chance to get on a somewhat bigger account to be able to grow.
Restricting that ruins Twt for a lot of artists and we'll have to suffer with Instagram
Just pay for the checkmark. Previously you had to pay in the thousands to get verified if you weren't already famous, now it is cheaper.
@@bewawolf19 ooooor they should be able to without having to pay money to a billionare at all??? What part of detrimental to new artists trying to grow don't you understand? Not sure why I'm bothering, you're probably just a bot or some elon defender fanboy
@@gremlininblue2601 "ooooor they should be able to without having to pay money to a billionare at all?" How will that work? Use the old system where you already need to have a lot of followers to be verified? Because currently if small artist want to get fame they will have to get the verified checkmark
@@Argonikron You're missing the whole point. This system makes it so that they won't be shown and won't be able to have polls for their audience just because they're not forking over money for a checkmark, not that they need to be checkmarked at all. It's not about the verification, it's about them making it so that only those who pay show up. They're literally just making a system worse to punish those who don't pay for a free website instead of coming up with new things for payers that doesn't make the site actively worse than it was before. I'm not sure where you're getting this being about them needing to be verified just to have a following and to do commissions. I don't think you're understanding what me or the op is even saying at all
@@gremlininblue2601 Hardly an Elon Fanboy, as he is anti right-to-repair.

A lot of changes have killed lots of the engagement for us smaller self publishers (the few circles I’m in).
So you are mad you are not getting free advertising and publicity?
not free advertising. 😂 my pinned tweet is a link to my work and that’s it.
I was there to meet other individuals in my industry/profession. All of my activity is in my messages/groups networking/talking about/giving/getting/advice/tips in writing/self publishing.
The main thing for me was a shift to what’s recommended to me. If I want to see politics I’d watch the news. My feed went from my industry which is the only thing I follow/search, to politics. The users I’m being recommended to follow are various stages of politics. And that content shift has wrecked/driven some of the groups/communities I’m in.

My Twitter For You is filled with literal graphic smut and violence also. And I have never liked, shared, or searched for that content on Twitter.
There is something very weird going on with that algorithm. I can’t imagine that this stuff is so prevalent/ popular that it would be recommended just out of its own popularity, and not factoring my own interests.
Like maybe Musk disabled all filters so as such to protect free speech? And so weird popular stuff is getting recommended? But if that’s the case, I’d assume I would just see more ‘normie’ content, like if you go to UA-cam and you aren’t signed into your account. You just see Me Beast videos, and other family friendly, boring, tame popular content.
I can’t imagine this snuff/ graphic violence is as popular and viral as normie Mr Beast content though.
You can literally type in anything into the search bar and there is like a 99% chance that if you scroll for more than 10 seconds you will see some gross ass porn. It’s ridiculous. I’m just trying to look up stuff for video games, sports, or world news. Nobody wants to see that shit.
I bet Elon's fetish is showing people graphic content unexpectedly, and he's so self-centered that he's incapable of understanding why it makes a bad site-wide policy
It's like that because it's what people want!
@@apo11ocat not sure if you’re joking or sincere. But I highly doubt there are so many people interested in seeing snuff/ graphic violence on the intervener for it to be prevalent in a recommended, without having any priory algorithmic knowledge of your interest in it. I know there are wierdo’s and sicko’s who enjoy that stuff, but they are a tiny niche minority.
In fact, I’d think I’d be more likely to see basket weaving videos recommended to me rather than graphic violence and snuff. Even though I have no interest in basket weaving. But it probably has a bigger audience than snuff.
For some weird reason the "liked by [user you follow]" or "retweeted by [user you follow]" was removed, and it annoys me so much because i want to see less of ehat they're retweeting or liking but I can't because it's not there anymore.
Honestly what I'm trying to say is that some of the people you're following is liking that stuff and it's appearing on the timeline, but you can't tell because that feature was removed. Or it's some sort of bullshit with the algorithm. I saw a post that showed how it worked, and likes gave posts a 30x boost, with media boosting it even more.

Blue literally has no incentive for me, ironically enough I’ve been told having it doesn’t even help you get more engagement so it’s a joke right now.
I’m not opposed to a subscription service but you have to give a real reason to people to buy it
I think he genuinely wanted to nuke the blue checkmarks, thinking it would encourage everyone who had one to buy it. But instead he realized there was NO chance of anyone buying it and realized he needed to keep legacy marks around just to keep his few subscribers.

Was some scary shit man, i wouldn't be surprised if the gore intensified because of the whole dumb checkmark.
The really fun part is that people can still know if you got Twitter Blue if they have any of those "Show who paid for twitter blue" addons.

The one thing I disagree on is whether the verification mark has value in the first place. I can see why Charlie wouldn't care, he's already very well known, but I think it definitely does matter for smaller creators.
