"Don Juan Tango" aka Donald J Trump was one of the few new songs that squeaked in to last year’s session. At its best, it kinda reminded me of Squeeze meets The Violent Femmes. It was so new compared to the other songs that we weren’t too precious about it and taped it without too much thinking. It’s probably the most topical song we’ve ever done - mixing headlines and current events, it mentions movements like black lives matter, gun safety, save the climate and me too but with a big lean on how easy it is for trump to start a nuclear war - a very dangerous thing considering his constantly bruised ego. The bridge lyrics are all about the airships that dropped the nuclear bombs on Japan, the bombs themselves, and the eyes of the ghosts that were left behind. 8/ 6 and 9 refers to August 6th and 9th - Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the last thing we recorded at Stinson last fall. Haven’t ever played it live but we’re thinking of a fully plugged in version for the set. Our friend Matthew Perdoni did the art for the cover.
Matt Perdoni, nice work, I love the art!! And, I love the song!! The situation we're in right now, with this imbecile of a POTUS, and the world on the brink, sucks, but I love that you touch on so many of the things we need to be paying attention to here👍 Kudos for the political song coming from Dispatch. The lyrics feel like a State Radio or Chadwick Stokes song, but with more of a Dispatch sound. Very nice!!! And, love that the DS love is strong ❤ I can remember being in the art room, hanging with Mrs Thibeault, and thinking Matt was an amazing artist back then! Great to see all the DS talent!! Hoping you play this live in Boston next month
Post modern Beatles political: much needed. Keep on rocking it guys. (Listen for triple album release on 10/10/18 to iTunes and elsewhere: Andrew Whyte - Music). Much love - AW
I like the sound, but I feel like whether you're conservative or liberal, most people will agree that the whole "Donald Trump bad" thing is getting old.
Apparently so is telling the truth. That's why, as tiring as it is, people need to keep calling Trump out until he is no longer in office. Not my favorite melody but this song still rocks because the lyrics really mean something.
Wow, to come from making The General (great song) to making this crap. Didn't think they would drink the liberal Kool aid, not impressed with the melody either. Unfortunate
I don't think Republicans or Democrats want to go to war, but if someone brings the fight to you then defending our republic is everyone's responsibility.
War is a profitable thing. And we've gotten ourselves into wars for that very purpose under the guise of "protecting our freedoms". And many on the Republican side of the fence are bought and sold by the war machine. That said, the left can be subject to the same thing. Either way, Dispatch has and always will make political/social commentary, especially when Chad's writing the tunes. He's the most outspoken - i.e. his side project, State Radio.
these guys have always been progressives. the general was an anti-war song, taking on progressive beliefs that war is good for nothing other than profit and domestic manufacturing. if all you want are sappy love songs and folk songs whose lyrics have no substance, look elsewhere. you're not finding that with Dispatch.
They've always written politically inspired songs. They've always been on this side of things. If you didn't know that from their previous albums you mustn't be listening.
To be fair, there used to be a split: Chad was on this side of things and Brad was more of a Republican. There's a fascinating scene in the doc on the APB show in which you can see them arguing about voting for Bush or Kerry. It's been really interesting to see Brad's turnaround. IIRC his social consciousness came out of a trip to South America and can be seen now in the charity Love, Light and Melody of which he's president. In a way it seems to have paralleled Chad's original trip to Zimbabwe.

You sure John Lennon didn't write that bridge? Totally Sgt. Peppers/Magical Mystery Tour era stuff.
@@floydpinkerton7954 right amazing

Lyrics are incredibly haunting because there true. Great song, musically and lyrically well put together and match the theme of the song perfectly.

Please fwd to TSCI. I've got troll thumb.
Sick beat and sounded musically awesome, lyrics were a tad cringey though.
I don't think they were.
I think they were great

Good. You are not needed here. Move along Trumpet
The General is an anti-war song. They were liberal then and liberal now.

Severely disappointed in the guys. Good music, bad message.
I'm disappointed in you and people like you

there's a difference between politically inspired and pandering
