In 1965, guitarists Carl Giammarese and Nick Fortuna, along with bassist Curtis Bachman, were invited to join a band called the Centuries. Giammarese and Bachman, plus keyboardist Dennis Miccolis, later became members of another band, the Pulsations, whose members included drummer John Poulos and vocalists George LeGros and Dennis Tufano. After winning a local battle of the bands competition in late 1965, the Pulsations secured a job as the house band on WGN-TV's variety show called ALL-TIME HITS. The show's producers suggested they adopt a name reflective of the British invasion, which was popular at the time, and the band adopted the name The Buckinghams, which was suggested by a security guard named John Opager at the station. The band liked the name because of its similarity to a hometown landmark, Buckingham Fountain.
If I take anything away from this video, it is gratitude that the band found their own voice in their original material. Their talent definitely transcends this material, but, I suppose at the time, it was a paycheck.
I've only read about their days on WGN but I never expected to see them. And the picture is clearer than any of the and 1967 appearances and equal to the Sullivan Show. Thanks ! That must be original keyboardist Dennis Miccolis on screen
Yes, it's rare when you see an original videotape master recording from the 60s. Most of them were erased, and then used to record the next show, in order to save money on expensive tape.
Bands consist of human beings, and human beings don't want to be shot, so bands avoid American high schools. The kids are forced to expose themselves to the latest American killer wacko but the bands can choose otherwise, and they do.

Much enjoyed this utube video of" best selling songs of all time" . Bukinghams band were awesome with lead singers Dennis Tufano and in this video George Legroe. Always enjoyed seeing this group in person at the Holiday dance hall and at Antones in Chicago. I believe they are still performing!! Anthony Joseph Lucchese
Dennis had some balls to sing Unchained live , .since Hatfield was one of the greatest of all time, but he belted it out. and did well. One reason I love Dennis Tufano.
+Tommiegirl G you don't have to feel sheepish Tommiegirl. the Intriguing thing is that we had the same thoughts about Unchained... and Bobby Hatfield..... and that we liked The Buckinghams and we both landed on this obscure video... how about those go-go dancers? .
Al Mason Oh, those dancers. I laughed so hard at those dancers the first time I had to go back and listen to "Candy Man" again. You have to wonder what the guys in the band thought, though Tufano did a nice job of ignoring them. :) I was glad they didn't show up for Unchained Melody so we could just focus on the music!
+Tommiegirl G you know they really were pretty good dancers. They just had the world's worst choreography.... But watching them try to "Sell it" is what was so fun to watch.... But you know it really wouldn't be Go-Go without the watusi..Hey... I'm going back to listen to Candyman :) :)
Hi Al, Dennis was only 16 or 17 when he sang Unchained. Bobby Hatfied an experienced singer in his 20s. This is before our "success" so we were doing tunes we loved not to compete, we were just having fun. I sure miss that free spirit. Singing difficult songs like that gave him the experience to become the perfect singer for Buckingham hits. Thanks

Nice! Covering Unchained Melody is still a tricky proposition, because of the range needed to rock it - and was even more so back in the day, because you were inevitably going to be compared to Bobby Hatfield (And probably lose, because, Bobby Hatfield). But Tufano did a nice job. And their Candy Man was great.

As an European and true Rock and Roll and Beatles fan I must say that these Beatles covers are totally crap! Why cover Beatles (or song of Elvis) because no one can make them better. Listen The original Beatles not poor cover ones. In 60's there were lot's of good Rock bands in USA like The Birds, The Beach Boys, The Stooges, The Doors and list goes on.
Michael, let's just calm down a bit, shall we? This was a Chicago TV show, and it was made in 1965, or not even a full year after 'Beatlemania' was a thing. The Buckinghams, in their original fashion, were simply an unknown group who recently changed their name from "The Pulsations". Unknown local groups often did 'covers' of Beatles and Elvis as a way of giving youngsters a taste of the Beatles without having to go far. It's what they DID. Nobody is saying go out and BUY the Buckinghams live covers of Beatles songs. I'm guessing you didn't live in the 1960s or 1970s, and instead grew up with instant music like MTV and then UA-cam. Wasn't like that then.
Yes I am. As an European 1967 Beatles, Rolling Stones and of course The Doors were at the top. But what comes to my first comment 1965 Buckinghams had higher Rockabilly hair than Elvis :) Looked so terrible.
*Michael64Guitars* Again, being European is no excuse for being unnecessarily rude and ignorant of how things were. As I said before...this was 1965, not even a year after "Beatlemania" was a thing. Throughout the first half of 1965, Americans couldn't get enough of the Beatles and thus loved sound a like groups for one or two songs ("Lies" by the Knickerbockers comes to mind) and many an American group decided that they had to have "British sounding names" to do this. "Knickerbockers", "Byrds" and yes the "Buckinghams" (partially named after Buckingham Fountain in Chicago, where the group was from). So, you have a time in 1965 where groups readily wanted to sound British (and yes the rockabilly hair is out of place, but remember, those guys were also working day jobs and maybe living at home, so they probably couldn't look TOO much like long hairs) and this was a paid gig on a local show. For what it was, it's not bad but, yeah, nobody would go out and BUY this (nor, for what it's worth, any of the acts that day sounding like that). Luckily, The Buckinghams worked on their act/look/sound and we remember them with British Invasion style mop tops and for a couple of years in the late 60s they gave us at least 5 top 20 hits. Then, like so many groups of the 60s, because of managers cheating them and always looking for the 'next big thing' and musical styles changing quickly, they became an oldies act.
Mark, at the time we recorded this we were 16-17 year old kids, and had just gotten together. We had no original tunes, so we did the tunes that we loved, not to compete with the Beatles, but to play just for fun in tribute to them. They have always been our idols. We were having fun.
