  • We hiked Munra Point on March 1st, 2015. The hike is 5.8 miles roundtrip and gains just under 1,900 ft. of elevation gain. We started from the Wahclella Falls Trailhead, which is located off Exit #40 from I-84 East in the Columbia River Gorge. There's another route that starts from the Yeon Trailhead.

    RIP Annie Schmidt.
    Found this vid while reading about her disappearance. It's a beautiful spot but far too dangerous with that steep of a slope. Maybe someday they'll put up some safety cables or close the trail head entirely with warning signs outside of the summer months when it's a little safer to climb these unmaintained scramble trails. Great vid and you were wise to bring more than two people with you for this hike. Lived here all of my life, 36 years. The forests and rivers in Oregon can be dangerous places.

    @1:27 you're brave. I hope the area is still like that. All the wildfires are ruining our gorge.

    Well done video... you really captured the feel of the terrain and the music added to rather than distracted from the cinematography. It's been years since I was up there. Need to get back!

    I don't know if we hiked the wrong trail mid-way but it was so difficult trying to get up the clay areas we had to use ropes and tools, in this video it looks fairly easy for you guys

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  9 років тому

      asdvs wadv Interesting! We had a very easy time getting up there. There was one small section of rock where a rope was already in place so people could use it to scramble up. I know there's more than one way to get up so possibly you took a side trail that was much more difficult

      Steven Loos I guess me and my friends must of hiked the difficult way hahaha, it was full of clay, we were slipping every step, we had to tie ropes on trees to climb, thanks for the response haha

    Well done for your first video, seems like you've had experience editing, what software are you using? Is the camera and stabilizer heavy to carry or difficult to hike with? I was looking at the one for the Gopro, but wasn't sure. I'm currently building a drone for arial footage. There are some waterfalls down the canyon west of Munra Point I wanna visit with some friends, but as you know (due to the steep factor) they're very difficult to access. It will be a work out to say the least as Munra by itself is. How was the poison oak on your way up? I haven't been since last summer.

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  9 років тому

      I use premiere pro Cs6 but the editing was very basic and could be done with most software. The camea is pretty small cause it's mirrorless. The stabilizer is fairly big. It was a pain to carry but totally worth it for the smooth shots. I'd be curious to see how a gopro stabilizer works. If you find one with good reviews I'd go for it! I saw a tip online: if you have a pole, place it between your fingers and let the gopro rest on your palm (the weight of the pole somewhat counterbalances the gopro and makes it better I guess.
      A drone would be awesome! But right now im too poor to buy one and too busy/dumb to build one myself . Let me know how it works out! I didn't see any poison oak on my hike. It was probably too early in the season. But I just saw some across the river at table mountain the other week

    cant wait to go here on my trip to oregon... do you think its safe to go alone? .. also any other places you recommend?

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  7 років тому +1

      Well, in my opinion, if you're new to an area, it's never a great idea to hike alone. But depending on your skills, it's a pretty straightforward hike. Not as steep or dangerous as it seems, but accidents DO happen there often. Angel's Rest and Multnomah Falls are very popular hikes with great views that would be much better solo. Oneonta Gorge is short/crowded. Have a good trip!

    I try to put this hike on my GPS and it took me to the wrong one...

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  9 років тому

      +Tony Diaz I never really use GPS in the gorge because there are so many trailheads and things can get confusing. I just head east from Portland and take exit 40 and find the Wahclella Falls Trailhead. Hopefully you can get back out there and find it!

    How long did this hike take?

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  8 років тому +1

      I don't remember exactly. 3-6 hours round trip seems typical depending on your hiking speed but we may have taken longer since we stopped a lot to film and ate lunch on top

      i'm pretty slow and not in the best shape and it took me 4 hours RT with a decent amount of time at the top to check out all the ridges.

    I'm planning this hike in 2 weeks. How difficult was it finding the trail?

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  8 років тому

      +Mark Mott From what I remember, at the trail head, there are two trails. We took the one to the right (forgot what trail #) that passes over a small bridge. That kind of travels parallel to the hwy for awhile then cuts left up a smaller trail. The left turn was the easiest to miss since it's not marked very well, but you'll know if you go too far because you find another bridge. I'd suggest looking up the hike on nwhikers or oregonhikers.org, and print out the descriptions along with a good map. Lastly, a friend of mine hiked it 2 weeks ago. There was snow/ice up near the top. Maybe it's warmed up quite a bit since then and won't cause problems, but it's something to look out for/expect

      +Steven Loos got the print out from NW Hikers and read up in a few books but the instructions seems confusing so I thought I would ask. Great video, I've been sharing with those going with me and everyone loves it. What song is used btw, love it!

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  8 років тому

      +Mark Mott Yeah the instructions aren't great, but I think they make a little more sense when you're on the trail. Just keep a look out for the "trail not maintained" sign that leads uphill. The song is "One Day They'll Know (Odesza Remix)" by Pretty Lights. Enjoy the hike!

    Uh, nope.
    Many places like this, they have safety cables. But not Americans.

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  7 років тому +1

      You're right! Some places in America have cables. Like Yosemite for example. I think this hike is not as steep as it looks in the video, but cables would be nice in some sections (there's actually one rope for the steepest part)

    Dang you guys suck, only because your video is better than mine. I made a video using a Gopro Hero2 years ago, and it was in my opinion the best video out there on this hike. I really liked how you filmed down the branches of the trees. Everything flowed nicely too, the song choice was great as well. Nicely done, one question... what kind of camera did you use? How did it turn out so smooth?

    • @mediumsteve5
      @mediumsteve5  9 років тому

      Haha thanks! Its funny cause i looked up other videos on this hike before i posted mine and never saw yours. I just watched it though and it was great. I need to add more gopro footage to mine next time! I have a sony A7S. However i kinda dumbed down the quality of the camera (it was my first video). I used a glidecam stabilizer for a lot of the shots and in some cases i had to add some extra stabilization in editing. you can tell on some of the shots because theres a bit of warping on the image :(
      Like your videos though! Makes me wanna create more
