Samurai Pizza Cats is a controversial American animated television adaptation of the anime series Kyatto Ninden Teyandee (キャッ党忍伝てやんでえ, Cat Ninja Legend Teyandee), produced by Tatsunoko Productions and Sotsu Agency.
The series originally aired in Japan on TV Tokyo from February 1, 1990 to February 12, 1991 for a total of 54 episodes. Saban Entertainment picked up the North American rights to the series in 1991 and produced a 52-episode English adaption.
But while 52 episodes were produced, initially only 40 aired in the US. Why? In a word... controversy!

Something kind of amusing is that with the proliferation of the internet, Pizza Cats began gaining a notable Japanese fan base. One of them being the show's lead character designer. Disney was sitting down HARD on Saban's properties that they only acquired because they bought The Family Channel from Saban. There was no reason for them to release any of them, and that's why even Fox Kid's properties that Saban wound up owning at the time didn't get any official release. No Eek! The Cat DVD's, you see. And when they did, they left much to be desired. Incomplete, Comedy Central edits of the first two seasons of The Tick with episodes missing, anyone? They did release some of the Marvel cartoons Saban produced, but this was long before that buyout. And they refused to release full seasons of 90's Spider-Man because they thought it would hurt reruns on Toon Disney.

    • @JeffreyPiatt
      @JeffreyPiatt 3 роки тому +16

Disney acquired Saban From News Corp , they had been merged into the Fox Family Worldwide Division that ran the Fox Family channel and the Fox kids programming. Disney only wanted the TV network but Rupert refused to sell it without the whole division since it was all running at a loss and had that Albatross of a agreement with CBN to give the 700 club a timeslot. But Disney hated owning all of the library they inherited especially the Saban one even creating BVS Entertainment to hide the Disney name from being connected to them. There plan was to end power rangers after wild force until some former fox kids staff there saved it. They managed to still cancel it by buying out the EU network to remove the remaining support. For a lot of the older Anime titles Saban adapted the only way there escaping the Disney Vault is for the rights to expire and for the original owner to give to rights to a new company.

At UDON we published the Samurai Pizza Cats Official Fanbook in 2019, which is a direct translation of the Japanese book originally published in 2012. Features artwork, character designs, detailed episode summaries , and creator interviews.
According to the book, one of the reasons that contributed to the strange English dubs was that the Japanese voice actors improvised a ton, so the final product never matched original the shooting script, and the North American team just threw their hands in the air over it. Though it was 30 years ago, I'm sure the details will always be foggy.

As a huge fan of this show in both forms, I'm very happy to see a more accurate description here of how the Saban-dubbed version related to the original: that while being a complete rewrite, it was very true to the series' original spirit. For far too long people have been misinformed into thinking that the original show was something completely generic and boring and that it was only the Saban dub that completely transformed it into a self-aware comedy, while the truth is indeed that it was already like that over in Japan.
As far as toys go, Bandai was the show's main sponsor. They were heavily involved with the show's development, and the inclusion of the giant Nyagoking (Supreme Catatonic) robot was something they forced on the staff late in production, leading to a lot of headaches. The running gag with Yattarou (Speedy) never being able to pilot this giant robot due to some contrived obstacle always preventing him at the last minute was the writers' attempt at payback for this.

This was a really great video. As a long time anime fan, and one for whom Samurai Pizza Cats was a very early entry into her repitroire I'm going to disagree that SPC is "Better". I think they're both great. Dubs are good, subs are good... And SPC fits the tone of the original series. But I think a lot of the Kyatto jokes could land better than they do with the current subtitles, and some of the kyatto jokes do land well and are cut down in unsatisfactory ways in the dub. Particularly the gag near the end where the the city is destroyed by a secondary character after the main character is revealed to be alive.
I realize that some of the jokes in the original resonate stronger with me than the average fan because of my affinity for show runner Satoru Akahori (who has other works blending the mundane, futuristic and traditional notably Sakura Wars and Saber Marionette). But there are moments of queer expression, and outrageous humor that are lost in SPC. But yes SPC is a good adaptation, and the best adaptation we could get at the time really.
Again thank you for the very well researched and well thought out video. I appreciate it as a fan who is trying to dig into this a bit more.

Awesome! I somehow missed this the first time around but I just found out the whole series is on Amazone Prime. Some really great stuff! Treasures like this are why I love this channel. Keep up the great work and thanks!

It w the Yugioh Abridged of cable TV. Been thinking of rewatching it for some time now.
Aside from this & Robotech, Voltron was quite a bit different from 100 Beast Golion & nothing after the first series is canon in Japan.

Man, I tried so many times to catch the two episodes that were missing from the Canadian run on YTV.... they even showed previews for at least one of them in another of the remaining episodes... I recall something about books of ukiyo-e of various characters being circulated, but of course I never got to learn more than that.

I really enjoyed the show when it was aired here in Tucson. I just inherited a large collection of original animation cels, many with original backgrounds, and a bunch of toys and books including doujin, from this series.

I can't be sure, but from what I've been able to find about this show (which I am a big fan of), I have a suspicion that SPC made it's debut before the USA in Australia.
It was shown on the children's cartoon weekly morning "wrapper" show called "Agro's Cartoon Connection" on the Seven Network, Australia wide.
It went out around June 1992 and I managed to record 4 3hour tapes of many episodes.
I also have some TV guide magazine listings that show the dates of transmission.

This was always one of those shows that was a surreal mystery to me before the internet. It never aired on any of my local channels, as far as I know, so when I heard people talking about it, I often thought they were maybe confusing it with Space Cats (a cartoon so obscure that I might've seen two episodes of yet somehow remember fuzzy memories of it). I still actually have yet to watch it, though I fell I need to check it out at some point since I live for these really weird 80s/90s cartoons.

The series needs to be remade to be exactly like the Japanese version, except they work at a pizza parlor in all versions. That layer of meta humor will be a treat for the 5 fans out there.

I caught this show back in the late 90s when I was taking midterms or finals in high school when I didn't have to be there till later in the day. I was hooked then and still am today. I own both versions on DVD (I was definitely one of those people who waited for years for a box set release, too), a few shirts, stickers, etc. and played/completed both the Famicom and translated versions of the game. Cool tidbit for ya about the game's translation: The title screen's music has also been redone to that of the English release, not just a translated script! I'm glad that people are still keeping the spirit of the Pizza Cats/Nyankees alive and well! TEYANDEE!!

The only episodes I really remember well (because I had them recorded) was the one where Speedy and Big Cheese were trying to become the star of a movie, which basically was a Godzilla-type film.
Bad Bird: Sir, can I have your autograph?
Big Cheese: Sure, but it'll cost you a dollar
Emperor Fred, Big Cheese, and Speedy are sick and need the feather of the Goonie bird. It was funny when the main Ninja Crow and Speedy are together and he claims they're brothers.
Polly: Watch your Ps and Qs or an H will fall on your head. An H falls on the Crow's head.
    Polly and Guido: See.
