I love seeing the research and details in each video. I’m definitely recommending your channel to everyone I can. Keep up the good work! 👌
This video has inspired me to create random mathematical formulas for extremely specific and miniscule goals in games that don't involve catching monsters in the wild to make them fight other wild monsters.
An important detail was left out: how many times would you have leveled up? Assuming a wild level 100 Hoppip gives 1057 EXP, and Totodile is in the Medium Slow experience group, that would bring it from level 5 to level 12 and its Attack from 16 to 31. Another victory would result in three more level ups. Pity it’s not Gen V or later, or the level difference would result in a lot more EXP.
Man, why aren't all math principles taught in terms of beating a level 100 hoppip? You explained the math very good, I am astounded at how long it is, it must've been hell to write
Was talking to my brother about damagage formulas today and I remembered this video so I showed it to him, and he wanted to figure out what the highest level hoppip you could defeat with a Lv. 1 Totodile in the best-case scenario. So we did some calculations, and you can actully come very close by doing up to 204 damage to a Lv. 98 Hoppip (176 HP) without even using Hoothoots if you Leer 6 times. Lv. 99 is when the defense integer increases and it becomes impossible.
On the path to discovering a way to beat pokemon 95 levels higher than yours, he went mad pouring his remaining sanity into doing manual damage calculations. He may not have discovered what he was looking for, but he uncovered falsehoods in a fanmade calculator and a wiki article for a 21-year-old game.
Thanks! I'm trying to get better and better at it, but I am super proud of that part specifically. I spent a HUGE amount of time on the visuals, and it came out great!

I hope you grow your channel to insane heights, because you deserve at least 10+ times more views than what you are getting, you have just earned a fan.
I'm glad you seemed to know beforehand, that the older console systems truncate decimal values after each division. I ended up running into a weird problem in Secret of Mana, where the expected chance to hit via the known formula did simply not line up with the actual numbers during testing. And it took us way too long to figure out, that each division step truncates decimals Fascinating video, thank you for taking us on this journey, it was quite the ride :)
nope I didn't know that until halfway through this research. I mean I guess I assumed it had to be truncated at some point, just didn't know when. It makes sense that it's after every division now
I mean, if I had to guess how you did it, and since you have already made it clear that save scumming is fair game... You simply picked another wild pokemon with more than 1 move, including one that can miss, and attacked it before struggle became an issue. You picking Splash because then hopip does nothing was always a red herring from the start, you could already make pokemon do nothing even if they are using moves, just with the tools you allow yourself. Caterpie, for example, lets you land a total of 75 moves before it struggles, which means that if you can get it low enough in just 75 moves that it kills itself, you can just switch a pokemon you want leveled for a sacrificial lamb, attack 74 times and get it when caterpie inevitably knocks its target and itself out. Of course you wouldn't have pokemon that can attack 74 times, so that number lowers further with each required switch out, but your primary goal is to get the caterpie low enough that it knocks itself out from struggle within 5 moves (since you can only have a team of 6). I say Caterpie, because that's the only pokemon I know for a fact has 2 moves, but I dunno if that was the choice.
Good guess, but it's even easier. You're right about it being a red herring; I didn't want to lie and appear stupid so as to totally ignore the strategy along the lines of what you're saying. The reason I made this video is because I had spent around 6 hours researching it, then found a WAY easier method, but had spent enough time on Hoppip so I was like fuck it let's see. I did not foresee that it would take an additional 44+ hours to complete. But yeah, your strat would probably work, but it's not worth it because there is a WAY easier method.
