  • Helena Norberg-Hodge examines the arc of history from a land-based perspective, describing some of the mechanisms that have separated humanity from community and from the Earth. She traces the trajectory from the time of European imperialism and slavery through to modern-day consumerism and mass media, illuminating the globalizing economic forces that have shaped the story.
Helena posits that we are now witnessing a divergence - a "fork in the road". Even as the global economy continues full-speed ahead into techno-colonialism, there is a "cultural turning" visible now even in the mainstream - a chorus of concerted efforts towards slowing down, scaling down, and reconnecting with others and with nature.

One major problem, I see, is that the very platform we're depending on in order to return to community self-reliance which is *land*, especially arible land, is being bought up by billionnaires in vast amounts as we speak, from Africa to Germany. This needs to be stopped.
