1991 Belmont Stakes - Hansel

  • Hansel survived a tingling stretch duel with Strike the Gold and won the 123d Belmont Stakes by the length of his head yesterday at Belmont Park.
It was five weeks after Strike the Gold won the Kentucky Derby and three weeks after Hansel won the Preakness, and their rubber match was in doubt until the final stride as they charged through the homestretch before a roaring crowd of 51,766. And, as they raced home, Hansel managed to cling to the lead by a head over his fast-closing rival in the tightest finish in the Belmont since Affirmed edged Alydar by the same margin in 1978.
It was a day of redemption for Hansel, and also a day of big bucks. In his last five starts, the 3-year-old colt raced on the medication Lasix, a diuretic used to control bleeding but banned in New York State. In running a demanding mile and a half in 2:28 flat under Jerry Bailey, Hansel won the closest and most important race of his career without medication.
"His heart got him home," said his trainer, Frank Brothers.
Chris Antley, who came within inches of snatching the lead with Strike the Gold after his horse ran 11th and last for nearly a mile, said in a simple lament, "I just wish it was a mile and a half and four jumps."

R.I.P Hanzel (June 13th,2017, 29 years old)..beautiful horse won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes..oldest living horse to have won both those races..Oddly enough Hanzel was the favorite to win the Kentucky Derby but finished 10th..

Twenty six years later, Richard Migliore, Chris McCarron, Jerry Bailey, Pat Day, Angel Cordero Jr, Julie Krone and Michael Kinane are all retired from the races. And Chris Antley died on December 1, 2000. I miss them a lot! Thanks God youtube exists!

hansel is one of the most underrated horses of the 90s. bailey could not stop raving about his heart and he knows a thing or two

its like nothing he did after the derby flop could make up for it. almost like it got personal, like he broke their hearts.

I agree fully. Set records back to back in the Spiral and Lexington stakes before flopping in the Kentucky Derby then came back and ran really nice Preakness and Belmont stakes. Horse that put Jerry Bailey into the dominant position he would enjoy for years to come.

I believe Mane Minister still owns the distinction of being the only horse to finish 3rd in all three triple crown races.

True. That was not the enthusiastic Dave Johnson that we are used to hearing.

Antley screwed it up, there was plenty of room on the inside, no need to go 6 wide!

Strike the Gold's trip was so wide he just ran too long to get there in the end.

My favorite horse ever! Went to Turfway and nailed him in the Spiral over Richmond. Unloaded my biggest win bet ever $300 on him in the Kentucky Derby where he threw a dud out, but did well in the Preakness when he went off 15-1 or so, then got him again at I believe 7/2 or 9/2 in the Belmont. He was all heart and a handsome, athletic colt with cannon bones to die for.

Hah. Heard Dunkin’s call and he is biased, much like (nasal) Denman and his biased calls for Zenyatta. Durkin: “1 last powerful thrust…”…oops. Strike the Gold was proof positive far too much emphasis is put on the Derby and everyone wants them to be super horses.
