MTV used to play this only after midnight, I was 19 when I first watched this out of nowhere in the middle of the night and I didn’t know what hit me. I thought back then that this unique blending of sound and image was the best video clip of all time. I occasionally go back to it to find out if it was just my teenage self exaggerating. Nope, timeless masterpiece.
It was exactly the same with me! I was 16, stayed up late watching MTV and I loved the dialogue, the limo entrance, that sync of music & the dance moves and the masks and that slow-mo twerking motion of dancers flesh. I couldn't recover! Difficult to get that kind of sense of surprise and enjoyment now :/
I feel you have to be below 20 or at max 30 at your first watch to feel this is some timeless masterpiece. I'm close to 40 and just saw this for the first time. It's strange and interesting, yes, it's good. But it's also childish and edgy. Not that that's a bad thing. But it certainly feels aged in todays world. The music is much more timeless than the video.
@@bened22 Well, one can never really know if they are trapped in their initial feel, could be. Then again, there are tons of things I idolized back then, that I am now completely over. To me, even if it is originally meant as an edgy parody of hip hop videos, it was never about that. There is something genuinely disturbing, a sense of uncannines that always gets me to this day. It’s like a horror film that instead of dark tones decides to be all the more ominous because of the blinding light. But, hey, matter of taste, sometimes it’s as simple as that.

One of the best video clips ever made... the production values, the dance quality/choreography, the originality, the lighting, the sheer unsettlingness of it all... I just can't get over how awesome this was even all these years later.
bartekkko First of all: your use of the English language is appalling. Come on friend, at least pretend you have some semblance of class. Second: where did I say that this was the most unsettling thing ever? There are many many more unsettling things in many ways. The point was that this was unsettling in exactly that way that the art direction intended. Classy, subtle and beautiful. Third: come to daddy was awesome as well; Windowlicker is just a few steps above and beyond in just how perfect it was.
Turn down a bit on the hostility bro. I'm sorry for the first two sentences but I was a bit drunk (and a slav) back then (I'm not saying i'm not a drunk slav all the time, cause I am)
Now, the important stuff.
I like this video mainly because it's got absolutely amazing choreography and the main idea holds up well, so that all my possible nitpicks (that it's not that classy and really not subtle) can't penetrate deep enough to hurt the core. More importantly, I never implied that you thought it's the most unsettling thing ever, just that if this idea even half-shocks you, then you have no idea what other things the internet has in store (yes, I know that this music video came out way before 4chan was a thing)
Meanwhile, come to daddy is a mess. In fact, to explain the the very reason I came here to rewatch Windowlicker MV was because I hated CTD so much and was trying to figure out why, but you'll be glad to know that I did.
It's trying to be horror, but somewhere on it's way to Silent Hill it misread the signs and ended up in Resident Evil. That would be fine if it ended with some kind of twist, to show that the video knows and revels in being a retarded mess, but it didn't. It's just a collection of horror scenes with no cohesive narrative between them. We don't know anything about any of the appearing characters' motivations, let alone story, making the video feel very cold and lifeless, particularly in the scenes with the TV aphex-twin demon. it's literally "a dude with a distorted face saying ominous things and corrupting kids for no reason". .
To put it shortly, CTD sucks because it starts with a load of people doing stuff, and ends with people doing the exact same stuff they were doing at the beginning of the video.
ahem... is that a 600F3 in your profile pic? cool, i've got an SV650AL7, wanna go ride later?
> Turn down a bit on the hostility bro
Ok. Thanks for writing up this serious reply! :) Much better.
We apparently disagree on our interpretations of class and subtlety :) I do think there's a lot of both in Windowlicker, mostly found in the careful weighing of the not-so-subtle awkwardness (maybe a better word for what I meant than than unsettlingness) and the obvious scrutiny that went into the art direction doing that weighing.
And no, the idea, images, gender morphing etc. didn't shock me (believe it or not, my now 55-yo dad is a post-op transsexual, went through the procedure over the past decade and seeing him "transform" to her IRL physically and mentally over all that time was way deeper to the core than this music video could ever be :) ) Yeah this video is not actually shocking nor even that unsettling, it just skews my psyche (if that makes sense) in just that perfect way which I feel was exactly intended by the art direction.
Maybe me failing to properly convey the still quite emotional effect this song has on me is partly due to the simple fact that English is only my third language; I may miss subtly nuanced implications of words like "unsettling"... (My native language is Dutch; my second one German.)
The bike is a CBR 1000 F. If you ever find yourself around the Netherlands, hit me up :)
I thought of another way to phrase what I meant: the video seems to me to be designed to "grind the viewer's gears" in quite a particular way and for me it succeeds very well in just that.
+SadBunny I see your point, even though i may not entirely agree with it.

In 1999 Chris Cunningham wanted make a creepy parody of Hip-hop music videos for the techno artist “Aphex Twin”, instead he accidentally prophesied all early 21st century culture.
Which Is quite interesting
Not really. This "culture" was going on long before the 21'st century. This video was a reflection of what was current & mainstream at the time - it was satire re the 1990's gangsta' pop music scene.
@@SamUrtonDesign this is exactly what the person you replied to said - the clip parodies the hip-hop clips of its time, which were the mainstream of the 90s. read carefully)
funny, but there is a video clip of the rnb / hip-hop group tlc - no scrubs (released 3 months earlier than windowlicker), they sing about the same topic - I don’t want to have a relationship with a "broke ass" who doesn’t have his own car and money and so on. there the same terms are the same) really a mockery of a certain culture and types of people.

I definitely got judged, and don't think anyone became a fan, but everyone enjoyed the video! Such a classic!
Another visionary, yet deeply disturbing (but in this case, also pretty funny) collaboration by Aphex Twin, and Chris Cunningham. Still brilliant after all these years.
This deserves to be recognised on the same level as MJ's Thriller - it's that magnificent. It's one of the most perfect combinations of image and sound ever edited together. Is there anything else even close? I Can only think of Stromae's music videos which are also works of art.
Trust me, I am old enough to remember Thriller in situ, and it wasn't all that at the time; it was already kind of weirdly dated in both concept and execution. This shit, tho... minds blown regardless of context.
You’re either nuts or on drugs, if it’s the latter I need some. This isn’t even in the same realm of talent as thriller.
Tool - Stinkfist is pretty good
It’s better. No contest.
Tbh I think the "Come to Daddy" music video is better in terms of execution and synchronicity of audio/video, but this is pretty good as well.
I love the fact my dad showed me this video when I was younger. Now that I'm older I appreciate my dad's great taste in music !
what other stuff did he like?

I had forgotten about that psychedelic music for years...now I remember when I was a 5 year old kid and I used to listen to it in the background during the credits of the documentaries that my father used to watch.
In 1999 this was challenging music to listen to. So much of it has been absorbed into the mainstream now it seems really fresh.
What's funny is when ever people ask me why kind of music I like I tell them "I like challenging music" LOOOL And, well, I'm here, aren't I?

I first saw this in 2010, back in high school. All these years later, I'm still taken aback by how bizarre this whole thing is.
I saw it in original year 1999. I consider that it was the best gift video (Exclusive on MTV) for year 2000. And I still think so))) This video have everything! Intro bla-blah-blah, unique scratch mix, traincar lol, horror faces, infinite butts and end titles! Wow!
Just the simple premise of how he did this song in three different music genres for one video is so dope (trip-hop, EDM, Nu-Metal)
There isn't even the slightest trace of trip-hop or nu-metal in this song.

''Look at your hair'' i laugh everytime hahahah
Almost 20 years later and this shit still doesn't get old.
I watched it once and I’m already sick of it. I’ll never purposely watch it again.

I always notice something different in this song, 20+ years later
first got into Aphex Twin when i was 13 in '97. in my 20's he was under my radar. now i'm 37 and rediscovering all of it, totally different experience as an adult. it's genius, timeless, music.
I love how Aphex's most well known track is one he made as a laugh to take the piss out of R'n'B and hip-hop music at the time. (There's a reason it consists mostly of samples of slow hand claps and female moans)
i doubt he was taking the piss out of anything. he just made a more marketable, flashy song for once and it understandably became popular
I never really saw it as a parody, more of a aphex remake of that style with a refined sense of swag
@@XandraMeltphace Same here. RDJ is a piss-taker first and foremost.
I never really thought it about like that but I guess that does make sense. Though I still think Come To Daddy did a lot better of parodying metal than this does to hip hop.
@kaag iszwak probably Logan Rock Witch or 4?
For a song with such an odd title and music video, this is oddly relaxing.
hahahahha
wtfomgstudios this is what real partiers boogie to
It's called overproduction
Never licked a window? I recommend it
Thanks four the synthetic glas
he rolls the window down at 4:20 ... just saying
+Lev Lem ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
he's rolling on the window laughing
with the OUHHHHHHHHHHHH
The Fact that It cant be a coincidence is so stunning
Common that the time aligns perfectly is planned like the other 10:40 minutes of this track.
Lev Lem when the song starts too
I would happily watch an entire series about these two driving around LA getting into random hood shenanigans 🤣🤣
Oh 90s you are so missed.
Oh phrase you are so well-spoken.
so proud to have choreographed this crazy film. thanks, chris!!!!!!!
This video so old they say “please rate” in the description lol.
Also this is a masterpiece
1:03 I wish he would released that track. That bass is warm.
indeed!
I'm pretty sure it's in some way a deep track remix of Windowlicker itself. Kinda a more intense version of how windowlicker sounds during the outro.
If that makes sense
Edit - youtube thinks this comment is obscene for some reason
@@AArdW01f Because your comment has "licker" in it. So did my previous comment.
Agree so fucking crunchy i like it
It's on his website
I would’ve loved to have seen the reactions on the models faces when the director told them “ok so you’re going to be in a bikini and heels for most of the shoot and uhh, you’re going to be wearing this mask too”
Imagine their contract. "You are required to wear a bikini and a mask which shows Aphex Twins iconic face. Production starts ..... and all further informations are listed below. We aren't responsible when that's ruins your possible career."
8:16 man... this part is so insanely badass
in front of huge sound system even more
Are you afraid of it?
Sick
No, I just don't like techno.
Jew Slayer came here looking for this comment 😂👍🏻
when I first saw this on MTV base after 12 at an age of 15, I instantly knew what art was. Shit had me searching for richard d james, rephlex, chris cunningham on altavista, lmao. The persistance of the homie in the car made this shit a classic. How u gon have an ghetto interlude with some industrial ambient techno shit, this song and video is hella timeless. Shit, i wanted mother nature to produce some rain just so I could mimic Richard's umbrella dance. His logo crazy as shit too, I instantly fell in love with symbolism after I was exposed to his logo. I always wondered where he found and casted these fools in the intro, they did this video justice. And that limousine made me wanna channel my inner demon on some spiritual goddess bunny/credo mutwa shit. This video has it all and thats on God. Shoulda sent this to the outerspace with Bowie's discography.

Here in 2024?
Aww yeah
🙌🏻
Still here!! Crazy how this video almost looks like it could have been made by AI. aphex twin is so fcking cool
Yeah. I'm confused. Love it though.
@@pockets2714yeah. It's so much better than ai.
this video is ridiculously ahead of its time I would of guess that this video was made in 07 or something around that time
+Carl Bias late 90's I believe
+nobody '99
+Evan Harris a man very well explained
I was thinking 'yeah, right probably 2005 or something', but 1999?! Just incredible.

"I just wanna thank grandma and grandpa and the whole family for coming round to see my music video debut. You know I've been working hard on my dancing career and this is a huge chance for me to get my face out there, and I thank you all for supporting me. I love you all. Ok, let's watch..."
i first saw the music video when i was 10 and my mom grounded me for a week because of the intro
totally worth it tho
Lol
@@Mermaider Good pay off for sure
this is real art
grounded for the intro, but everything else was A-ok? lol
Fuck. I was wondering what this video was.
this song makes me wanna dance so much but there's nothing to actually dance to
Uh, to the song?
@@ximono How what?
Ppl say the dumbest contradictory comments nowadays 😂
@@lucas13flu bro is saying that you can't dance to the beat but it sounds like you could. it's not that hard to understand bro

Oddly, my late grandmother's favorite song and video.
That transition at 8:15 is brilliant. It hits really hard.
