I’ve always loved dittos. It’s a great way to see someone do something sick with your character and then next round do that exact same bullshit to them.
But most importantly, you find a kindered spirit with the same mindset as you. Shout outs to the Millia and R.O.B. players for endlessly rematching and taunting back and fourth after each of us do something amazing.

knowing how to play the mirror match is one of the most empowering feelings, it feels like the rawest form of fighting games where when you're winning you can see how far you've come from just mashing buttons and using simple combos and new ways to use your kit. and then when you're getting stomped you can clearly see what else you can do and how much further you have to go to get better. and when its even its best part of fighting games spaghetti both players trying the wildest shit on each other just to get an edge.

Hello, person from 5:46 here. Just wanted to say I really enjoyed the video and it gave great insight on some ideas in mirror matches that I didnt have before! I wanted to also talk about the mention of defensive mirrors brought up at 8:20. As someone that plays a lot of defensive characters, I personally like the mirror since it feels way more strategic than any other match up I have, since there are so many options for both characters at all times. Also I always have fun watching your videos, and since I am kind of in this one, I thought this is probably the best time to say it. Cheers

I absolutely adore the elliana mirror in rivals of aether, elliana has crazy combo potential and she's huge combo food and very momentum-heavy, and there's also a ton of stuff she can only do against herself, the elli mirror is basically a mess of flying missiles and explosions where if either player makes a tiny mistake they get comboed into the blastzone and die

Weirdly, some games have exceptions with fg mirrors being 5-5. Tekken for example has player side having importance for being able to sidestep after forcing crouch with a decent example being kazuya mirror, same with melee and port priority with some mirrors.

I personally like mirror matches but that is partially because the Anji mirror match has a specific knowledge check in the Fujin/Spin interaction that I like. Fujin can cancel on wiff and swinging into Spin counts as wiffing. Because of this while empty Fujin is minus but a followup can actually frame trap. But then there is the matter of which followup to use as both Fujin and Spin move the characters closer to each other which leaves Nagiha punishable so which followup do you use? Stuff like that is very enjoyable to play around in my opinion (almost as fun as both Anji's doing season 1 fully charged Fujin at round start).

When I struggle in a match it's usually from lack of knowledge about my opponents character. But since the character I know the most in a game will be my main, then it let's me play at a much higher level than what I usually do because I don't have to go out of my way to figure out what my opponent's character can do, which can be a huge problem if they play a character I rarely see

I have an impression that the people who hate the mirror match usually are tied to one of two types of character: characters who are volatile, like the video said; and characters with a very defensive kit. I hate the Axl Mirror in Strive, not because it's volatile, in fact I think it's the exact opposite. Since his kit is mostly focused on long range and stopping the enemy's approach, most of the MU resumes into two apes throwing shit at each other from afar because any try to get close will be snapped away. Sure, if one gets close, then the situation gets exciting, with one trying to sneak in the few close-range options Axl has while the other fishes for a Bomber Loop or a One Vision thing, but sometimes the MU just doesn't reach that point and turns into a snorefest that's probably going to time out. Very little interaction between the two can lead into a MU just as insufferable as an explosive MU that one completely destroys the other.
Meanwhile, if the character is more balanced, without an explosive action, but also without too many defensive tools and reactive zoning, things can be hectic. I honestly love the Hakumen dittos in CF, not because they are neutral based, but because they can be extremely silly, mostly because the defensive tools are proactive. You need to take the guess and use the counter, or else you get grabbed. It turns into an interesting game of RPS between Poke, Grab and Counter where both either play smart and try to catch the other or drink the whole can of paint and do stupid shit.

  • @devilcwesker5980

The best counter argument to latiff(I'm assuming that's player who ranted on twitter) is: If you were truly the best zato player, then you should also understand your characters possible routes and options, every combo in strive no matter how complex can be blocked and countered. You loosing is a simple case of your lack of understanding of your own character

    • @cherfaris
      @cherfaris 2 роки тому +3

No matter how much you understand theres no answer that beats everything. Zato mirror is Simple RPS. If you guess wrong once you’re in the gutter. Its not like a Ky Mirror or a Sol mirror. Latif worded it like a scrub and he did sound like a scrub which was funny but even if he understood everything abt zato u cant block unreactable mix consistently, guess in the RPS consistently etc

  • @JBasilix

To me mirrors are the best experience. No bullshit just pure knowledge of your own character. It simply doesn´t feel unfair since both have the same toolkit. Even if it is a volatile matchup you can´t be salty over a loss since you could just aswell have been the winner if you had made different choices.
While on the topic of volatile mirrors: learn to deal with it. Accept that you are playing a rather polarizing character. The mirror is probably not the only matchup that is volatile or where your character just crushes through sheer offensive power. It only showcases it more. I don´t even want to know how salty these players would get if it was not a mirror and still lost to that character since then they can actually blame the character. And if they REALLY don´t want to deal with the mirror for those money matches then learn a pocket character. Other players do that aswell for bad matchups.

  • @keeshuunedited5678
    @keeshuunedited5678 2 роки тому +1

"people who hate mirror and those who don't".. Honestly it just depends on the character. I love that it's a fast way to improve. However other times some mirror matches you are just playing a completely different game that won't help you anywhere else, and may even be annoying to fight (usually not annoying though).
With that said I have been slowly trying to put in a few matches with my main in Guilty Gear Strive. Main is Jack-O for a bazillion reasons, but since I'm still familiarizing myself with the controls I'm still on floor 1/2 but there's no one ever down there so I'm just sitting in the training lab usually. I also notice that if I go into any other place people take it really easy on me because they see my level is so low which is sweet, but I have played enough games to know when someone stops trying and it's a little annoying sometimes because I can't learn what I should/shouldn't be doing.
I was lucky enough to run into a Jack-O though, and they had some crazy combos that did some crazy damage. However it was rather close. I may not have been able to do combos, but I was able to repeatedly win the neutral and keep them in a disadvantageous position for most of the game. Still lost every game though, and this is a recurring theme with fighting everyone right now. Just gotta learn how to combo.
(I may have gotten carried away with rambling here, woops!)
I mainly play platform fighters so here are some of the dittos of mains I once had:
    Smash:
Link: I've never met another Link that does not spam projectiles. Thus, they are not hard to beat, and I do not get to engage in the wonderful projectile play that drew me into competitive smash. I haven't tried to main belmonts, but belmont players suffer the same problem and it saddens me so much. Stop playing characters in a boring way!
Samus: In Smash 4, it was interesting to see the different combos and playstyles. In Ultimate, it kinda devolves into charge shot spam for most players, but those aggressive Samus players that don't use the projectiles much and only use them to extend their pressure are very fun and scary!
Lucario: Every Lucario I've played is either very bad, or has a bizarre unique way to play unlike any other that just fascinates me. It feels weird to have to be more on the aggressive side, because you need to kill Lucario early or he can swing things back in his favor. Lucario is always intense when he's on the field, but when there's two, you better not make any mistakes.
Meta Knight: Hard to even find a meta knight main, most are bad even if you do find one, but if you are lucky to find a good one, it's one of the most intense experiences because of how fast he is, and you'll be looming around each other waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. The ditto is probably my 2nd favorite matchup for Meta Knight, my most favorite is Meta Knight vs Pikachu because they have a lot of commonalities between them (I may also be biased 'cuz Pikachu main friend is the best Smash player I know, and has been playing since 64 and actually took my advice on stuff so he's so hard to fight now)
Ridley: Out of all my mains I've tried to play, this is basically like trying to have a Potemkin ditto with how most people play Ridley. Everyone wants to do his side B to drag people to the other side of the stage, or just get a cheesy off-stage grab kill. Actual good Ridley players always interest me though, they find a way to make a simplistic character move in clever ways to give him more options.
Sephiroth (current main ever since he came out): 9 times out of 10, it's just me absolutely wrecking him because he's a popular character, but he takes a while to learn how to play properly. That last 1 out of 10 times though just feels so good though. Get to feel each other adapting to each others movements more so than any other ditto because while he may have a lot of sluggish moves, he just has so many options and you can't be ready to avoid every single option he has.
Brawlhalla: I mean, every character feels like a ditto since they are all so similar. I was a Munin main though. I wrecked every Munin I came across because everyone spams the sigs Munin has and expects to win because of it.... Which actually will work pretty well for a long time. Not against me though, since I knew the weaknesses of the sigs, so all the other Munins except for one lost to me in my time playing that game (but that person wasn't a Munin main, just a super good player flexing).
Rivals of Aether: I have not played against someone else playing my main Elliana and probably never will because she's probably the hardest official character. She is currently my favorite fighter to play in any fighting game I've ever played. I friggin love watching Elliana dittos though. Other dittos I've only played with friends to teach them how to play since they don't usually play platform fighters, so too one-sided to say anything about. The "Ryu wannabe" Olympia was among the most fun that I had a ditto with (but that was also against the one person that was already a returning RoA player so he could kick my butt, so a little bias there). I maybe biased towards Ryu characters because it feels like every fighting game has Ryu in it. I played a bit of him in Marvel Vs Capcom on the Sega Dreamcast (wasn't my main there though. that'd be Jin + Strider), and Ryu is a blast to play in Smash.
Multiversus: Honestly, most 1v1s feel really awful in Multiversus because it's so easy to avoid each other's attacks with how mobile, short range, and sluggish the moves are for most characters, but this is perfectly fine for 2v2s. The 3 Assassins Finn, Harley, Arya are all pretty fun because they feel more like what you expect from a fighting game, but are still a tad on the simplistic and sluggish side compared to what I'm used to. Shaggy is similar to the feeling of playing Captain Falcon in Smash so he's good (Cap does it waaay better though). Taz is a shockingly fun mirror match, you're just super aggressive because you both have no range whatsover, and his moveset wants you to press forward and attack. Tornado is a nice casual way to play, but then there's the tasty mechanic which makes you want to aggressively outplay as fast as you can so you can disable your opponent from doing anything so you can finish them off. So when Taz players actually stop tornado spamming and play well, it gets intense pretty fast. Reindog and Tom&Jerry both feel fun for me due to their zoning tools, area denial, and decent moves up close. I blame loving Rivals of Aether, and also getting into competitive fighters because of watching good projectile play between Link Vs Snake in Smash.
I gotta say, the more a character makes you have to play the game (as opposed to the character playing itself) and the more options the character has to allow more different playstyles, the better the ditto.

and always 1 trying to outsmart the other with teleports it basically becomes a dragon ball battle with the characters wasting more time teleporting than actually fighting lol

I love the Captain Falcon matchup, apparently its bad at high level because he just tods himself essentially, but at mid level it's just incredibly wild, both just trampling each other trying not to give the opponent a chance to get their turn again, and since you're both heavy it has big comeback potential

There are some games where playing on certain sides actually makes the mirror match unbalanced.
Tekken has some situations (controller dependent) where sidestepping towards the screen out of crouch is impossible for p2 (iirc)
Also 2P Heart is a full tier lower than 1P Heart in the Fist of the North Star FG, I forget exactly why.

I like my mirror match because it goofy. Though I from a mostly casual perspective I think there good I can tell you the number of times me and my opponent trade with the same move just to go into happy t-bags.

I was in a Sol mirror one time and it was pretty insightful, tbh. I even got the chance to practice my 'reads' and even experienced some fun moments; Round 1, my opponent did 6H (Counter?) on roundstart and on round 2, I thought "Why not copy him?" and *bam* we hit each other at same time on round start. Another time (same player still) we both did 214S at the same time but he held it a bit to long. I think I still have a replay saved from that match.
In summary, I'm more towards the positive side of Mirrors. Can be very insightful or funny to experience, maybe both.

I find this interesting. In smash we aren't really against mirror matches (or dittos as we call them) aside from a few specific cases The most negative feelings I've seen towards dittos (aside from "x character likes to camp so we both just camp") is sentiments like "I suck at x ditto" rather than "x ditto is bs".

I personally don't enjoy mirror matches (because of ego I guess?), but I really resonated with the idea of learning to improve your character doing so. I remember playing BBCF as Azrael vs Azrael and saw this guy used moves in ways I never did as well as combos I didn't know was possible. And after that I simply incorporated those things into my own gameplay and improved by quite a bit afterwards (even if I got fucked up and lost hard)!

Anji mirrors are my favourite thing. I'm barely into Celestial (got in last week) so I'm not rolling with the best yet, but it is a sight to see the stuff those high-level Anji players pull off, even if I'm the punching bag for their new combo or mix. I even had a Celestial Anji kick me out of the challenge a while back, three hundred levels over me, but it was a blast for every second of our matches.

Indifferent. Rushdown characters are fun for mirror matchups. Others, not so much. Pot: Just grapple him, Zato: As previously mentioned, Chaos: Pain, Axl: British Pain, Faust: Hivemind... Or hot potato.

I get where Latif and Togata are coming from because it can be frustrating, but I love the Zato Mirror it so fun seeing 2 Eddie duking it out like some sort of illegal underground animal tournament not to mention seeing both Zatos going for Damned Fang at the same time is so fucking funny, oh and don't even get me started on interactions with Oppose or Break the Law because the absolute bullshit you can come up with is amazing (it's the same reason why I like the Relius mirror in bbcf cuz you can see some wierd ass Matadors or two Duo Bios clashing it's so stupid). Honestly the only mirrors i don't like are with characters i like playing but not fight ageinst, best exemple I can think off is the Nine mirror in bbcf
