My father owned a body shop and every summer I used to help him working on real cars. What a joy that was felt so great to work hard I felt like I was taking care of my brothers at that young age.Now I am painting Dinky and Corgi cars with my son
Buddy I'm glad your father is doing things constructive with you! My father left when I was 5. Appreciate this time spent. Listen and emulate what you can love the video you guys!
I wish my father and I had done something like this together, this was truly a wonderful video. Teaching your son to do this was GREAT! I'm going to share this video on my Facebook page, maybe it will inspire others to do the same. Thanks for sharing your skills, very impressive.
Sergio did a great job polishing and painting that casting. You have great technique and skill! Thanks for making a highly informative and quality production.
Great seeing father and son working together. I treasure the time my dad and I spend working on things in the shop. Wish he was here today to see all the interesting UA-cam videos.
This might have been the longest UA-cam-How-To-video I've ever watched from start to end in a row. I'm not too much in those little Die-Cast cars but own a bunch of them "just so". What caught my interest is that I own two 1:63 Land-Rovers from Corgy (efsi-HOLLAND); both were given to me as a present in my child-hood on different occasions. I still have them sitting on my desk as I found out that it seems they were made of the same mould, but differing in details: antenna/-hole, doorhandles etc
My dad was the same. I remember i was building a train set track layout with landscape. It was my mum that ended up helping me, as well as choosing materials at the model shop. My dad started moaning when my Mum and I started building it, probably because he wasn't getting the attention instead. Now I'm a Father myself, it's even more apparent now how crap a Father he was.
Mark Bartlett Kool dude.. My dad died when I was 10, but he made the most of it.. did everything he could before he had to go. That was 55 yr ago. I still miss him. I've passed that on to my son..As his own birth father sarrowfully couldn't begin to fathom...He & his mother (My wife) often tell me so..God Bless them..
Thank You for sharing such a detailed video with so much information and watching you and your Son brought back memories of me with my Father near his wood stove fixing broken old crystal lamps down a cold basement helping my Father. This is something that should be practiced more often and put down the gaming controllers and start reading books and using small to large power tools and find some quality time to spend together on anything. Thank You again.
Nice to see you working with your boy, Paisan! Familia! Get a kid interested in a hobby, and they won't have time - or money - for any of the bad stuff! LOL!!! This was real nice to watch! Good going to you both!
This video really helped it is worth watching it for an hour and thanks to you guys I didn't throw away my car with a broken roof post keep up the good work :)
Man what a bunch of babies, I've been collecting from when I was 12 I'm now 31 an find nothing wrong with a father and son spending time enjoying something they like doing, who care if the car is new or old it's not that serious it does not effect my life nor should it effect yours, grow up an stop being so negative an let people enjoy what they want!
i tthink it is cool how you and your son work together, that helps a boy become a strong person mentally, and it also helps with the father son relationship, i wish i would of had more time with my father, that is a sign of a good father. scottrick
the home made jig, would it help to have two elastic bands around the block to keep it steady, smart kid,im sure dads proud,i wonder if like many dads you fear the day when Surge out grows this awesome father/son hobby,im also sure Surge dosnt realise that to his dad this hobby has little to do with cars, and much more with the father/son interaction,my boy has turned 26 two years ago we got into a new hobby,we both love, and even though my son is now a dadd i still enjoy sharing this hobby ,which catapults my mind back 20 years this is what life is about, the memories are worth more than any thing money can buy
Very nicely done video. I see you have some pretty awesome redline Hotwheels Mustangs. Thank you for taking the time. It looks like this requires some skill and patience!
Great video!!! Very informative and well made. I'm a young guy in this hobby at 23, but it's always nice to see younger folks getting involved. I'm a restorer as well, though I mainly focus on Lesney Matchbox. I think the restoration of those is viewed a bit differently than redlines. People seem to take those a lot more seriously haha. But I think the only "bad" people in the restoration/custom side of the hobby are the ones that make rare variations and/or "mint" cars, and try to pass them off as the real thing. That's no good. I've made copies of rare variations before to sell, but always label them explicitly as reproductions. Usually, I only try to restore the most far gone cars. I like to think of these little cars as having souls and having a story to tell. A lot of times I'll come across cars with creative paint jobs on the chassis, and I always leave that alone. I like to leave some bit of originality on every car I restore. I'm just writing the next chapter of the car's story. Sorry for the dissertation haha.
I really like the idea of the car holding tool, I have drilled through way too many posts at a bad angle. But I do think how many tools you used was a bit overkill, I only use a tap/bit, file, pliers, buffing wheel, and an airbrush, and those work fine. I wish to do this with my kids one day when I am a father.
Hi great job on showing how to clean the airbrush was wondering where do you find the rivets for the bottoms of the cars nice restoration on the mustang
I agree that the rivets should be punched into place, or use solder paste with a soldering iron to get them into place to last. Glue seems like it will loose adhesion over time. Just my 2c.
I've watched a couple of different people restoring Hot Wheels and I was really surprised to see people go to so much trouble to clean the cars only to paint onto raw metal (no grey primer)? Is that because “Spectraflame” paint allows the metal to show through?
awesome video. I'm usually into building custom displays for diecast cars, but I want to learn more about customization and rebuilds. your video is a great learning tool. I have one request. can you do a video on decal application?
Cool vidio. I figured i would recomend trying electrolosis or electro polishing but you may already be using that method to clean the base by now considering how old this vidio is.
Good job guys I have a question not to do with this project but for one of my own! I have a matchbox crane I picked up for next to nothing the problem is, the cranes jib has been bent, I've checked it over and the cast isn't broken and doesn't have cracks on the bent jib. So really what is the best way to reform this bent jib so I don't snap or break it
Great tutorial!!! Do you and your son take any restoration jobs? My son who is now disabled has a Paul Tracy car that wants the GREEN decals replaced with the KOOL logos. We sent it out to be worked on but the gentleman that was going to do it could not remove the labels and scratched the paint!! Would love to be able to have you help us. Thank you
Also have a 1974 era top eliminator that has many surface gouges, and the front grill has one head light out of two on the left side that is almost disappeared. The back bumper is also worn. Any recommendations on fixing up the body besides electro plating and maybe using several primer coats? The interior is black plastic with only one seat, and there is no windshield. Got any parts that would help restore this? The base is plastic chrome, dated 1974, and I would like to replace with a metal base.
@Joe canon: I would guess a hobbyist supply store or website, and ask for or do a search for repo parts. BTW, excellent video. Question for Sergio and Dad: For surefire accuracy on scoring, would it be a good idea to score the rivet with an automatic center punch, made by U.S. tools, available at any decent ACE Hdwe store? However set the impact of the punch at the absolute MINIMUM amount, so as to not distort or compress the post! I have found that scoring with the drill itself lends itself to lateral "skating" and drilling the hole off center.
I think they aught to just start putting small eyeglass type screws into diecast, Makes modding easier and there are a few makers that do this (Matchbox,HotWheels,Siku, etc.,you guys take note and learn) It's not that costly and really helps for older collectors that want to change things on the model to make them more accurate or who wish to customize the models.
sorry I have no idea..I just filmed & edited the video..from what I remember that machine wasn't loud...maybe put a rubber mat on the bottom to soften the vibration? good luck..
Do you ever detail your models? I like to make mine life like by adding head, tail, backup, etc. lights. Sadly though not all vehicles have cast on lights where they should be so this can be difficult.
Hi, love the video, thanks for sharing! I do have a question about the painted "black roof" Redlines. I come across cars such as Custom Camaro's, Eldorado's, etc. which are in great shape except many happen to have scratched or rubbed off areas to the black roofs. I can't find anyone with a video in reference to touching up those roofs. Can you suggest a simple Technic, the best paint match to original, etc. I'd appreciate any help, thanks!
Crazy glue on the rivet? When I was customizing these Hot Wheels back in the 80s and 90s I was doing everything pretty much the same way as you. I didn't have a sand blaster or tumbler. And at 10 years old..... no money. I used paint stripper, wire wheels, and sending to strip them. And, I would glue the chassis to the body with Elmer's glue or wood glue because my parents were carpenters. White glue allowed me to split the cars and repaint them when if I felt like it or sometimes I'd put the bodies onto other toys. Is your website still up?
baremetalHW makes the cars look MUCH better and preserves the original detail. You didn't re paint the grille or the tail lights, and the overall look of the paint looked like it was caked on. That's why it should be done in layers, not sprayed on all at once.
where would you get the original hot wheels paint charts or matchbox paint charts or paint to get the cars looking authentic like it has just rolled out of the factory
Yes, I like that method because sandblasting gets in all the details. You can also use rustoleum paint stripper spray which is easier to use than what was shown in the video.
+Keith M I just sandblasted several bodies a few weeks ago. They came out great, no little spots of paint left like when I used paint stripper the first time I restored some die-cast cars. Even using an x-acto knife proved to be quite tricky when trying to get into the small details.
Nice 'manuaal' but a bit long! I made a movie of my neighbour, who has the same hobby. I followed him when he bought a Chevrolet Corvair on Marktplaats, a kind of Dutch Ebay. Then I filmed the entire restauration proces, interviewed him later, and added interview and music (from the Corvair period) to the movie. I had 17 Dinky Toys, but the were stolen....
Do you sell your parts on eBay? I purchase a lot of repro parts for my die cast hobby and I have a feeling that I've purchased from you. And oh, you do fabulous work! I'm pretty sure that I've mentioned that before, but I figured I'd tell you again.
Hit the glass with some Novus plastic polish, and rawdog268 is not too bright...I sold a custom Batmobile I made from a non batmobile HW car few years ago on ebay for $200.00+
My father owned a body shop and every summer I used to help him working on real cars. What a joy that was felt so great to work hard I felt like I was taking care of my brothers at that young age.Now I am painting Dinky and Corgi cars with my son

Cool dad. You're lucky having a guy like that as your dad. Mine couldn't care less about teaching me these great skills!
Ah, but be sure to teach this to your kids, man
My dad was the same.
Mark Bartlett on behalf of all fathers, i am sorry! This mesg caught my attention and i'm sorry to hear that. Cool mom !
Thanks Eric. All the best for you and your family.

very educational and good work. its good to see this young boy is taking interest in it instead sitting on video games. keep it up excellent job
I honestly never knew people were into doing this, I just stumbled onto this by accident. Thanks!
glad you like it Michael..thanks for watching
I think I missed something. What did you guys do, if anything to the interior and windshield? Or did you just swap them for your repros?
Sorry Im not sure.I filmed & edited the video.

Hello
Congratulations for your video, it was very instructive
I would like to know what kind and size of rivet you used?
great vid, is it possible to put too much paint on or how do u tell when enough is enough?

Neat video - father son project is great - why no eye protection when painting?
Thank you so much for sharing the process in detail.
where would one purchase, the rivits used, i cant find any local in my areas, thanks love the video, im hooked lol
You don't put it back together with rivets, you normally can use 2-56 screws.
thank you sir, i will be looking for some, small town may get lucky lol
If you look on ebay Joe, type in corgi spares you should find them there, they are glued into place
Hello... to paint templates or stripes in my matchbox car, can i use oil painting and if not what paint would you recommend me .. thanks
paps ..did you how to make a windshield made of resin ? i have some cars with very spoiled windshield ! :)
where would you get the original hot wheels paint charts or matchbox paint charts or paint to get the cars looking authentic like it has just rolled out of the factory
Great video!!
.
Great hobby for father and son bonding .
.
I suggest to use an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner to clean the small airbrush parts.
more videos on taking appart matchbox how to etc and tool list would be great :)
you made a mess with the rear rivet, aside from that its pretty darn amazing =)
wonderful, have have a century of cars collection 1 to 90 mint condition what's the value on them take care, and enjoy
Try spraying the model using clear varnish as a undercoat before painting
Great tips thanks very much just starting out will subscribe to your channell
Would it be possible to just sandblast the paint off the car? In turn I think it would a bit easier however, I don't want to damage the car itself.
Mark Martino Im sorry I have no idea..I just made the video.
Yes, I like that method because sandblasting gets in all the details. You can also use rustoleum paint stripper spray which is easier to use than what was shown in the video.
Just don't sand too much off, or you could dull the details and make the body weaker.
+Keith M I just sandblasted several bodies a few weeks ago. They came out great, no little spots of paint left like when I used paint stripper the first time I restored some die-cast cars. Even using an x-acto knife proved to be quite tricky when trying to get into the small details.
