She elevates the song; makes it more mature and honestly emotional. This song is usually so sugary, sappy Hudson pulls in low notes and doesn’t overdo the drama to make the emotion authentic.
Mark, you and Jennifer Hudson blew me away. First, don't feel embarrassed when you reveal your emotions to us, your fans. For me it is a direct, personal connection with you. It creates an intimacy of sharing theatre with a friend with no reservations. Thank you for that. This piece had a double meaning for me. That ghost light was a reminder for me to remember to focus on the possibilities of a brighter future in what has become one of the most difficult and frightening times I can remember. As Broadway struggles so many of us struggle to be positive when there are so many forces working against us in real time day after day. Yes, the theatres are dark in dark times yet the single light still burns. It is our beacon and a reminder that we have not been beaten from our feelings of hopelessness and despair. Theatre, just like decency and civility will return. Whew! Now I'm getting emotional. I love theatre in NY and I miss it very much. Back in March I had to cancel my tickets to see Moulin Rouge. I would love to be able to see it but am not sure if it will return to Broadway. That said, I am looking forward to seeing a classic, one of my musical comfort foods THE MUSIC MAN with Hugh Jackman. In closing, I thank you for bringing musical theatre to us during these times. I so very much anticipate your critiques and always your reactions and you did not disappoint with this particular video. You've got a loyal fan here and yes...I voted and I'm sure you know how.
Beautiful post, Roberto -- I feel the same! Also, I definitely hope the MUSIC MAN staging still happens, because Jackman's range, energy and sly cheer is just PERFECT for that. Like, he's probably got the Tony already sewn up.
Look, Jennifer Hudson is our Aretha and our Whitney in terms of shear power, tone, vibrato, clarity, and pitch. The girl had only improved every single day since her American Idol run. Her control... WOW. I just can’t say enough...
Im so glad and emotional that i searched about what a ghost light is, especially nowadays that theater seems to be dying because of the pandemic For those who dont know, a ghost light is a single bulb left burning whenever a theatre is dark, even there are no people in it . Some argue that its function is to chase away mischievous spirits; others insist it lights the way for the ghosts that are said to inhabit virtually every theatre, keeping them happy and contented. Either way, that light ensures that no one takes an accidental tumble off the stage. It might also signify that the place or the theater will be crowded by people again someday, hence why it is still left on lighting the stage Thanks for giving us hope Marc that theater will come back someday
She is a master of song interpretations, I loved when she did that country song tribute to Brooks & Dunn (Believe), people didn't think she could do it, but she had all those country singers in tears. Here is the video link: ua-cam.com/video/u32FO6qNbMQ/v-deo.html
LOVED this video Marc. JHud astonishes me every time with the depth and power she brings to any performance. One would think I'd be used to it by now, but she blindsides me every single time and I adore her for it. Thank you for reacting to this one (as a prior techie and avid theater lover, the ghost light got me, too). As far as local theaters, we have beautiful Bass Hall in Fort Worth, but I am most looking forward to getting back to the Music Hall at Fair Park for the annual Dallas Summer Musicals run. Hadestown is scheduled for May of next year, so my fingers are crossed!
Dang you Marc (and Jennifer Hudson) for making me cry. She is such an incredible singer. Sometimes it's hard for me to believe that I will ever go to a theatre again. I miss seeing kids in the audience all dressed up to see the Disney musicals, hearing the orchestra's first notes, being blown away by a dance number, moved to tears over a character's tragic end, or laughing hysterically at the King from Hamilton. Those few hours of a show take me away from the reality of the world. I truly hope that one day I can enjoy it again.
I appreciate hearing a professional give their opinion about J. Hud's voice. Im so sick of hearing couch critics going on about how "loud" she is or how she "over sings"! 🙄 Coming from the church, every heavy set Black woman in the choir had voices like hers. It's called the anointed! I couldn't agree with you more, i also usually don't care for when people put their own 'spin' on traditional Broadway musical theater staples but she can do whatever hell she wants!😁Its amazing how effortless it seems it is when she opens her mouth! Truly a gift from God, that voice! ❤ (I would love to get your thoughts on her rendition of "And I'm Telling You..." from Dreamgirls or "Soon As I Get Home" from The Wiz! 😉)
There was a time where she wasn’t holding back at all though. I think the last few years if she has learned how to control her dynamics and give and take more. That is better in order to have variety in a song and have somewhere to go, as well as a very good emotional indicator in the song.
When I was a little girl Annie was the first Broadway play i ever say...and to have Jennifer sing this song is earth shattering for me...when she sings she honestly brings tears to my eyes...thank you for this video
My nephew, William is a theater major at Marquette University. I have wondered why he hasn’t pursued something more lucrative, but Marc’s explanation of a career in theater has answered a lot of questions for me. The passion and love for theater that Marc exhibits are touching and convincing. I have been a fan of theater since I was very young, listening to Broadway recordings on my parents hi-if (a vinyl record player for the younger theater devotees). Marc has been an inspiration and a source of deeper understanding of the musical genre.
I love your willingness to show your vulnerability to all of us; it's what makes me such a fan of your channel. In answer to your question about naming a favorite theater...honestly, any theater is my favorite. I've loved shows on Broadway, off-Broadway, off-off Broadway, regional, local, high school, etc. Going to shows is the one thing that my daughter and I completely connect with together and I've missed, with all my heart, sharing those experiences with her. She is a college freshman in a BFA Theatre program. I hope and pray this crisis ends soon so that she can step onto the stage once again, pursuing her passion and be in her "happy place".
Another tour de force from Ms Hudson, and thank you for hi-lighting the set (genius isnt it - less is so so more here) - thats the sort of thing that goes right over my head unless pointed out, and it added volumes to the experience. I want to take you to a show next time your in London Marc! Your pick! So my favourite theatre is The Lowry in Salford, UK - the most comfortable theatre for miles with loads of leg room, the old theatres kill me (6ft 2in). The Royal Exchange in Manchester, UK is an exciting 'in the round' design suspended from huge pillars in an old cotton trading hall - and consistently puts on outstanding theatre. I'm just an enthusiastic life long theatre go-er and miss it so much.
When JHud sings, she takes us to church. She puts a little gospel twang with these intense emotions in her performances and it’s just perfect every time. She’s just phenomenal. Growing up in the city I was spoiled with Broadway and live performances of all sorts. Can’t wait to see the city alive and thriving again. In my current home there is a beautiful theatre (Hershey theatre) that a lot of tours perform at. Excited to support that theatre as well, when the time comes.
Holy cow! I’m SOBBING. I hadn’t heard her sing this yet. It is just the hope and upbeat feel I needed today. Seriously, wow... I do not like the song usually (mostly because it was way overplayed in my youth and seeing too many BAD productions of the show), but this rendition is almost patriotic in its hope and feels. Wow. Thank you so much for introducing me to this!!!
I have always been a big fan of JHud! What a beautiful and powerful voice! It conveys hope and love to everyone in the theater community, not only in Broadway, but all around the theaters of the World! It will come back!
I got emotional seeing the ghost light too. That matched with the empty theatre and JHud's incredible voice is almost haunting. I love seeing shows at the Princess of Wales theatre here in Toronto. But I'm not picky. I was so looking forward to passing my love of theatre on to my daughter early. I know I still will, but I hate having to wait.
@@MarcDanielPatrick I saw Phantom there too a few years ago. It took me way to long to add it to my "seen it" list. I was so overcome by how incredible it was right from the start that I had tears for the entire first act before I could use the intermission to get myself together and prepare for act 2. While I have you ;) have you thought about reacting to something from Avenue Q? Showing actors having to act/sing while also act/sing through the puppets? Could be really interesting! Many of the songs are definitely raunchy but something like "purpose" could be quite interesting to analyze!
I lived in NYC for 10 years - my office looked down on the Winter Garden Theater. I went to a show at least once a month. But now my local theater is the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, CA, where I see all the touring shows that come through. I will be back in the seats as soon as they open because I miss losing myself in the songs and stories. And I hope to be back in NYC soon, again, too! Thank you for sharing the "Tomorrow" message!
My favorite theater is here in my town. It’s full of community members old and young who do wonderful things. We were working on The Scarlet Pimpernel when the shutdown started in March. Having to turn our scripts back in without ever getting to perform was hard. But we’re not going down without a fight! We’re hosting a drive in style cabaret show in the parking lot this month. Keep the faith, Marc! And yes PLEASE! For the love of all you cherish GO VOTE if you can.
I’m actually fortunate enough to be in a Zoom production of an original musical adaptation of It’s A Wonderful Life, and I’m so proud of our cast and crew. I absolutely hurt for the plight of so many of my fellow theatre-lovers who don’t have the same opportunity. Love you all. The sun WILL come out tomorrow. ❤️
I did not expect this level and meaningful emotion when I clicked on your video today, Marc. It was perfect that you just looked at us at the end and shrugged. There were no words needed. Thank you, again, for your authenticity. I live in the U.S., and participated in early voting. I am writing myself into the narrative. On another note...I always smile when I hear your wonderful Canadian accent! 🥰
I love Annie so much, it's the reason why I clicked on this video. I love tomorrow, maybe, it's a hard knock life, and I think I'm gonna like it here. Best songs and always makes me emotional! ❤
I love the head nod at the end, as if to say "perfection", I had the same reaction. Love your content!! I'm learning so much plus I get to listen to lovely music.
I know I'm riding the late train here but better late than never. I'm so glad I found your channel and I've really enjoyed crying along with you to all of these wonderful performances!
I love this song for a special reason. When my daughter was in 2nd grade, she entered a talent show at her elementary school. This was the song I helped teach her to sing. She sung it acapella and they put her first on the show program. It's one of the best memories of my life.
I was seeing two to three shows a month on Broadway pre COVID, it’s been my favorite thing about moving to New York. I hope it reopens before I move away ❤️
Loved the version! I have enjoyed listening to Jennifer Hudson for years! Also loved the way gospel style was infused into the song (loved loved loved hearing the Hammond B3 in the music even though it was subtle!!).
I love Annie and I love this version of this song. Definitely the song we need this year. My first time back to the theatre will be at my local community theatre, the first place I ever saw a show and the first place I was ever in one (5yr old baby elephant in PT Barnum 😂).
That is my favorite musical we used to go when I was younger with my mom's. I go to the Ohio Theater and now this is something my daughter loves and she is going to college for musical theatre. Jennifer Hudson is amazing.
Omg YES! Heres a full circle moment for you, I actually saw a production of Annie at Shea's in Buffalo years ago! Then spent the rest of the night at the Anchor Bar as you do anytime you're in Buffalo. 💕
I miss everything stage... I am a photographer and shoot live performances at High Schools. I miss seeing the kids dance, the school plays, the performing arts centers... dressing up for a night out... My husband is a musician and he's missing his gigs. Loved this rendition with JHud, she's so powerful. And you are right...she makes this and every performance her own. Great post!!!
I got emotional seeing marc look like he was gonna cry. And then I looked up the purpose of the ghost light and got choked up about that too. I know so many theaters waiting to see what's gonna happen to their little industry. And i say it all the time, I miss performing so much. Hell, even small show cases or recitals. Being able to harmonize with someone in real time instead of using apps to record your solo track. :/ It's really really hard not to be able to collaborate in ways that ephemerally transforms a space.
Don't be sorry for stopping Jennifer. I'm here for you reaction🤗 If the theatres are open and I'm able to travel again, I would love to see a play at the Lieve Vrouwe Theater in Amersfoort in the Netherlands. I don't live in my hometown anymore, but that theatre, that stages means the world to me. It's one of my first loves in theatre🥰
That was my favorite theatre when I lived in NYC. So many amazing shows. I treasured seeing Laura Linney in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" and Frank Langella in "A Man for All Seasons," and so much more.
I agree I do not like when traditional Broadway songs are taken to the extreme of runs and messing with the melody. But I will accept it more when the performers are in concert and make the educated choices for the emotion of the song. Just throwing runs into it to make it "cool" or more palatable to younger pop audience is wrong. But if it is part of the musical totally wrong. There it is the character voice that needs to be heard and the intent has to be what is written to convey the subtext. Hard to say what theatre is my favorite. I just want to sit in an audience and enjoy the wonderful intimate experience that is live theatre!
I didn't like this rendition at all. Just too far off the mark for me. And too staggered and mannered. The song didn't build for me at all. It just felt self-indulgent and funereal, not hopeful.
We had tickets to go see Hamilton in London's West end. Two weeks ago. Hoping we get to go as soon as the theatres open up again. As a family we love love musical theatre and feel so much for all these poor people who can't perform right now.our hearts go out to them all ❤️
Marc Daniel, I feel the same... everytime I walk into a darkened theatre, seeing the ghost light takes my breath away. It's an old friend. I am getting ready to AD a community theatre, social distanced production of Songs for a New World. Thank you for these videos.
Can't wait to get back to Broadway. But closer to me in Easton, PA is the historic Pennsylvania State Theatre which is a fantastic venue to see all kinds of live performances.
I saw two musicals at the St Bernards theater and didn’t know they were going to be my favorites to this day. Once the musical and The Color Purple. I need to perform there someday
My favorite theatre is at the local middle school where I'm the drama coordinator. As soon as we can open again, I'm going to have all of my kids -- cast and crews -- re-open our theatre with a party to ritualistically turn off the ghost light. The we're going to start rehearsal.
Currently have tickets to 3 different Broadway shows. We were supposed to have spring break in NYC and see Six!, Mrs. Doubtfire and Beetlejuice (sadly we will never get to see that). I also have tickets to see the Music Man whenever that finally gets to open. We normally see shows at the Kennedy Center in DC or the Hippodrome in Baltimore for tours. But I also see a lot of community and student shows.
I love EVERYTHING about Jennifer Hudson. If you want to hear the regular version of the song, throw on the cast recording. This is magic. I will be back in a Broadway theater enjoying any show I can afford as soon as it opens.
Just found your channel and i am loving it thank you, you have such a deep connection with the music and i really appreciate it, especially as i do the same, there is a uk version of the last five years in the UK on at the moment id love to see what you think of it as i believe they are streaming it, i saw it live and it was such a powerful performance first show ive got to see this year after the shows i was supposed to do got canceled, it was so moving i hope you watch it and love it as much as i do, thank you for the amazing content and keep it up!
Thank you for giving your reaction to so great songs. You said that Les Miserables is one of your favourite musicals. Maybe it's time to make a video about "Master of the house" from 10th anniversary concert. Especially interesting is madam Thernadier's part just before "Master of the house" beginning. She had really rare voice.
The first theather ill come back to is "teatro camilo henriquez" in Santiago, Chile. Is a space that re opened not so long ago after being censored and forced to close because of dictatorship. I can't wait to sit there and just, travel away! Hopefully in a few years I can also go to that teatro but standing on stage! Incredible reaction! loved it!
@@MarcDanielPatrick I'm a big fan of yours. Your videos really teach me a lot about musical theater and I can't tell you how impactful your videos are on me, without explaining my autism. I freaking *ADORE* Leslie Odom Jr. and his song *Wait For It*... oh, it steals my breath *and* my anxiety. It helps calm me down when I'm having a meltdown. I'd never heard the song *Without You* before but watching your reaction and critiquing video, I was left in rapt and stunned silence, and I cried. That was an absolutely *exquisite* performance and song and it moved me. I didn't mean to write you a novel but I just wanted you to know I really like and appreciate your videos and channel. Keep teaching others how to love and appreciate musical theater, you're doing a great job! 👍👍

spot on reaction to the performance. wish you didn’t edit the emotional moments out. your not alone in your feeling and shouldn’t be afraid to let you fellow theater family know that too. non the less great video. Till Tomorrow keep up the great content.
I think whatever song JHud sings, you can bet the emotion is authentic. She knows pain & loss. Being a Chicagoan as she is also. The neighbourhood that she is from is where the term "Chiraq"comes from (Englewood). It is where hee mother and 8 yr old nephew were murdered on the same day by her sister's ex!
Please react to Jennifer Hudson doing all dressed in live from sex and city 1 film. I know it is not theater, but she displays the same passion and joy that she does with this one.
I will go to just about any theater I can get to. I would love it to be one where my daughter happens to land a roll but like you said there are way more no’s than yes’s. She has had a few though. And she keeps trying. So any theater I can support from a HS production to the Kennedy Center to Broadway I’m there !!
We love to go to Playhouse Square in Cleveland. We were to see 50 Anniversary Jesus Christ Superstar. Postponed to next year, hopefully we will then see it. Also, like going to Warner Theater in Erie, Pa. Saw Beautiful there last year.
Hey Marc! Think you can take a look at Out There from The Hunchback of Notre Dame performed by Josh Castille? Just wanted your take on ASL incorporation in theater😊 Love your work and how open you are with your emotional reactions (especially here with J.Hud)💕

Mmmm. I see what you did there with your subtle Hamilton reference, I like it. Haha guilty of the accent yes, I am half American though! *Fun fact 😊
@@MarcDanielPatrick, that IS a fun fact! And....I knew the subtle Hamilton reference wouldn't slip past you!
I sang this for my first ever performance, also at a talent show, in the 3rd grade! Haven't stopped singing since!
Love that story. And this song acapella takes on a whole new meaning and emotional tone.
Shoutout Ohio! I'd love to see your daughter perform if you have any videos?
I hope to once again see a production at our small local theater in Buffalo, the Kavinoky & the majestic Shea's Buffalo. Miss our theatres so much!
Omg YES! Heres a full circle moment for you, I actually saw a production of Annie at Shea's in Buffalo years ago! Then spent the rest of the night at the Anchor Bar as you do anytime you're in Buffalo. 💕
HEYYYY buffalo born here. Shea's 4ever!
Thanks Kathy!
We'll get there Cecile.
I can't wait to go back to the theater it doesn't matter which one.
My go-to theater is the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ.
Shoutout Jersey!
That is ....everything. ❤
I love going to The Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis. Such beauty and a rich history there, I can’t wait to go back again
Me too. Beautiful theater.
And such a music city St Louis isnt it?
@@MarcDanielPatrick it really is. After all this I think season tickets will be purchased by me to support the arts!
Don't be sorry for stopping Jennifer. I'm here for you reaction🤗
If the theatres are open and I'm able to travel again, I would love to see a play at the Lieve Vrouwe Theater in Amersfoort in the Netherlands. I don't live in my hometown anymore, but that theatre, that stages means the world to me. It's one of my first loves in theatre🥰
You heard it here, lets all get to the Netherlands!
💜💜
Roundabout Theatre in New York! I'm a patron there and it is so worth it. So many great shows and I so miss Broadway.
That was my favorite theatre when I lived in NYC. So many amazing shows. I treasured seeing Laura Linney in "Les Liaisons Dangereuses" and Frank Langella in "A Man for All Seasons," and so much more.
Dont we all.
Love Jennifer and love you, Marc! Love everything about these videos and your inspiring insights into the form and industry. Keep that stuff up. :)
Its that energy in the theatre even when theres nobody there. Gives me chills. Congrats on the show, hope it all goes well.
@@MarcDanielPatrick thank you!! I love your videos. Never stop. And if you do virtual coaching I'd be tempted to invest...
Can't wait to get back to Broadway. But closer to me in Easton, PA is the historic Pennsylvania State Theatre which is a fantastic venue to see all kinds of live performances.
youre so great bro, thanks for the bit about the ghost light.
In Illinois, we have The Paramount Theater that rivals anything in Chicago. Can't wait to go back!
Thank You!
I cried so much. Omg.
💕
I saw two musicals at the St Bernards theater and didn’t know they were going to be my favorites to this day. Once the musical and The Color Purple.
I need to perform there someday
Here's hoping you do sir!
The London palladium is certainly one of my favourites. Had the pleasure of returning there a couple of weeks ago.
I wish they had let her sing this song for 2021 Inauguration
My favorite theater is the 5th Avenue in Seattle, where many shows do tryouts. I love that place. Can't wait to sit in Row U on the aisle again soon.
Ohhh The 5th Ave, yes - I've been there! I'm coming too! 😂
My favorite theatre is at the local middle school where I'm the drama coordinator. As soon as we can open again, I'm going to have all of my kids -- cast and crews -- re-open our theatre with a party to ritualistically turn off the ghost light. The we're going to start rehearsal.
For some obvious reasons, I feel you, Marc, more than the performance itself, as much as I love JHud to death.
Jennifer Hudson is incredible and don't forget to go watch Respect movie in theaters Aug.13, 2021.
I will be going to 5th Avenue, Paramount, Moore, and Act Theaters in Seattle once it is safe to watch in person shows.
YES! Love the 5TH AVE! I'll come with you! 😂
I was in tears 😭
I mostly go to the Ordway in St Paul, MN. I miss it terribly but very much appreciate your channel until I go back to live theater.
Beautiful ❤️
Please do ‘With One Look from Sunset Blvd. ‘ Patti, Glenn and Barbra
Just found your channel and i am loving it thank you, you have such a deep connection with the music and i really appreciate it, especially as i do the same, there is a uk version of the last five years in the UK on at the moment id love to see what you think of it as i believe they are streaming it, i saw it live and it was such a powerful performance first show ive got to see this year after the shows i was supposed to do got canceled, it was so moving i hope you watch it and love it as much as i do, thank you for the amazing content and keep it up!
thanks so much
Thank you for giving your reaction to so great songs. You said that Les Miserables is one of your favourite musicals. Maybe it's time to make a video about "Master of the house" from 10th anniversary concert. Especially interesting is madam Thernadier's part just before "Master of the house" beginning. She had really rare voice.
Its a great number that I will get to soon for sure.
Incredible reaction! loved it!
When they open, I'll go with ya! 🇨🇱
The Carolina Theater on the UNC Chapel Hill campus is where I go. This song is so beautiful!
Shoutout!
@@kerrismith8144 Awww, thank you so much Karri. Comments like this truly mean the world to me. Thank you for sharing your story.
Temple Buell Theater in Denver is the one I want to support more (and I have a wish list going of what I want to see)
Theater is what I miss the most and I know we will come back
play that song at my funeral omg
The Guthrie and Orpheum in Minneapolis. I can’t wait to see live theater again!
Shoutout to Minni!
The Buell Theatre in Denver. This is after living in Manhattan for 25 years, Denver is a GREAT theatre city.
Really? I've been there and had no idea. I do remember walking past a huge theatre near the highway though...I think? Is that the Buell?
My favourite theatre and the one I frequent the most is Capital Theatre in Sydney.
Shoutout 🇦🇺

We don't get a long of broadway in Oregon, but I have seen Rent and Mama Mia in Portland at the Keller Auditorium
Hale Center Theatre, Orem! So intimate and so great!!
Reminds me of how Sinatra changed send in the clowns for me forever. Frickin brilliant.
spot on reaction to the performance. wish you didn’t edit the emotional moments out. your not alone in your feeling and shouldn’t be afraid to let you fellow theater family know that too. non the less great video. Till Tomorrow keep up the great content.
The Springer Opera House is Woe Nelly Media's family!
PREACH, Baby, PREACH.
I have hated this song all my life . Then J Hud is so masterful that she transforms rancid cheese into caviar. I love her.
Also, I sing ‘Tomorrow’ to my 4yr old all the time.. however, she looks at me like I’m crazy 😜
Please react to Jennifer Hudson doing all dressed in live from sex and city 1 film. I know it is not theater, but she displays the same passion and joy that she does with this one.
Could you do something from the newer Annie movie? I feel like it was super underrated, and I love it so, so much.
I'd love to see you react to the LeBaron family and their singing of one day more :)
I will go to just about any theater I can get to. I would love it to be one where my daughter happens to land a roll but like you said there are way more no’s than yes’s. She has had a few though. And she keeps trying. So any theater I can support from a HS production to the Kennedy Center to Broadway I’m there !!
Well said Judy.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
