I love my HOWA. It was my first 308. And will be my only bolt action 308... unless someday I can afford a Barrett MRAD (suppressed) which would be about a 10k setup 😬. So barring a winning lottery ticket, I'll stick to my HOWA 1500.
My long range 308 is also a Howa 1500. I put mine in a GRS Bifrost stock. After I shot out the factory barrel ( about 8K rounds) I replaced it with a. 11.25 twist McGowan 24 inch Heavy Palma barrel. I went with the Area 419 Hellfire match brake. Because of the bottom metal I chose. I hade to mil the back of the receiver but it was pretty easy. The AICS mags now run flawless. My McGowan was a shouldered prefit and it headspaced perfect. When I do my 223 Howa, I may try a barrel nut setup just to give it a go.
Glad to see this rifle being covered. I’ve been looking at the 223 in a short action (not mini) as a trainer. Looking forward to seeing this project going forward. My Howa in 270 is a nice hunting rifle. -Isaac
Awesome Rifle!. Do you mind if I ask you what is overall length of the rifle and barrel length? I am going to build a similar one, but have limited space in my safe. Thank you in advance!
Dead Dude & Some Guns - Thank you for making both of these videos. If I may ask, once the Howa was in the KRG chassis with scope mounted, etc., where was the balance point? Any information you could provide would be appreciated. Thank you. Take care -Phil
great review. did you torque the howa action to the KRG specs? the reason I ask is when I torque'd my Howa action in my MDT chassis, I torque'd it to the MDT spec of 65 in-lbs but found I was shooting Federal Gold Medal Match SMK 168 gr at 1.20 MOA... which is over Howa's MOA spec guarantee. Did some research and found out I stressing the action and torqued the action screws to 55 in-lbs and I measured 0.70 MOA. what did you torque your action to?
Do you have an issue with the bolt not chambering a round without the round getting hung up first try? Hope that makes sense. I have the 1500 HCR and it’s a tack driver but isn’t stripping the round correctly.
I'm using a BOG hunter tripod in this vid, in the process of upgrading to Two Vets. Depends what you're using it for and what you're idea of "budget" means.
@@ADudeAndSomeGunsappreciate you. They are both sold out. I have a howa 1500 hogue with the old sling stud mount. I found a BOG Carbon Fiber model for about 200 and just went with that. The clamp head would work best for my set up now I guess. What you think?
@@Kidkaos13 honestly I'm usually using 12-16x magnification for most targets 1000 and in. It's nice to have 25x in order to get a look at targets or for shooting groups, but I've got a fixed 10x SWFA scope that is still solid at 1000 yards. Check out Arken optics. I picked up one of their optics and I think it may be the best package for the price right now.
@@Kidkaos13 if you want to ever use it for any competitions, go 6-24, for a gas gun setup, the 4-16 will work. I've got the 6-24 and its quickly about replace my vortex Strike eagle 5-25x

howas are underrated
Fantastic! Always appreciate a Quality Howa Rifle! Cheers!
Welcome back! Enjoyed your content a while ago then you disappeared!
I have been thinking about getting a Howa and setting up a fun build in a Boyd’s stock. I think based on your video I’m gonna give it a go
Thanks for the video. Its not a "budget" setup but happy you think it is :-)
This setup minus the scope is still less than a custom action alone.

I'm pretty sure there was one forward of the magwell. I couldn't tell you exactly where.

I get it to between 55-60. That could be a future video, different groups with different torques....

what mag are you using, and are you only using one mag, or does it have issues with others?
Looking forward to this series! What do you think about the predator in 308 compared to howa?
Left in stock configuration, I’d prob still pick up the howa. But if I was hunting I’d grab the predator. 2 different barrel profiles.
You rate the vortex strike eagle ? Over the viper pst
What velocity are you getting with the 175s? What length barrel?
24”. Avg 2606 FPS
@@ADudeAndSomeGuns surprised to hear it isn't faster. I have a 20" howa that I reload for and I push 175gr bullets at 2540fps with pretty mild loads👍🏼
What tripod do you use ? What are some good budget tripods?

Can someone tell me the thread size on this rifle?
