Mfg
Superbe...merveille...subtil joyau...frisson absolu... @neboyd: let you try some words, like you feel ;) Et ce son, de 1947 ! Ouah ! Eglise non obligatoire, zéro reverb, la classe ! Merci Goya1929
Compared to Yepes I think Segovia had the bigger tone necessary for this piece. THe original violin version is has strong violent moments which are difficult to replilcate on the guitar. Yepes just doesn't get there. Segovia phrasing is more dynamic imo. But both players were superb.
I used to own a video (VCR) of Segovia playing the Chaconne. It was not a slide show and was filmed at his apartment in Paris with the Eiffel Tower seen behind him through a window. If anybody out there has a copy of this B&W film please put it out there we will all be very gratefull.
felixrodriguezguitar i think you may be referring to "The Paris Recordings". There are excerpts from this on the Christopher Parkening dvd "Virtuoso performances" but i dont think that included Chaconne.
In his rush to say it all . . . Segovia never forgets where he's going. He recognizes that there are no "sections" to this work, only a single story told in anecdotes meaningfully strung without pause. He plays the first note with all of Bach's life clear before him. Without hesitation, Segovia pulls the thread that weaves the tapestry, every note appearing with the artistically appropriate timbre and intensity to follow the last and set the stage for the next--Bach's life story told in minutes.
Beautiful music, the technique seems much closer in sound to a violin performance . other performances interpret much more as if it were written for guitar. Most interesting and beautiful in any event and displays his genius.
Muchas gracias.
Apocryphal story goes like this: Segovia startled some critic by playing the chaconne very, very fast, almost to the point of sacrificing the music for the sake of a merely pyrotechnical display. The critic questioned him; "Maestro, why did you play the chaconne so fast?", Segovia's response was supposedly "because I can"! Can anyone verify this?
It was about Segovia's transcription of Mendelssohn's "Canzonetta". After a live recital, congratulating Segovia someone from the audience asked him "But, Maestro, why did you play the Mendelssohn so fast?" to which Segovia famously replied "Because I can!" The true part is that he nearly butchered the piece :-) Segovia: ua-cam.com/video/0Zi3BXTWqWU/v-deo.html Bream: ua-cam.com/video/PBbspaPl7HY/v-deo.html
I performed this work for the queen of Belgium (Fabiola) during the seventies. Played it at about half of the speed of this famous recording. The queen and her sibblings didn't mind at all, and she liked it and shook my hands very gratefully. So what is Segovia worriyng about in this speedy version? Sorry but I have to say it in Flemish: diene gast struikelt over zijn eigen vingers. (This guy is mostly tripping over his own fingers).
The greatest classical guitarist playing the greatest piece in the standard repertoire. Can't get any better than this.
One of the best and importands interpreters of all times at any instrument... IMHO
The 1959 version is incredibly elegant and has a very well balanced expression, but this is the most exiting and passionate
Simply the Best ! Segovia showed mankind the soul of the guitar ! xxxxxxx
I'm constantly listening in,divine, unbelievably!
If there is a god in every aspect, Segovia must be the God of Classical Guitar.
I certainly think Bach was the god of music.
Mfg
very difficult piece accommodating by the maestro!! words cannot express by its excellence the best
It's divine! I have been looking for this version for many years
Thank you !
Superb...Just superb
Of course ,,the best ever and ever!!!!
Ufff....Dios....adivinanzza guitarra....maestro....gracias
Couldn´t be better! Haven´t been surpassed!
C est le génie de l interprétation
Thanks for sharing such marvelous performance.
Thank you for uploading this early version of Segovia's Chaconne, which I much prefer to the later one. Superb.
Great and unattainable Maestro Segovia !!! Grande e irraggiungibile Maestro Segovia!!!
His is the most sincere, heartfelt and genuine, moving interpretation of this Chaconne. (Segovia and Christian Ferras).
Segovia owned this piece (as well as transcribing it) Marvelous performance!
I was learning this from the transcription, and after listening to it played by someone who knows what he's doing, I realized I have some work to do.
Beautiful song. The guitar is a poetical instrument.
Maestro.
Incredible! His hand was extremly quick at his fifties.
He uses quite a lot of slurs to get through the faster scalar passages.
Started working on this last week... a decade left to go
No you will be working on it a lot longer than that.
"Practice the Chaconne every day but dont play it until you are 50 years old" - Segovia.

Hahaha this is such a good performance, thank god for segovia and bach
Bach.
Simplesmente SEGOVIA!

No one is best or better everyone contributes, take an ear to Leo Brouwer it is the most baroque version! Music I can hear forever.
Best of all times....

Now that would be incredible to see. Thank you for letting me know that such a film exists.
I think this is it, but no Chaconne

@Mark Lis Would you at least let us know which pieces were recorded at that time? Of course it would be great if you could upload it to YT :)

Well said.
You are a dreamer.
Wonderfull words, to said how great this music is. Your a Poet or a Philosoph.

This is by far the most emotional, dynamic and sensitive version from Segovia. Most moving....but listen to Cristian Ferras too.
Speechless ...
The version of 1959, the one of 1947 here, and I have another version , maybe a much older one.
Always like a tremolo going constant...goodness!
awesome.

Ok, but these tempi are totally un-musically. It's about the same way to say 'why do you mislead the people' ... because I can .........
I wonder if it was really recorded in 1947. It doesn't sound like the source is an SP record.
Rec. December 1946
Sensibilità superiore.....
worths i ever seen
You are one of those stupid people who do not understang anything
Yeah, he got only small brains so reptilian brains, except lizards are way smarter too.
1947 was 2 years after the end of World War II. I wonder how Segovia spent the unfortunate days.
lol segovia using drop d way back then!
No cansa.

Melhor versão 👏👏👏🏅🏆😉
Parkening's Chaconne in my opinion is a much better version.
