I remember this movie always being classified as a comedy at the movie rental store. As an adult, when Faye (Jessica Tandy) would mention her son, Bobby, around Frank (Hume Cronin), it was heart wrenching considering what is revealed later in the movie. On top of that, since Faye was getting a bit senile, she kept mentioning it again and again and you could see Frank's face as his soul dies a little more each time. Amazing acting.
Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronin were 2 of the greatest husband and wife actors/actress duo ever! RIP to them both they were a big part of my childhood movie role models!
Now this is a forgotten classic. RIP Elizabeth Pena, Hume Cronin, and Jessica Tandy. Where I grew up I never witnessed true kindness, always a cynical kindness. But this film illustrates to me what altruistic kindness can be. Yes, it's fiction, but I think it can be a realistic standard to which we can aspire when called upon.
F L yeah Michael Carmine was the most tragic because he was only 30 and died of a heart attack. He was a good actor and would have been in so many more movies if he was still alive
Man, thank you for this. It's my favorite childhood film and I've been watching it since it first came out. I grew up in a broken home and this was my escape into another world. Years later, this film would resurface through out my life and the most interesting of times. Sad to think all the actors except for Dennis are now gone. I cherish this classic
Right!?! When my wife and I started dating (she's 4 years older than me), I couldn't remember the name of this movie, but knew I had it on DVD. She looked at me like I was absolutely insane when I was trying to describe it to her. After I found the DVD and the movie started, she knew exactly what movie I was talking about and she couldn't remember what it was called either. We actually watched it last weekend together. First time either one of us watched it since we were dating. Good times...
I always felt sad for the Jessica Tandy character who had dementia and kept believing that one of the thugs that was trying to push them out of their home was her dead son Bobby whom she really loved and missed.
Not kidding… as a kid… during the end scene where she's in hospital and Carlos comes around with flowers… when she finally realizes that Bobby is really dead.. i actually teared up… Still do… It's just so bittersweet when Carlos earlier played along to safe her from the burning building and pretended to be Bobby…… redeeming himself and showing that he was not simply a black&white antagonist but actually was a good guy.
Especially after she has a moment of clarity and he's genuinely trying to save her. Then her sadness afterwards when the husband trued cheering her up by saying "look, here's Bobby" ugh it's all so heartbreaking.
I know. I was hoping nobody would mention it. That scene still gets to me. I'm glad Carlos turned out good. I really wish the last scene had been BTW her names Faye had been with her husband and neighbors saying I love all of you and I'm home. I guess well just have to assume that happened behind close door as the robots were flying off.
It makes the beginning of the movie that much sadder, when you realize Jessica tandy's character is strolling through a neighborhood that doesn't even exist anymore, only to arrive at a grocery store with her cart to go grocery shopping at a store that's been demolished, and then returns back to the diner like nothing happened.
Yeah… As a kid i found this confusing. Looked like a warzone while it was just a document of the destruction of the old part of New York. I think it was a part of the Bronx they tore down that can also be seen in Jim Jarmush's "Permanent Vacation" and Stanley Kubrick's "Killers Kiss". Jessica's character is also a portrait of dementia. Something that i only realized years later :( Which makes it even sadder. When she claims she was shopping and yet her cart was empty.
A few years before this movie came out, we were having a lot of money troubles that gave me anxiety dreams that involved shopping for food in a run-down store and having everything disappear from the shopping cart just as I went to pay for it. That part of the movie brought back the creepy memories of those stupid dreams.

This was such a neat movie! I saw it when it came out in theaters (along with Empire of the Sun that same week) and just enjoyed the heck out of it. I liked that the movie didn't pretend to be anything more than a cute and lighthearted sci-fi piece, which of course annoyed critics, who seem to think that everything must be some grandiose epic. It's worth noting that Driving Miss Daisy came out two years later, almost to the day, and really showed Jessica Tandy as a veteran powerhouse of an actress; some critics suggested that she be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for Batteries Not Included because she was old and wouldn't be around forever, her performance in DMD proved she could EARN the award on her own merit.
I'll always remember Elizabeth Peña as Rosie from "La Bamba" and as the voice of Syndrome's assistant Mirage from "The Incredibles." Was saddened when she died in 2014; she was a good actress. =(

Yeah, it's odd. I saw (a potentially censored version of) this film on the Disney Channel. Aside from a couple of gratuitously racy bits, I consider this to be the rare "kids' movie" without any actual kids in it.
I love this movie and I'm glad you did a review on it but I'm disappointed you didn't even mention Faye's dementia. Not only does a large part of the plot revolve around and rely on it, but it's also a really heartbreaking look at what happens to many older people. Not only that but it's so accurately and sensitively portrayed, at a time when much less was known about dementia, and older people who suffered from it in movies were much more commonly portrayed as wacky/off their rocker. In that sense this movie is really groundbreaking and it's a shame you didn't explore that aspect.
I've got the DVD, and have watched it, a dozen times at least. There's one bit that always gets me, every time, a true Spielberg moment - when the four aliens come into shot, and then the view pulls back and shows a few more - and a few more - and a lot more … every time.
This film holds special meaning to me as along with Explorer's and E.T, I remember actually going to the cinema with my mum to watch it. I'm 42 now and those were good times. Great video Minty.
Nice video, Minty. I remember '*Batteries Not Included' often seemed to turn up on Bank Holidays (public holidays) here in the U.K. in the late 1980s/early 1990s, and whilst it isn't one of the big '80s classics such as 'Ghostbusters' or 'Back to the Future', it certainly is a cult 80s movie and very likeable. I recall mute boxer Harry being my favourite character. I think much of what makes it work is that it isn't just an aimed-at-kids movie, but where it features more senior actors gives it a real sense of gravitas and charm. In fact, I don't think there's one child in the entire film that I recall. In that sense it has appeal on a far wider scale; in fact, I remember my grandmother saying she sat and watched it when it was on TV once and really enjoying it. I remember several reviews at the time, when summing up the "folks being forced out of their home by thugs employed by crooked land developers", suggested they needed The A-Team, and it certainly does have feel of a TV-episode story considering it's 'Amazing Stories' origins, but in a good way. I too used to think the bearded guy was a "star", it wasn't until years later that I realised he was just a stock actor. Several of the reviews also mentioned comparisons with 'Cocoon' (which I don't think I've ever seen right through but imagine I'd like). '*Batteries...' sounds like a cross between that and 'Short Circuit' (which by the way is prime for a video, Minty). It's maybe surprising - but thankful - that the movie didn't go the usual route of big tie-in toy-line and/or kids cartoon series, which could have been possible given it's cutsey little characters. I think it was a wise move to not just make it "a kids movie".
I have never heard of this movie before and I'll probably never watch it. However, I still watched this because I love watching Minty explain things about movies haha!
Makes me sad to think of people missing so much that is good, but knowing all about the empty mindless gabage made today (no offense, not your fault...) Here, the whole movie: ua-cam.com/video/_xdXE7CHSQw/v-deo.html
@@lilmamag163 sucks that she's gone but I gotta say even though Rush Hour was a few years back she still looked hot for her age, and when she was in la Bamba that scene with the outside shower showing off her fine ass was a highlight of my youth.
@Joe Blow No it wasn't. Act 1 was great. The conclusion/climax was great. Act 2 was lame. Canons notorious budget cuts reduced the movie from an outer space epic to a weird trip through the suburbs in a pink Cadillac. But even act 2 had some cool moments.
I watched Cocoon afterwards. If I knew going in that it had starred the Rileys, Mortimer Duke, Bastian Bucks AND Officer Mahoney, I would’ve jumped at the chance. However, my image of Jessica and Hume was cemented by this film.
Was 7 years old when this came out in 1987. Man, this movie and ghostbusters, flight of the navigator, the goonies and explorers et al changed my young life! Still love em all till this day! The 80's was a good time for kids movies! Great video as usual, minty! Love your content dude!

@@dr.decker3623 Joe's Apartment is a funny movie, I said that in my earlier post. But it pales in comparison to *batteries not included in terms of story and heart. Yes, it's funnier and some of the scenes are technically impressive, but *batteries not included is overall a far superior movie.
@@MrStrikecentral in terms of story and heart? lol,.. yes the premise is out there, and the main plot is basic, but the story isn't very basic at all since it brings together some interesting af characters, just like Batteries, and if you don't think Joe's has heart then i don't think you watched it to the end, or maybe only while distracted, it's based on heart and the transcendence of love and beauty coming from strange and weird places, i think maybe you missed that?.. i wouldn't say either is better than the other since they are for 2 completely different demographics, it would be like saying Baseketball is superior to Universal Soldier,... but ya, that's the thing with opinions,.. yeh both have amazing technical accomplishments, and Joe's did it for a lot less :P

Btw I’m Child’s play the batteries were included!!! They fall on the floor and that’s how Andy’s mom realize that Chucky it’s alive
Sebastián Mange I hate that movie
I love this movie and I'm glad you did a review on it but I'm disappointed you didn't even mention Faye's dementia. Not only does a large part of the plot revolve around and rely on it, but it's also a really heartbreaking look at what happens to many older people. Not only that but it's so accurately and sensitively portrayed, at a time when much less was known about dementia, and older people who suffered from it in movies were much more commonly portrayed as wacky/off their rocker. In that sense this movie is really groundbreaking and it's a shame you didn't explore that aspect.
I agree with this. It's a huge aspect of the movie and pretty groundbreaking for its time, yet not mentioned once.
Oh the shame, the shayyyy um
I've got the DVD, and have watched it, a dozen times at least.
There's one bit that always gets me, every time, a true Spielberg moment - when the four aliens come into shot, and then the view pulls back and shows a few more - and a few more - and a lot more … every time.
Now we need a 10 things about Cocoon.
This film holds special meaning to me as along with Explorer's and E.T, I remember actually going to the cinema with my mum to watch it. I'm 42 now and those were good times. Great video Minty.
I'm starting to realise why I mistakenly thought that Steve Guttenberg was one of this movie's stars.
This is easily one of my favorite movies from my childhood. Such a great classic. Thank you for making this video, Minty.
I made my kids watch this movie so they know what real movies look like
This movie was a “gift” on Christmas Day. It was free in all Cinemas.
I watched this as a 7 year old in the theaters. In its original 1st run.
aww man lucky you. Only saw it on TV for the first time, back in 1990 or so.
I was six. My dad went to see Wall Street, mom and I went to see this.
You should do D.A.R.Y.L. or T.A.P.S.
I haven't seen TAPS but DARYLL was absolutely ace as a kid
Cloak and Dagger!
Seconded, I’d also like to nominate Toy Soldiers from 1991 or The Rescue 1988
Minty also mentioned The Legend of Billy Jean. That's a lost classic
Or (to continue with the abbreviated movies) S.O.B., M.A.S.H. or H.O.T.S.
Before CGI, practical special effects evoked a sense of wonder, warmth and imagination.
Hell yeah, someone else remembers this movie!
Such a beautiful film and wonderful cast, childhood nostalgia !
I have never heard of this movie before and I'll probably never watch it. However, I still watched this because I love watching Minty explain things about movies haha!
Dude, watch this masterpiece, you will not regret it, it's a must watch!
Makes me sad to think of people missing so much that is good, but knowing all about the empty mindless gabage made today (no offense, not your fault...) Here, the whole movie: ua-cam.com/video/_xdXE7CHSQw/v-deo.html
@@NextWorldVR holy cow, this is actually the whole movie, thanks! I'll give it a go tonight. Appreciate it.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahhahahahahhhahaahahahahahahhhhhhahahahaaaaahahahahahahahhahahahnoouop9hy8668ggi
This was such a fun movie! Memories for sure. And I used to religiously watch Amazing Stories every week.
Hey minty you cant forget Elizabeth pena also played the famous Rosie in La Bamba. I love this movie and yoir videos thank you 😀
LilMamaG16 not to mention Rush Hour
@@nikapol25 yes I love rush hour 😊
@@lilmamag163 sucks that she's gone but I gotta say even though Rush Hour was a few years back she still looked hot for her age, and when she was in la Bamba that scene with the outside shower showing off her fine ass was a highlight of my youth.
Watched this not too long ago. Brought back memories from my childhood as I saw this on HBO when I was a kid.
Good episode,
Have looked into '87 MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE movie?
Richie Cagley👍
He already did.
@Joe Blow Well yeah, of course it is. Doesn't mean he can't do a video about it...in fact, he already did.
@Joe Blow YOU are horrible.
@Joe Blow
No it wasn't.
I love this movie, I have on DVD and watch it on a regular basis.
Thanks for sharing this one.
Cheers.
It's been a while since I last saw this film love it like I love half of the films from the 1980s
Was 7 years old when this came out in 1987. Man, this movie and ghostbusters, flight of the navigator, the goonies and explorers et al changed my young life! Still love em all till this day! The 80's was a good time for kids movies! Great video as usual, minty! Love your content dude!
this has a remake/sister film,.. and i dare you to tell me it's not "Joe's Apartment" ... :D
Joe's Apartment, while hilarious, doesn't begin to hold a candle to *batteries not included. You should be slapped for even making the comparison.
@@MrStrikecentral lmfao,.. that is a lot of spite over two innocent films,.. and how does it not "hold a candle" to this? Joe's is a cult classic, and i don't think i've met one person that didn't like it, no matter the demographic,.. even older people thought it was good, gross but good lol
I remember watching this movie as a child, with my parents at a "movie under the stars" showing. Such good times with the family during the summer.
Just wondering. Did you ever cover the old Police Academy franchise? One of my favorites.
I heard something about another sequel or reboot of the Police Academy film. Have you?
@@chrisvellner3922 no I haven't but it wouldn't surprise me.
Your surname's Johnson...that's funny.
I've always thought the cast of IN LIVING COLOR should have continued/remake the POLICE ACADEMY films. JIM CAREY, TOMMY DAVIDSON & DAVID ALAN GRIER would've been perfect.
You can become so popular and so rich and so loved that you become royalty. Examples of this are Taylor Swift and Elvis.
Again minty Please do Galaxy Quest
David Garcia that's a good one
i WOULD LOVE THAT ALSO! Its locked on my DVR.
Damn I've already forgotten about this movie. I remember really loving this movie when I was a kid.
I always thought this was Cocoon with robots.
Was thinking the same thing lol
Exactly what I thought also lol it had to be the same set of principals and production people.
no,.. it is Joe's Apartment with robots, instead of roaches,.. but this released far before :P
Well, the elderly couple were also in Cocoon.
Cocoon
Loved this one as a child! Suggestions: "The Quiet Earth" ,"Frailty" and "The Stand"
Good morning everyone love a minty vid before i start my day ty mint for starting my day off great love ur content
I watched this movie a million times as a kid. Thanks for this video!
How about 10 things you didn't know about "Nukie (1987)"
Or 10 things you didn't know about "Purple People Eater (1988)"
It's a suggestion.
@Monkeyshines Productions - I'm just Sooo happy I'm not the ONLY ONE that remembers that movie, Plus I still have that movie on VHS Cassette.... What about Bed Knobs And Broom Sticks????
Wow! I never, ever knew there was a connection between this and Childs Play, at least in the terms of title. I grew up in the 1980's and was aware of both films. I have not seen this film in perhaps 30 years. Thank you for reminding me of this slice of my childhood.
Thank you again for another great video, Minty! Cheers!
Hey minty can yu do a 10 things you didn't know about sleepwalkers ?
Its a GREAT movie. Me and my wife rented it around 1989 or 1990. We loved it. When I see that on electronics I still think of this movie.
12:53 lol good joke minty
this also reminded me very much of a kind of The Shoemaker and the Elves type of story but then I'm a hopeless fairy tale fan
Race-Car backwards is Race-Car.
Actually it's raC-ecaR...
So is TacoCat
I saw this movie on TV. I loved it. I wish I had a copy of it.
Anyone think this film helped inspire Pixar's Up? I mean, the setting and elderly couple.
Batteries Not Included is a classic. I've loved it since childhood. Jessica Tandy should had got a OSCAR nomination for her performance.
I know you've done Twilight Zone, but can you do Twilight Zone the movie?
Minty, somehow you manage to capture the music (plus or minus 5 years) in each video that fits perfectly.
Your background music is always spot on. Nicely done one again.
Love this movie!!! I used to watch it everytime it was on TV.
This was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and I think it still holds up pretty well even today.
Amazing Stories was a great TV show from Spielberg himself. A reboot is reported to be in production.
