Strangely, I saw the trailer in the Cinema and thought Shakespeare was played by Ben Kingsley! Look at him!

The "pretty thoughts" speech is an absolute masterpiece.
I agree with everything Mark Kermode said about this film. It is a quite moving and intriguing insight into the latter years of probably the greatest Englishman of all time. I remember the comment of Alan Davies when he was extolling the virtues of John Lennon to be called "the greatest Briton in History" in the T.V. programme of that name twenty years ago. He said "I am here representing John Lennon as the candidate for the title but obviously the winner should be Shakespeare!!" This unheralded film supports that statement and does the Bard justice.
Mark Kermode always seems to have something interesting to say regardless of the film being reviewed. PS: Just watched the trailer as well. The low key approach is impressive and the opposite of the Hollywoodisation of the Mary Queen of Scots trailer, which deterred me from going to see that last week.
Just watched it and I liked it. It's a nice film about the end of his life and about his family life.
This film makes an interesting companion piece with Peter Greenaway's `The Draughtsman's Contract`: both films are set mostly in a 17th century English country house and garden, they have a key plot thread about property law (specifically the issue of women inheriting property), the male lead is completely oblivious to a conspiracy hatched by the female leads, and there's a debate about how an artist can represent something they don't actually know about. `All Is True` has some very on-the-nose dialogue at times, but it's a beautiful, gentle little film and it won me over by the end.
I really wanted to see this but not being shown in a single cinema in my town (Swindon) sadly.

Swindon didn't show Hamlet either. Bit of a fuss about at the time. In Swindon. No one gave a toss elsewhere.
I can't really solve all the issues of those living in Swindon, but you CAN go and see the film, just been to see it at Empire, there were about 10 people in the cinema, not sure it'll be around for long…..

Looks interesting. After watching the trailer I'm not sure why Judy Dench is attempting a west country accent though.

Much as I admire Judi Dench I have to agree with you. The accent spoken in Warwickshire would be closer to a Birmingham accent although one can’t be entirely sure how sixteenth / seventeenth century people would talk.
The music/break was distracting, a 7min uninterrupted slot would be preferred if thats not too much trouble.
I'm a big Shakespeare fan- actual plays and bio stuff (Shakespeare in Love etc)- this is an AWFUL film.
Totally fictional story- Shakespeare's 11yo son drowns himself for guilt over not writing a poem. The worst dialogue I've ever seen. I hated this film- it's utter, utter rubbish. Trash trash trash. Watch it and see for yourself
Clearly you being a fan and fanatic obstructed by the possibilty to see the beauty and the art. It's the same as stating Van Gogh is a rubbish painter because he transponded the landscape to make it his, which in itself is his greatest quality. It's not about factual truth in art, it's about the artists truth and capability to feel and share that quality which is transpersonal. If you want to follow truth, stick to science. Let me tell you this - you'll have to adapt to the changing nature of truth there too. Good luck ridding your bias. SMH

I agree about the miscasting
This looks like the worst film in history. I’ve seen it trailered before eight movies and I’ve hated it more every single time.
This was in every way a beautiful movie. Just take the photography and music. I also found it quite moving,

The writing is incredible. Amazing film. But it's a niche story for Shakespeare fans who already know something about his life. Falls flat for Mainstream audiences who know nothing going in. The resonance and fan service in scenes where Shakespeare meets the Earl of Southhampton and discuss Sonnet 29 are lost on people who aren't aware of the history.
An extremely violent film, I found.
