The red lines on the Union Jack are offset, or "counter-changed", to give more prominence to the white diagonals of the St Andrew's cross. This was done when St Patrick's cross was added to the Union Flag in 1801. If the cross had been placed on top of the white diagonals, it would have looked like the white was just a border around the red

I just learned two days ago that the red diagonal of Union Jack is actually Northern Ireland and Wales is not represented since they got conquered and didn’t unite like the others so they didn’t have a say. Which is not only sad in itself but also because they have a nice dragon flag

Interesting fact about the Australian flag - the 7 pointed star in the bottom left quadrant is the Federation Star - the 7 points represent the 6 states (1 per state) and the final point represents all the territories that make up Australia when we federated in 1901. This star also appears on our coat of arms and our currency.
re: uk flag: it is for northern Ireland! you have the red and white cross of st george for england, and blue and white st andrews cross (or saltire) behind for scotland, inlayed with st patricks cross (or salture) foe norther ireland. the dragon of wales is sadly not included. And according to a very memorable doctor who moment, its the union flag. it is call the union jack only when flown at sea.
