Always been my favourite line G thank u for your Vblog of this fantastic line and its stations not forgetting the beautiful views of ribblesdale and magnificent ribble head viaduct wonderful 👍🤗
Watching from Queensland, Australia. Tip Top video, mum grew up in armathwaite. Never been there . I got me nickers on me head. 😅 Love the settle and Carlisle.
Hi G, This video was fabulous! I stayed on holiday not far from Ribblehead Viaduct and we took a trip from there to Carlisle, fabulous journey...also bumped into a mate from work there on the same day... There was also shop set up on the North bound platform selling souveniers of the Viaduct marketed by the Friends of Ribblehead...I bought a tie if I remember correctly...I really loved your background music choice, it went naturally with the train movements and also your boundless energy, what is it's title? If I hear it again I shall connect it with your video... Thanks for brightening my evening... Take care, Jon B. x
Midland Railway had dispute about track access with the London North Western Railway (WCML) in 1870 so they decided to built their own line which became the Settle to Carlisle line and would had seen trains from London St. Pancras to Carlisle and onto Scotland. But it is a lovely scenic line, still need to visit Ribblehead Viaduct.... Love a good pair of Viaducts lol Great video G
Your energy and enthusiasm are what make your videos so captivating. So much so you make me want to be there with you enjoying your surroundings. Inspirational, fun and superb entertainment. You are number one when it comes to informative railway vlogs. Excellent work G, keep 'em comin'. Ray x
Your videos are amazing & I enjoy watching them. Heck I really like you & Lucy. One day, you guys got to visit America. One day, I'll like to meet you.
In the days of the old (pre-BR) Midland Railway London was direct from Horton. All the maroon and cream at the S&C stations (and Hellifield) is a throwback to the Midland Railway days. Hellifield was a major station back then.
Rubblehead station didn’t used to have staggered platforms. The station closed, along with all of the other intermediate ones on the line except Appleby, in about 1970. The Northbound platform was demolished to provide rail access to a quarry. When the station re-opened it was served by Southbound trains only. I was quite surprised that they didn’t single the track through the station to enable the remaining platform to be served by trains in both directions; since the track on the Viaduct was already single only a short additional section of single track would have been required. Rather than do this however they decided to build a new Northbound platform. I cannot remember when this was done. I’m not sure if the quarry siding is still there, but it was when the new platform was built so it had to be put in a slightly different location.
Hi G thanks for posting this, another brilliant vlog. That’s such a pretty line with the views & the lovely restored stations. Really is a step back 8n time
Cracking video once again. Funnily enough, I spotted you on someone else's video today standing at Princes Street tram stop in Edinburgh. There's no stopping you, lol
That 333 took me back a few years. I had the dubious pleasure of machining a modification on all the bogie frames as they came through the works for service. I did a dimensional check of the frame and modification of the spring pockets at an average time of 10 hours per bogie. Great video of the line G, I have never been up there yet.
The Line is the part of the original Midland Main Line, which originally ran expresses from London St Pancras via Leeds and on to Carlisle and finally terminating at Glasgow in the British Rail Days. Keep those videos coming.
Another amazing video! I know the Settle and Carlisle from Microsoft Train Simulator. You're video has inspired me to do some research to understand why its so famous! Thank you!
I once diverted to see Ribblehead whilst driving to Newcastle in the middle of winter. It was a decent day weather wise until I got up there and the wind was brutal, freezing cold and sideways rain 🤣 Network Rail were working on the viaduct at the time, they deserved every penny working in those conditions.
What a wonderful railway line with some very beautiful and very charming train stations lovely countryside too the viaduct looks amazing love to visit this area one day great video. :)
Its so nice there. Not been since winter freezing cold, foggy one time too. Got nice shot of train emerging and disappearing in the fog. One time forgot the afternoon train didnt stop st Ribblehead lol. The waiting room on Carlisle side had a heater, but pub was better for roaring fire 🔥
magnificent piece of architectural and structural engineering - I was once there when a steam loco went over - can't remember its name but it was awesome
Very nice. I've done Skipton and Cononley, but I've been meaning to do stops between Carlisle and Skipton for ages and it's simply too far from my parents house for me to do in a day without a 3 hour drive in either direction. I have done Appleby though, as that's where trains terminated when there was the landslide back in 2016, and that's where the first year of the staycation express starteed from. The S&C was the Midland Railway's route to Scotland, after the MML up to Leeds and then up, so that does make sense.
This certainly is the line of the beautiful stations as well as the beautiful views, and of course the beautiful Ribblehead viaduct. I liked those "Settle Down" and "Settle Up" signs I think they should have some bug houses at the Ilkley line stations for the Outer Space Bugs 🤣
The book about the revival of the S & C by James Towler was so critical of the MoT, British Rail, politicians, among others that the NRM refused to sell it.
That was utterly brilliant, I loved every second of it. The Ribblehead viaduct is amazing, so beautiful as to almost be surreal. Coincidentally I have just been watching a video with Matilda River Walden, also at the Ribblehead viaduct. What structures that we have built will still be doing the job they were constructed for, on a daily basis, nearly 150 years from now?
This is your best one yet G, you could spend the whole day just exploring the stations, every one of them a gem, the views are breath-taking and then you have the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct and to top it all off we have your enthusiasm and joy coming through in bucket loads. Thanks for brightening up the day!!! Looking forward to the next one, stay safe.
Hey gg love you very much you are amazing what you do sending you lots of hugs if you are ever in macclesfield it would be nice to meet up for a coffee I would like to do what you do travel around on the trains but I would like to get some tips on it so I know what I am doing. Love you gg xxxxxxxxxx ❤❤❤
At Kirkby Stephen on Settle & Carlisle line there is a Kirkby Stephen East station - a preserved station & railway line Also I rode on the train hauled by the Tornado steam engine from Appleby to Skipton & later back There is a live UA-cam stream of the viaduct & the passing trains by Railcam UK
The last time i travelled on a train in england was 2011 on the gatwick express and what annincredible journey that was other than that i would usually have travelled from inverness to insch aberdeenshire in north east scotland
Lucky you with the weather! I've visited this area twice in the past 12 months, firstly last August (2022) to travel Carlisle - Leeds (with an advance ticket so no stopping), and secondly by car in May (2023) when I was in the North West as I had Eurovision tickets and wanted a day away from the city. Both times the weather was cloudy, views were OK but not great with some mist & at times fog. The country side is very beautiful, lots of great vistas to feast the eyes, the stations etc have a histroric charm that is second to none. In May stopped in Settle for afternoon tea and found a good selection of great little tea shops. I hope to return again one day for a more detailed exploration, and perhaps a little walking too ... when the weather is nice!
Thanks for the video G as everyone said just love this place, the viaduct is awesome, took some building and many deaths too 😢. Been able to take pictures of the viaduct one sunny, windy day,I think I got a class 185 going over it. Would love to live there but so harsh the weather can be!!😎🚃🚃🇬🇧
all the stations in this vlog looks lovely and the views along this line look amazing and Ribbleshead viaduct looks stunning and awesome shot of the train passing on the viaduct awesome vlog
friend introduced me to the viaduct a few years ago. I have a picture of me at the bottom of one of those spans. You have to expand it see me. What an amazing structure!
When I worked for NR we did the conversion of the station masters house to a holiday cottage, also had to carry a 6ft 4x4 fence post over the viaduct to the signal box (the farmer wouldn’t let us on his land as the signaller had been having an affair with his wife 😂).
Excellent vlog, G! The Settle and Carlisle line is one of my favourites too - it would be good if they could get some adapted 153s to use as cycle carriages (like Scotrail do on the West Highland Line) for when it gets really busy. Can we request cover songs on the Limestone Lithophone for the next time you're back at Horton-in-Ribblesdale?
Skipton was even bigger again, because the line from Ilkley and Grassington came in one end, and the line to Colne went out the other, that was another two platforms at least (and, weirdly, it was behind a wall! The underpass you were in, G, was extended to serve these platforms.). Do I get a "thanks, Bob" for this nugget of info?
This is absolutely wonderful timing, I was looking for times for Horton in Ribblesdale but I could only get times for Settle and Kirkby Stephen I think it was, but you have given me the information that I needed, looking to go camping/cycling around but didn't want to stay at Settle as the campsite is mostly caravans and statistics, a bit too posh for me, the camp site in HiR is a farmers field, basic and quiet, great channel 😊
One of my favourite parts of the world - I spent a lot of the 1990s cycling around the Dales national park. RIbblehead didn't have a north platform back then - I don't know when they rebuilt it though. Settle didn't have a footbridge either back then come to think of it. Great video :)
Fantastic video as always
A proper natural beauty 😍
0:55 - ahhhhhh it's my Stalker
Always been my favourite line G thank u for your Vblog of this fantastic line and its stations not forgetting the beautiful views of ribblesdale and magnificent ribble head viaduct wonderful 👍🤗
Great money shot on the viaduct at the end 👍👍

❤ I love Skippy Skipton great place to visit great video x tq
This is you, on your own and at your best. So glad this line was saved. Cheers G. x
Well......the Ribbleshead experience is......perfect. The Station Inn is part of the experience.
I watch you a lot I really do like you ya meck me smile plus I like train as wrll ❤❤❤❤❤
The London sign would be a reference to the Midland Railway who built the line, 242 miles to St Pancras!
Was there last month and there’s a lovely couple that run a tea shop at Ribblehead. The viaduct is stunning!
Happy days gee..love you presentation
Hey, Ribbleshead Station has a luvly visitors' centre with a shop, cafe and museum. It is open til 3 15 ish and till October.
Midland Railway had dispute about track access with the London North Western Railway (WCML) in 1870 so they decided to built their own line which became the Settle to Carlisle line and would had seen trains from London St. Pancras to Carlisle and onto Scotland. Ah thankyou Cyber! Think we both do 😂
Just been there today - it’s a classic!
Awesome Video G Loves Trains
Stumbled across your channel a couple of days ago. Brilliant content
Thanks!
another great video keep then comming
ribblehead viaduct looks an awesome structure to see and photograph
I saw the first station and thought “Things Cononley get better”😀
Your energy and enthusiasm are what make your videos so captivating. So much so you make me want to be there with you enjoying your surroundings. Inspirational, fun and superb entertainment. You are number one when it comes to informative railway vlogs. Excellent work G, keep 'em comin'. Ray x
Thankyou very much Ray! 😀
They used to do days where the line was closed and groups could be taken by foot over the ribblehead.
I Would love to visit one day soon.
Skipping in Skipton maybe a new feature LOL great video as always and such a great line I love to visit.
You could start at Ribbleshead and show the visitors' centre there then go further up the line toward Appleby.
Been there a few times on my Pennine Way Hikes and let me tell you there is nothing is better than catching a Steam Train going over the Viaduct.
Recent subscriber. Love your content and your energy. Hope you can do a collab with Geoff soon
Love this section, running through the 'original' three peaks area...

Great video g love the 158s❤
G loves trains and we love your films and we love you.
Cool video!
Your videos are amazing & I enjoy watching them. Heck I really like you & Lucy. One day, you guys got to visit America. One day, I'll like to meet you.
Great video - a Skipton skip, settling down at Settle, nearly giggling at Giggleswick and loads of Ribble wibble!
Haha thanks!
Great video G as always, platform 5 at Skipton is still there but it’s not accessible it’s behind the wall on the freight line
In the days of the old (pre-BR) Midland Railway London was direct from Horton. All the maroon and cream at the S&C stations (and Hellifield) is a throwback to the Midland Railway days. Hellifield was a major station back then.
Your amazing and thank you for making my day and have a great safe day best wishes and keep up the wonderful work that you do. 🙂
Thanks Josh!
Love old school train stations one thing missing was some steam trains . But amazing
I shall say again, your enthusiasm is infectious. Never change.
Cheers!

Yes, the quarry siding is still there and in regular use. 😊
The cafe at Ribblehead railway station is lovely.
The pathway you were walking on at settle goes to a place called stainforth falls with your favourite thing to look at “flowing water “
Great video G Love

16k well done lovely
great video, very enjoyable.
Wow that’s amazing views from the station in Horton . Great video
What an amazing structure. These were skilled craftsmen who built it for sure. I would love to visit and see it up close.
Thanks for the upload. 🙏
2:51 there's similar subway ramps at Ely station to these. Excellent films by the way 👏

Great job of hyperactive editing! Just in case I was not clear, that's meant to be a compliment.
Excellent video (of course!), wonderful views and I loved the music soundtrack.
Thanks!
Brilliant video G, nice to see you decided to do some skipping at Skipton lol. The ribblehead viaduct looks amazing, I'd love to go there someday. :)

That viaduct is so beautiful and stunning. Such a amazing viaduct on the Settle-Carlisle Line. Plus the scenery is just incredible 🤩😍
What an amazing journey! That viaduct too 😍
Exuberance is inspirational and uplifting, thanks G
