I've been using 3ds max and blender for years now and always avoided diving into Maya just because it looks so intimidating and out of my comfort zone. After following this tutorial, I see that it isn't that bad - there's just a lot going on in the UI but once you know the basics everything else falls into place. Thank you for this tutorial and I made it!
It is been a while I have maya and everytime I was seeing tutorial I was getting bored and I was stooping middle of it, but this time I watched it all and learned a lot. pretty effective, thanks.
Cam raiD Awesome! am sure you're really good at modeling now. I like to make updated versions of some of my older videos. My first tutorial made was a soda can back in maya 2011 lol
Fantastic work. I have been looking for good maya tutorials for what seems like forever, at last I have found one :-) Not new to 3d but very new to maya.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! Helped me revised on Maya a whole lot. :) Haven't touched the program for a year now, and i've forgotten most of the basics haha
PLZ HELP so when i highlight the top vertex points and drag them inwards like he said it basically connects the whole line from the bottom so it like creates a cone looking shape and idk how to fix it im also pretty new to maya.... also the lines are a light blue and the points are purple and when i try to do what he does at 11:54 the lines turn dark yellow idk if that makes a diffrence
I made this, I loved the tutorial, easy to follow, thoroughly explained and easy to understand. Thank you! I did however, wonder how to create the tab and can opening lines.
Thank you, I have a video on the tab part too. For the opening lines you can import a ref pic from the top video, and a new edge line at the top and trace the shape from the image by moving vertices.
@11:52 - My Soft Selection (under Modeling Tools) was on by default, (just like proportional mode in Blender). I was getting irritated because I knew what the issue was, the problem was finding it. I come from using mostly Blender and C4D, this is a lot like Blender but with everything mixed around and renamed, lol.
18:40 doesnt work for me. I use maya 2018. But whan i hold ctrl and want to deselect side surface it also deselect top surface too. What to do ? thanks
I was missing a line between top surface and side surface ( i dont know how, maybe i miss clicked something before ). I added a line all around between top and side surface and now its all good. Now i can finish this tutorial :) thanks for a quick answer. very good tutorial!
Loved this video, my very first Maya project, it went super well. Would have made it better if you'd have added textures and finished the project with lighting and scene though :)
Cinema 4d can use edge loop on triangle. C4Dcan select only face polygon, without deselect by ctrl, c4d can turn on xray on single model, c4d slide vertex on edges, c4d have loop selection, you can see, what polygons you will select, c4d have phong selection and etc etc etc.
Im losing my mind! i did exactly what he said but when i got to 11:38 when im selecting the shape it doesn't select only the top row but all of the shape, and then it doesn't come out like in 11:54 what am i doing wrong?!
Such a lovely models created but i can't catch your speedy could u plz make a video step by step it really helps so many students who can't afford to get paid courses.
you didnt model the top and opening. the can itself is very easy. i came to see if you had a more simplified way to do it but you just left it out. i cant put this basic cylinder in my final render. is there a part 2 where you finish it??
Hello Sir, Thank you for your amazing videos. I am asking you some quick help please. I am currently modeling something that i want to patent using maya 2016 and 2018. I am of course a beginner. Is there anyway that i can export images for patent drawings using maya . If yes would you please tell me the steps . I thanks you in advance for your time and comments. Best Regards , St-Fleur
thanks for your answer ! the problem i guest its patent drawings are particular .., they are just simple black lines on a white sheet with some numbers in regard to the description of the product description.nothing else.. Any advice on how to save a part of a scene in another file without saving the entire scene . i mean saving just a part of it and export it to a previous scene. thank you sir!
Oh you mean technical drawings? Like Autocad style? I am actually not sure if you can do that within Maya, it's prob possible but I don't particularly know how. You can export models seperately from Maya by selecting them and going to export selection, choose either .obj or .fbx for the export file type.
hey, so i'm unsure how you got those songs that are in the background of this video but they are not the ones listed in the comments. In fact, I immediately recognized these songs from my childhood. The songs in the video are from Yu-Gi-Oh games such as False Bound Kingdom and Duelist of the Roses.
Thanks you so much!!!!You give me answer, it makes me pain in my head ,can you see my thoughts soulbrother ?Before 3 days i have this question in my mind why in cinema 4d is impossible to import an image in a perspective view.
Thank you so much for making this tutorial but you might want to think about adding an actual link to what stock image you are using instead of just saying to find one. thanks a bunch though. very helpful video :)
I am losing my mind. I follow the steps exactly. But every time I get where you switch to vertex. I highlight them and the pivot is not on the centred vertex which causes it to all become off centred and wonky.
That's odd, did you somehow move the pivot point by mistake. If this is the case, select the vertices and double click on the move tool icon( on the left side of the interface) to open the options. Under the move settings - pivot- click on reset . Hopefully that helps.
Seeing these basic questions allot, so quick how too.

This video is gold. Explaining other ways or making it the wrong way on purpose makes it so much more valuable!!

Awesome! You can also use the multicut tool, it's a little bit easier to use too.
This is an awesome way to show how to model it from the ground up without using the revolve tool. Thanks for sharing!
Ahhh, the old soda can. Thank you for sharing over the years. The original one was my first project on maya.

18:40 doesnt work for me. I use maya 2018. But whan i hold ctrl and want to deselect side surface it also deselect top surface too. What to do ? thanks
make sure you are not dragging over the whole thing and only the bottom of the side faces.
I was missing a line between top surface and side surface ( i dont know how, maybe i miss clicked something before ). I added a line all around between top and side surface and now its all good. Now i can finish this tutorial :) thanks for a quick answer. very good tutorial!

You can export renders from Maya, just have to render and then save the image where you want. Look up how to render in Maya tutorials.
