The Citroen Ami is exactly the type of electric car that makes sense for the majority of city drivers. Cheap, light, small with a relatively small battery is the sort of vehicle that should be most of the EVs sold I think. Not the ridiculous high performance cars with hugh batteries that cost a fortune and depreciate like a stone. It make sense to have a small ZEV for a short journeys and an actual car for everything else.
My 18 year old daughter works at McDonalds, when not at college. It’s pays her £11.70 an hour, above minimum and holiday pay and pension. And a free lunch whilst at work, equal to about another tenner. I was thinking of applying myself at 54.
Wouldn’t mind an EV to replace my tiny Citroen C1 which I use for work, it’s goes everywhere as long as enough ground clearance. 12 years old, easy and cheap to service myself. Here’s the rub - I need 140 mile range inc’ winter. Needs to be cheap and reliable. C1 cost me £5K 10 years ago, still worth £2.5K, 55mpg, zero tax for the last 10 years, £130 insurance, service £30-£50, tyres -£50-70 per corner. Brakes - spent £50 in 70K miles.
Another thing to piss me off is the push to diesel, then the flip to diesels being evil - they'll do this with EV too, won't they? Already started by charging VED from April next year! A shame really with diesels as they're fantastic, I'm running a Mazda CX-7 now, 2.2 diesel. It's super smooth, quiet and efficient. I'd consider a plug in hybrid, but never a full EV.
Diesels use less fuel due to the way they are designed and produce less co2 than petrol... we all know the push to evs is insane and ice cars are cleaner than ever.. mad world we live in. Hold on to your diesels but the goverment will make it difficult to own one. Goverments are full of idiots.
It's not a question of using VED as a means of showing whether you believe diesels or EVs as being 'evil' The government raises revenue by VED, and they will want to keep raising that revenue into the future, by one means or another. The dishonesty at present is that no-one is talking about where the revenue is going to come from as petrol and diesel sales fall, and it is inevitable that taxation on the use of EVs will rise over time, whether it's by VED or pay-per-mile, or a tax on electricity used to charge them. We're being led (or rather pushed) on a journey without being told where we're going, and when we finally arrive, we may think 'if I knew this is where we were heading, I wouldn't have come here'. Commonly known as being 'led down the garden path'
I don't hate EV's but I'd never own one simply because I live in a village in a flat plus I need a vehicle for towing, yes I know ev's can tow but the range is reduced drastically plus public charging points don't cater for vehicles that tow. I used to watch the fully charged show but I don't any more as I get fed up with them pushing ev's down your throats the same goes for Auto trader, give the public choice is all I say.
Unfortunately, EV fanatics perceive anyone that is critical of any aspect of EVs and their roll-out as EV-haters, and accordingly, any comments they make can be disregarded no matter what evidence or data is put forward. Even within the EV fans, there is a substantial Tesla fanboy community that doesn't just hate ICE cars, they also hate all non-Tesla EVs
In the comment section of anything EV related, whether it’s positive or critical, Facebook or UA-cam, there are plenty of comments to the effect of “EV’s are shit”. Always from someone who hasn’t owned one, and also in a cult-like fashion. The thing that’s actually “shit” are the mandates. They’re to blame for near enough every problem, from Quentin’s stretched truths to closing factories.
You are one of the BEST people on UA-cam, i look forward to your videos more than most - do 1 a day for me if you can be bothered. People quite often dislike people that talk the truth because they then can't enforce their point of view coz the truth is the truth. They don't listen to practicality and common sense - they don't like it, because they think they are superior and common sense is actually quite basic if implemented correctly. Keep up the videos Barry - they're fantastic. EV cars are not a one for all solution - that's the point Haters gonna hate - ignore Em ALL!!!!!!
You said lots of good things in this one, Barrie. For example, as a salesman either you've got it or you don't. And other pithy observations. I think you were characterizing a lot of sales people as "order takers" who really don't know anything about the product they are representing. I'm not much of a salesman, myself, but I love good ones and have always supported them in my technical (IT) business. .One thing a salesman told me many years ago has stuck forever...."you're not really selling until the customer says 'No'" I'm sure you were persistent in telling the truth about the product and insured the customer got exactly what they really needed. Best wishes from sunny Florida!
Hi John, I’ve never knowingly sold a customer a car that didn’t suit their needs, no point you just lose them anyway, and they will never deal with you in the future either
If you think the EV stock on the forcourts is staggering. Think about all the ones sitting on the quaysides and on air fields waiting to replace those, NOT.
I hate car dealerships purely because of the type of salesperson that sit behind the desk on their phone not lifting their head when the door opens. When they do eventually saunter over with their “what do you want” attitude in their pointy shoes, no socks, pencil suit and hair that looks like it could do with a wash, the computer says NO!
Barrie, I don't have any option to select "stable sound" on my old iPad. Your little Ami makes perfect sense. And great idea to use a diesel cab heater.
Hi Barrie, great video, i have worked in the motor industry (technician/main dealer) for 27 years. The industry is changing very quickly and a lot of my colleagues have commented as to the change, that being a slow irreversible downturn. I liken it to the situation the miners of the 70's faced. I don't think the government will change direction on the ZEV mandate which means the industry will have serious problems leading into 2030. It will still linger on but the work force etc will surely be streamlined. I've never known a time like it in all my years in the trade, sad for the new guys coming in.
Sound is much better today. Stable volume isn't selectable for me. AMI type car is what an EV should be. Not a 3 ton EQC or super fast runs out of range quicker.
After owning two Leafs, that worked for me, I drive a cheap old Civic. I loved my electric cars but I just can't justify the cost, or the risk. I nearly went for a Honda E but it was expensive and I couldn't put the weekly shopping in the boot. Now I work from home I can justify it even less.
Nice work , met 3 guys in ev commercial vehicles wirk for nationwide company, runining costs much higher than diesel , and not getting volume of work due to chaging range etc .
Hi Barrie Certainly puts it into perspective , seeing all that investment standing around . Don’t they have the ability to stop the amount of vehicles being delivered ? . What happened to the just in time , stock management systems , and how long will a vehicle be standing out side in all weathers till a buyer is found . Seems a funny way of going on , in a market that’s not exactly booming . But what do I know , I’ve been driving over 50 years and never had a new car in me life 😊 Kind regards 👍
I love that Ami and your additions. So Citroen and cool. Be perfect for me in Bamber Bridge too for the stuff I do. I can reply relate to you. We both live in Depreston, not much education and a gift for selling things lol. 😂 if I didn't make commission, I'd just be on minimum wage, too. What is the ride quality like? Have you ever taken it down London Road and past your old site? That is a dreadful road and I'd test any new car on it before buying!
By the time you have fannied around fitting diesel heaters and leisure batteries surely you would be better off with a small ICE car? (One that you can use in the rain)
After storm Dana which hit Valencia in Spain very badly, literally thousands of cars had to be scrapped. However, they have been deposited in various designated areas (massive feilds) but now firefighters are inundated with scrapped EV's exploding and causing fierce fires. I'll never have an EV
It’s not the existence of EVs as a viable transportation option, the problem is supranational government (net zero related) mandates telling us that EVs are the sole transportation solution beyond (Agenda) 2030.
I feel that when EV’s were less common place as they are currently, think early Tesla models before the legacy manufacturers had a go at building them, EV’s were seen as almost aspirational as an automotive product. Now, with the well known problems, desperation to shift them / discounting etc, they are far from desirable and not the cool kid anymore.
Barrie let us know what the road tax will be next year on an Ami please? I know in theory it should be the same as a moped but will it be as there is no road tax class for quads. I have a horrible suspicion it will be the same as a car. Before we get the global emissions crowd commiting suicide the fuel consumption of these heaters is miniscule and given the short range of the Ami it won't be on for long.
The VED on my diesel will be going up from £0 to £20 next year, a lot less than almost every EV on the road, and possibly lower than you'd pay for a moped.
THAT is how EV's should have been introduced. Capture the City drivers and those who only do a morning run to school/shops. That's all an EV need do. The industry FAILURE was to present an EV as an alternative to ICE vehicles where, under identical comparisons, EV's fail in many areas - which has introduced the reticence in many potential owners. It gets worse when trying to convince businesses that VANS are a good EV choice! Such policies are ruining the introduction of EVs as a viable alternative AT THIS TIME. It will be decades before they are a true alternative to everything an ICE vehicle offers.
Question: When fuel stations have large display signs that can be clearly seen from the road showing the price per ltr. Why don't EV chargers have the same? not miss information as the price per kWh is likely clearly displayed before you charge but by then you've already reversed into a bay ready to charge. So would you then look for somewhere else or just accept the price and charge up. I suppose the apps tell you but smacks of double standard to me a little.
No thats the frame but i padded it because i kept banging my head on it, and if i do roll it as the lad in France did, i don't want to hit it any harder
Electric propulsion is fine, but it has a purpose. EVs are NOT replacements for normal vehicles. They were (are) ideal for milk floats, which is why they're perfect for small town journeys.
Just brought first second hand car for 8 years and was very close to getting a used EV but the charging in Cornwall is laughable and even though I can charge on the drive I dont want to only have a range of 150 miles. EVs with decent range are still silly money considering how knackered the batteries will be in 10 years. Some of the EV nuts are making out EV batteries will last 15 years. Based on what data? A handful of high mileage early teslas is not enough data to go off. I have experience of thousands of lithium and Lipo batteries (laptops) and they nose dive at 10/11 years if they get that far. I do not and will not lease a car. Just hope by the time I can no longer afford to buy outright im too old to drive or want to go anywhere.
So we all move to EV's. The government loses billions in revenue from tax on petrol and diesel, so where will they raise that lost money from? Oh, I know, the public.
I don't think anyone actually knows when an EV reaches carbon neutrality. Wilson & Llewelyn at the Fully Charged Shit-Show claim it's 15k miles, which is obviously nonsense. Volvo did a study stating it's 75k miles, and I've seen two more studies claiming 100k miles, and 115k miles.
