I've studied the murders on most trails... However, this is the best and most detailed video of it, and many times better than people's writings... Hat's off to you and your channels.. I'll be picking up some swag once I get to an address I can received it... I'm in Mexico right now and they just are not real good about getting you packages pretty much anywhere here unless you spend a fortune getting it almost couriered to you... Or you are friends with people flying down in person... So, until then... Love this channel and especially how you cover topics...
I thru hiked the AT, PCT and many other trails. I am a wilderness EMT, and have worked for the Georgia Appalachian Trail conservancy, in amicalola State Park (where springer mountain is located). I know of, or worked with the people that handles these cases. This is one of, if not the most inaccurate vid on this case I've ever seen. Low gap shelter is no where near springer mountain, the town that they would have been able to hike to is hiawasee ga, not Helen. The map of Rocky knob is the wrong one, there is no Rocky knob shelter in GA. Not then or now. Pretty obvious this guy just regurgitating info from other channels and did no research whatsoever. I suggest when you get back from Mexico, you study trail murders a little bit more brother......
@@cwd243 I wasn't telling the story... However, what went down with Margret and her trail wizard is legit = "Joel". The missed details don't really affect the facts directly related to this case.. I guess I need to edit this to say that I was sick on the day I watched this and that all of the unwarranted hate bc of my misinterpretation is really Fucking disgusting. Fix your hearts. The whole time after you mentioned Joel had had a bad head injury as a child I was worried he was going to be the one who harmed Margaret, especially with her lying to her family to convince them to let her go hiking with him... As soon as you said there was someone else they ran into though I knew they would both be the victims but it's so tragic to hear that Joel didn't survive the ordeal. He seemed like a truly beautiful man and I'm glad Margaret not only survived but maintains Joel's legacy in a way by continuing his love of the outdoors he instilled in her. A beautiful and tragic friendship.

It's long been shown that consequence doesn't prevent crime. The death penalty proves that. As does our prison system's reoffense rate. Other nations that concentrate more on treating the person as a way of preventing future crimes have a much better society in regards to both crime and the re-offense rate.

@@carolvarney9244 yes especially when they release child killers. That really bothers me, they release pedos like nothing putting other children in danger.
On the topic of safety on the trail(s)... Day hikers, section hikers, and through hikers all... The most important thing (PERIOD - IMO) is Situational Awareness.. People would be smart to use this in daily life as well, but on the trails, there isn't so much static / noise going on to dull down your senses... If you are new to hiking or just hitting trails in general, go with a friend, or better yet, multiple friends... There actually is safety in numbers.. This is a good example.. Man, woman... Kill the male.. Female is generally more easy to deal with after, especially back then.... Taking on a group of people would take someone who is a trained killer... IF you go it alone ladies, especially in less traveled parts of a trail... Camp off the trail a ways, with nobody watching were you went... Always carry a sat tracker with "SOS" of any variety, EPIRB included = no monthly.... And, I suggest you carry some sort of a weapon for any issue you might have... I'm not telling anyone to break laws or trail rules (there are no rules when you are out in the wilderness alone)... I'm 6'1 215' walking around off trail... I used to be a trained "fighter" in boxing and later what is now considered "MMA".. I seriously can read situations, but I have no shame in saying I "carry" what I feel I might need to "carry" with me... Nobody sees anything, unless I am in Alaska, Montana, etc... Then it may be across my chest in plain sight... Up there, my caution moves more from coward men like this guy, who stand out like a thumb on (AT, PCT - VERY RARE, but they end up there sometimes) to brown bear and moose considerations... Hunting or just trekking deep into alaska.. You will know exactly that I am carrying.... Pretty much anyone you come across off the beaten path, or in cities, out to eat on Friday or Saturday nights will wonder if you don't have a bulge on your ankle or hip, at the very least... I have met some shady people on trails... They generally stand out... Just like this guy did to them.. Or, HIM... "Man" (sorry if I offend anyone) is by far the most dangerous predator walking this planet... That is definitely not to say they are greatly outnumbered by good people, especially on the trail... The AT just has so many opportunities for nogoodniks to access it with ease.. The CDT is absolutely the safest, but you won't see all that many people hiking it... Outside of a firearm or bear bells (don't scare bears or humans 99% of the time), a legit can of bear spray on your pack, on any trail, works exceptionally well for both curious / obnoxious black bears (some brown), and especially humans.. IF you have a problem with a "2 legger" who is getting aggressive.. Right in the eyes and move out fast... It stings bears noses and eyes pretty well, unless they are defending cubs or a cache.... I've heard and seen it being used (video) on humans... Unlike pissed off bears protecting their cubs, human don't handle it well at all... IF too big for comfortable carry, I can't say enough good about FoxLabs 5.3 or FL 1.4 (newer)... My wife carries 1.4 when jogging.. I carry it all the time at work or on the go... /"dear diary"... ;)
The fact that Joel was described as childlike and naive but still knew there was something off about Joel is tragic. He would have undoubtedly grown to become an amazing man, truly too wonderful for this world.

I love this channel, but Somewhere Sinister is awesome! I subscribed about 3 minutes in to the first episode. Excellent channel, I LOVE it!!!!!!
Get ready for a good binge..❤
Hey! You are right. I live near the trail and every time I go near it I’m now going “yeah, not doing that ever…”
Always the perfect bedtime stories. Monsters!
How do you do it Jiles? So enthralling from beginning to ending! Thanx so much!🌸💕🌸
I've studied the murders on most trails...
@@cwd243sure😂😂. Rocky knob shelter in Ga-there was one, all you have to do is Google it. Maybe it's bc YOU weren't there in the 70's?🤣
@@cwd243 I wasn't telling the story... However, what went down with Margret and her trail wizard is legit = "Joel". The missed details don't really affect the facts directly related to this case.. IF you have hiked the AT, and definitely also the PCT, you know crazy people can hit you in most locations, with maybe the exception of the remote / long sections.. My points are simple.. Pay attention.. Be prepared.. Sketchy people on trail, and especially on the streets, stand out if one pays attention.. What happens after that is dictated by.... well, by the bad behaving stranger(s). Thanks for your work on the Georgia ATC, btw.... Paid or volunteer.. P.S. I am no paranoid at all.. Just been around.. ~ EarthBouncer(73)
I watch all your channels for the storytelling. Thanks.
I've been watching your channel for a couple years now and it's so crazy to hear about people that were from places close to my hometown
I have to tell ya my friend I have been watching and listening to you since season 2.This is what needs to be said.I watch alot other programs but they come and go because there seem to turn in someway or another and I replace those shows often. But when it comes to you and your voice I feel you are one of the very few that always keep the same humble and classy delivery in your tone and your material.Bottom line my friend your are at the top of my list of the best things on youtube, also your show I wait for,you are a must watch and listen to show.I dont miss an episode.I know i sound like I have teenage crush but just being honest my friend.thanks for reading this(hope you do anyway) ok going to watch your lastest. Please NEVER change.
Couldn't have said it better myself - totally agree! Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
100% agree! Thank you
You know darn well we got work tomorrow and you know we gonna stay up and watch it! Haha can’t wait to see the content! You’re the goat at story telling!
Just so you know, I watch Monsters and Sinister as soon as they're posted. Love both & recommend them to everyone into true crime. Thank you for your fantastic coverage of these.
Man, you always have superb narration. But this was on another level. Absolutely fantastic, top-notch story telling. I was glued to my TV listening to you share this. You rock my friend, don't ever stop making these videos
Hi, Jiles! I just wanted to drop a line and tell you how much I like you and your channel. You have an especially captivating way of delivering the content you present and are very intelligent and talented. Thank you for giving a powerful voice to victims of violent crime. I think your're great person and pray that you receive all the best things in life! Much love and respect from Columbia, SC, USA.
A beautiful and tragic friendship.
well read the title next time to take out some suspense
@@Pohlolol, neither your comment nor the title is helpful. Go do something worthwhile...
The title literally has the perpetrator's name.. And your comment just shows how people are conditioned to expect bad behavior from individuals with history of trauma/issues.
The guy just had a concussion. (Severe one but still)
@@2default, I was literally sick that day. Humans are sooooooooo kind and compassionate and understanding....
🖕
@@2default, I've had at least two concussions... It's not that I think "everyone who gets hit in the head goes on to commit murder" but more that "I'm literally listening to a true crime video and I am aware that head injuries can cause people to act abnormally"
Your comment just goes to show how awful you truly are.
Here we are with another MONSTER. Sending my deepest condolences to the familia affected.
Thanks man .
Good explanation of the bullet's trajectory, through Joel's skull and brain. Being a subsonic round it lacked the power necessary to exit the skull and was thus recovered.
Fantastic Jiles! Seeing the notifications from This is Monsters and Somewhere Sinister, eases my Monday morning back to work routine. Aah Coffee and Jiles... so relaxing.
You are hilarious! The sarcasm is worth it all. You have more details and whimsical sarcastic observations than others. I love this stuff!
💙At some point you’d think at least one of these people that were contemplating taking another’s life would stop & say “Gee it seems like people are getting caught, especially with all of the new technology…maybe I shouldn’t?!?”
I’m also stumped by people evading police, causing a car chase, but still turning their blinker on to signal a turn🤭🤭and people who take other’s lives, but want the death penalty taken off the table💙
It's long been shown that consequence doesn't prevent crime. The death penalty proves that. As does our prison system's reoffense rate.
Other nations that concentrate more on treating the person as a way of preventing future crimes have a much better society in regards to both crime and the re-offense rate.
HUGE fan from the start! This is my fave season so far!
I just love listening to your storytelling voice. You do such a wonderful job... thank you so much. For all you do.
Hey,Jiles, HEEEEY! I must tell you this, before I forget, as I'm, in the words of one of my favorite Radiohead songs..." Scatterbrain ",( not on a regular, mind you, BUT, 'cause I have a lotta thangs goin' on at the moment. But, I digress.) Let ME let YOU know, (and, yes, it might sound kinda crass, so, just receive it,ok ?) THIS channel is my S**T. And, fyi, I'm here to let you know that you have a HUGELY diverse audience out here. I'm a 61 year old black/bi-racial woman, and made it a point to educate everyone in my orbit regarding your channels, because, as far as WE'RE concerned, a truly GREAT story/storyteller has no color/shade. Just facts, my good brother. Anyway, just wanted to put it out there. We appreciate the art of it all, what you do, and how you do it. Good lookin'out. 🌹 and friends.
I absolutely LOVE your content. Monsters and Somewhere Sinister are both such great channels! Thank you for all that you do.
Have you watched Jiles with a J? his 3rd channel
@@kimwalshyes absolute libtard garbage 🗑️
I’m going to show my age here; but, in the 70s, any sort of incense was referred as being “punks.”
Back to watching another brilliant video from Jiles!
Love, love, love the content. I look forward to new videos and I’m binge watching the older ones. I think it’s great that you are telling the stories of people who aren’t able to tell them ❤
This was AWESOME story! Possibly my favorite on this channel.
One of the few channels I can listen to an comfortably fall asleep to. Always go back to “rewatch” what was missed out on.
The old advertisement for Lawn Darts was perfect! The most deadly game of the 70's! 😂😂
Morning all! This is a great way to get ready for work!
Mornin’ from south Louisiana! And you are correct. This is a great way to get ready for work. Off to teach the kiddos!
Viewed as a podcast. Great episode. You work is fantastic. Thank you!
I cant go to sleep without hearing ur voice and stories
Once again you did a great job and really know how to tell a story.
Those Poor people!! How Traumatizing!! And Scary as Hell! 🥀🥀🥀🙏🙏🙏💔💔💔🕊️🕊️🕊️
The awesome narration and superb editing makes this one of the best true crime channels.
What an incredible story
I had to come look up your version of this story after suffering through the unrelenting grammar fails of Kyle Hates Hiking. Made it unwatchable. This is much better, I'm glad you covered it.
Just in time for bed 💤 thank you for your hard work and consistency Jiles! 🩷
Love you Giles.... Your voice, and direct narration is very much appreciated. Been here from the start :) xxx
Good morning NZ from the US. I enjoy Jiles stories too!
Sir, let me first day that your voice is perfect for streaming. The way you present your stories make them all intriguing and easy to listen to.
However I subscribed on 100% fascinating content everytime.
Life can sure be stranger than fiction sometimes. What a crazy story!! Thank you for another great video 😊❤❤
❤ your work and channels..
I'm from Skagit and I've never heard this story ! Crazy . May all R. I. P. Sending healing light and love to all the families
Thank you for another video! 🫶
Traumatic brain injuries can be so goddamn ruinous.
My bedtime story, appreciated, thanks
I'd love to see Jiles with a Million subs by the end of the year. Best crime channel on TubeYou!
The first time catching a bus home from Texas was funny enough but when you said he started the AT and it happened again, I almost choked laughing. 🤣
I feel so bad for Joel. Having the brain injury but still trying to live his dream. Then to killed only for some gear. I’m thankful Margret was able to go on and have a full , successful life. Hard to believe Ralph was given another chance.
My sympathy to Joel’s family and loved ones , he sounded like a great guy. May he rest in peace.
Love this chanel, whenever theres a new vid I'm one of the first to listen . Have just started on your other chanel somewhere sinister and love it need to catch up tho so I got a few vids to get through
Great story. Thank you, beautifully told.❤
I find it incredibly bizarre how he was a convicted r*pist but never attempted to harm Margaret. She is so fortunate and I am so happy she made it out alive.
If you are 6 miles into a hike that's going to be hundreds of miles, and you start to form blisters on your feet already, just turn around. You are not conditioned for that hike
Hopefully I can fall sleep after I listen to this you voice is so calming
This Channel, and your other channel are two of my favorite channels, your sarcasm keeps me giggling🙂
Hello qt! I'm always thrilled to see 🥰 you and your videos!
Hello Sarah from NZ... Lily from Alaska says hello to all as well...
Hello from south Louisiana! Jiles, another great episode. Thank you for all your hard work.
@julieloucalcote1368 HI too! Worked with many Louisiana folk in the Oilfields of Alaska, the North Slope...Danton, Wandlers, Childresses, just tons of folk from there. Most Alaskans know how to make gumbo, but never like a genuine Louiahnahn! Take care...lily
Good morning, and Thank You for an Excellent video!
Good morning Giles! What can you tell us about Lucy Letby, the neonatal nurse from England who killed 6 babies and tried to kill 7 more from 2015-2016? I'll wait for your excellent reporting should you decide to do so. Thank you for all the hard work that you do for us. Peace.😊
This was a good one that I never have heard before. Thanks for all your work ❤️
Amazing story! Thank you for sharing.
What a story! Thanks for telling it so well, love this is monsters❤
Thank you from Ontario Canada ❤❤❤
Great episode! ❤ The unexpected twist in Margaret's words was 'Ralph's kindness'. Poor, poor Joel.
I love your voice, your show, and you seem like such a neat guy. Thanks for all the great content!!❤
Wow, it’s a miracle that she wasn’t assaulted in the hotel. I was for sure dreading that was coming as soon as them getting a hotel room was mentioned.
Wasn’t*
Just so you know, you do a wonderful job with the videos. Thank you blessings to all
GOOD MORNING BEAUTIFUL SINISTER MONSTER'S FAMILY ❤❤❤
Yes a new video always excites me 👏 👏
i love the story of Joel and Margaret and their life paths. great job, as usual, setting up the backgrounds or the victims. and these videos of the AT really want me to visit if not hike the thing
Get your conceal carry if you can. Get a small pistol like a Ruger .380. It fits in one’s pocket. I carry on hikes with my kids. I don’t think it’s cool to carry a pistol, but this is the world we live in.
Thank you Monsters🙏💔🕊️
I swear to god Monsters has the best narrative voice to just stare off into the void and listen and absorb...
Thank you, Jiles!
Your the best at this. Greetings from South Texas
Rest in peace Joel. He seemed like such a free spirit and a lovely human being. I’m glad Margaret survived her ordeal. Idk why they let people out after committing a murder it’s not right that person they killed no longer has a life to live but yet these killers get a second chance I don’t understand why the world works this way.
If it's truly not self defense, they should NEVER be given a second chance!
@@carolvarney9244 yes especially when they release child killers. That really bothers me, they release pedos like nothing putting other children in danger.
So, it’s nothing to do with American healthcare, gun control or judicial system?
@@londoncalling1803 elaborate cuz I don’t understand what you’re asking. Are those causes as to why killers are released???
/"dear diary"... ;)
A better idea- don't go hiking.
You've made me obsessed with Appalachian everything
