Also they are largely aware of the anti Italian ethnic discrimination many of their forbares received. It was bad and not comparable to being apposed to allowing mass illegal immigration from across the world and then denying it. The immigration of 100 years ago was open and legal, and then it mostly stopped not because the demand stopped nor the supply, but do to the immigration act of 1924. That's what put a stopp to it, that and actual enforcement of immigration law. And these communities mostly accepted it though some complained, and they became Americans.
They would have to establish their own Police, Fire, and Sanitation Departments. They would have to establish their own school system, Parks Department, Building Department, Department of Environmental Protection, etc., etc. Wouldn’t they?
What about NYC civil servants that currently work for those NYC agencies, but in Staten Island. What happens to them?

It's not really part of NYC. The only way to access it from the rest of city is by ferry or the Verazzano Bridge which is cars only, no pedestrians or bikes. No subway system. Jersey City is more connected to New York City than Staten Island is.

You can also get to Staten Island by Bus. There’s several routes that run between Staten Island and Manhattan

This was when the city was still extremely young, in the midst of development and when the entire "city" area was still separating/separated into its individual parts. We can all Google this info -- it is not rocket science. Different time -- different circumstances. You cannot rubber-stamp decisions made in the past onto current events and situations related to the present and future.
This is so stupid you cannot help but laugh... Upstate NY is -- UPSTATE in the state of New York (which additionally includes any county of New York outside of NYC within the physical state of New York -- NYC (New York City which includes its five boroughs) is the one city not physically connected to its state. For those living in NYC (New York City consists of the five boroughs of NYC: Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Staten Island).
It appears that you don't even realize that you suggested that the STATE of New York should secede from New York City. What sense does that make? A state cannot secede from a city. A bit of common-sense thinking can go a long way. Just saying -- and we can debate on the facts.
Manhattan literally subsidies the state. Hell Staten Island gets more in tax services than they pay in taxes.
Upstate would literally become a shithole over night. NYC AND LONG ISLAND FUND THE REST OF NEW YORK STATE OUR TAX DOLLARS SUBSIDIZE THE ENTIRE STATE

This comes up every 10-15 years or so. There was a referendum on it in the 90s and SI voted to secede and it was never mentioned again.
They got to get their emergency resources in place e.g. snow removal, etc etc...

I deal with the 9/11 victims every day and majority of the FDNY firefighters i speak to are from Staten Island who put in the absolute most work when 9/11 happened. You quite literally know nothing it seems. Its ok brother

They should. Politics aside, You have to either take a toll bridge or a boat to get there for the "city" and its not included in subway system. It is more detached from "the city" than freaking Jersey as far as I concerned.

As an American who lives in the South, Ive always gotten the impression that Staten islam is more or real, regular America made up of working class & middle class American families many of whom are religious not atheist like Manhattan. If I’m wrong about that, please correct me & give me a better understanding of Staten Island.
Everyone who lives in staten island for the most part is blue collar. Union, FDNY, NYPD, DSNY etc. including women as well.

@thomasjorge4734- i think that will ultimately happen but the first step is to get out of nyc. once they succeed and have been on their own for about a decade or two they will see how liberating it is and probably take steps to join jersey whom they are almost touching and are culturally similar too. in reality they always should have been part of new jersey. new york will really feel seperated from them once they leave nyc hence they will approve a jersey merger.

This would be a horrible decision if it were to go through. I understand the grievances locals have pertaining to some of the policies spearheaded by Manhattan and the neglect City Hall gives to the Island, but I think if anything the best parts of Staten Island should serve as a role-model for NYC.
There are many whose families have ties to Manhattan in one way or another from Staten Island and vice-versa. The same can be said about Brooklyn and etc... There are also people who rely on the Staten Island Ferry and the public transit infrastructure (as well as regular / student metro cards) to get back and forth whether it be for school, work, volunteer work, to see friends and family, other leisurely pursuits, etc...
Seceding from the rest of the City is an understandable gut reaction for some, but overall I think there will be quite a few negative consequences down the road that by the time we come to regret them it might be too late.
Let's try to improve NYC and Staten Island I think contrary to what some in other boroughs think / say, has a lot that can be used as a template for improving the city as a whole, which desperately needs a comprehensive strategy that can be implemented in the near-future and provide tangible, positive results.

SI has tons of city workers that are dependent on city jobs and while I get that there is a divisiveness over the topic. SI is too reliant on NYC. It’s just island culture and a homogenous demographic (more than half are of Mediterranean descent) that creates this uniqueness.

Promoting the secession of SI is insane. There is so much to think about if this action was to happen. How will SI be supported in social services and infrastructure, for example?
It may feel good at the moment to say, "I'm mad about this -- that -- or the other, and so we should secede!"
But at the end of the day hopefully, common sense will prevail.
